mousquerader, you're right, not taking Zinc on a full stomach causes you to be seriously nauseous and feel as if you want to vomit. I've taken Zinc on a full stomach and sometimes I still feel like that. Make sure that you take Zinc with a FULL tall glass of water. This will help.

Sara- Even if you do not get physically burned, I think it's best to stay out of tanning beds. I read your post and I wanted to ask: How long did you stick with the dietary + vitamin regime? I'm a firm believer that diet does play a role on your skin, however, I completely understand your frustration. I used to be health nut vegan for quite some time and could not fathom why my skin was not flawless when I was eating only the best foods. So again, even if it takes time, you need to eliminate the root cause of the problem. You said that your acne is coming back...what have you changed during then and now? Maybe you can take a blood test to see which foods you are sensitive/allergic to. For the antibiotic, did you know that garlic is a natural antibiotic? You can ingest raw finely chopped garlic for immense health benefits. (Make sure on a full stomach)

I did it for at least 2 months and still don't eat certain things (only soy milk, and hardly ever cheese or eggs, no chocolate, water all the time...etc). I really don't think it's a dietary thing.

I also use zinc oxide cream. It helped a lot at first but now I feel like I've become immune to it already. It does still help with redness.

I also took some zinc tablets and the nausea was a big problem for me. The antibiotics I'm taking right now (minocycline) are also causing pretty bad nausea for me.:(

I have to say my skin isn't that bad right now. Right cheek and forehead are clear, but on my left cheek, on my jawline and near my mouth I have about 5 pimples but they're all red and very painful and just won't go away...
If I can get those to vanish before the wedding I need to go to I'll be very happy...I have a week so I'm hoping for the best....

Funny zinc made you guys feel nauseous for I've been taking it for quite a while now and haven't felt so once, even though I sometimes take it on an empty stomach.

^ i actually always drink my zinc in the morning (on empty stomach) and i've never felt nauseous? but well...

you drink it? I always took tablets... Maybe I should try to find it in liquid form, maybe it's easier on the stomach that way...

I'm not taking oxytetracycline any more and so now can take zinc supplements - it said that zinc along with other things reduced the effectiveness of the oxytetracycline.

my zinc isn't in liquid form! i take the supplements in form of fizzy tablets you put in a glass of water ... i should've explained it a little bit better

Crying Diamonds, do you exfoliate after washing your face for the flaky skin? I suffered from this as well. I also have extremely dry and sensitive skin so I would pile on the moisturizer on my face thinking too much of it could never be bad, but this actually counteracted and made my skin even more drying, since it relied on the product to moisturize my skin, not my natural oils. So I only apply necessary moisturizer and I have upped my water consumption. Although others might say otherwise, hydrating my body did hydrate and had an effect on the dryness of my skin. Try using an oil free moisturizer for the shine. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Quinn. I shall search for an oil free moisturiser.

Any suggestions anybody?

For those taking zinc without stomach upsets even on an empty stomach, how much elemental mg of zinc are you taking? I'm currently taking 15mg, mostly twice a day.

Just a quick question, (for those of you that have been to a dermatologist)
Is a dermatologist able to tell you what is exactly wrong with your skin and how you should treat your problem?

well...This is my opinion (I've been going to a derm for 6 years now): when it comes to acne dermatologists are still guessing as to what causes it... They really don't know, with some people it's hormonal (this becomes clear when a girls skin gets better after she starts taking the pill) but if it's not that they don't really know what is causing it.

A dermatologist will usually give topical creams and maybe antibiotics if acne is bad enough. But I feel that they are basically just trying things out...acne is a tricky thing and for some people one product works right away and for others they can try everything but their acne is just too stubborn...
If one thing doesn't work the dr will try something else though....and if you're lucky it'll work well.
I think it's definitely a good idea to visit a dermatologist if your acne is persistent, but don't expect any miracle creams right away...

I don't know for sure because I threw away the packaging, but I believe it's 5mg.

Does anyone have experience with homeopathy for acne?

in the fizzy-tablets i take there are 5mg/tablet. maybe that's the reason why i've never felt the nausea... anyway the woman at my pharmacy told me not to exceed the daily requirement, because it can cause serious troubles to your body

It is recommended not to exceed 100mg of zinc daily, moreover, if taken for acne, it's best to stay under 50 mg.

Sara, the dermatological philosophy to acne is very archaic. In the US, they still teach that diet has no correlation to acne. However, something internal is causing acne, (hormonal imbalance) and this can be fixed with diet/vitamins etc. Everyone's dietary deficiencies vary, so this poses difficulties in pinpointing what needs to be fixed. For me, as a vegan, I wasn't getting much zinc and so introducing zinc balanced out my system.

At any rate, acne prone skin is not very tolerate to cream based products. It's too heavy and has too much oil. Also, Accutane is an extremely harsh and potent form of Vitamin A so, those of you might want to look into taking Vitamin A supplements.

has any1 tried zineryt (or whatever it's called) it contains erythromycin and zinc acetate, i've only been using it for a couple of weeks combined with my current clinque anti-blemish skincare routine, and i've definately noticed an improvement

That's what I've been on for the past 4 weeks,my skin has improved no end,but I had to stop using it yesterday cos it went out of date and I now have to go on 3 months of antibiotics. I might ask to go back on Zineryt though cos its a life saver! Did you ever have the unfortune of tasting it? URGH lol
