The Acne Thread

I'm not sure about how correct I am but I definitely remember reading about acne sometimes being hormonal. I do recommend fish oil though, I've never tried it but will be buying it next week. 90% of the reviews of fish oil say it works, so I'm gonna try it.

Actually, acne/spots on the cheek area are food issues/allergies and stuff, because it comes right from your liver. ..What is more, your chin is influenced by hormones, definitely not cheeks. That is why women USUALLY get spots before menstruation on chin and nearby areas.

But this is what I was taught by people who help me go through my severe allergies - and in my case it is true. My liver is damaged thanks to chemicals in food products and when I eat something bad I immediately get acne on my cheeks...

^ This is what I know to be true, too.

Jawline as well (as chin), hormonal.
As far as liver/toxicity problems, this is a consideration too for anyone who's considering accutane R/x. It is definitely not 100% effective for 100% of the people; I was on it for 2 full courses, years apart...I'm still struggling.
And if you go the antibiotic route, it will result in some clearing but that also presupposes that whatever's causing the acne is going to be cured by the antibiotic, vs. just temporarily squelched (hormonal, food or product causes).

Food sensitivities & digestion is big too.

I'm on long term antibiotics for my skin, it seems to be clearing up but it takes at least six weeks to start so it's no quick fix.

As for accutane, I personally would never recommend it. The side effects are common and very, very severe. For girls, it can cause severe, life threatening birth defects when you come to being pregnant and I think you have to also go on specific birth control pills while on accutane. But it can also cause severe depression, to the point of suicide and self-harm. I've never needed to go on it as my skin has been reasonably okay, but my brother did and although his skin looked great, we nearly lost him! The medicine combined with quite an intensive lifestyle (he's a 5th year medical student) caused very bad depression, to the point where my mother had to move up to his flat and stay for weekends. I know that side effects do not affect everyone and I know people who are on the drug but have only had side effects of anxiousness and cracked skin/lips, but it's just a warning if you are prone to low spells or your family is.

ALSO I'm on the pill, which has helped my skin dramatically during my younger teenage years. One called 'Dianette' worked amazingly, but unfortunately gave me headaches. Another called 'cilest' worked well for skin too, but again, headaches! I think the changing of these pills is what has caused my skin to flare up, but the antibiotic route definitely helps!

Let us know how it works and fingers crossed :flower:

I am extremely anxious to read new stuff about acne treatment and all kinds of things influencing your skin condition, so it's always good to know something new.

My dermathologists is on vacation until next week, so i started using differin 0,1 yesterday, since it's regular Acne i think it might act fast (or at least i hope so :innocent:), i'll go to see him anyway. The thing is, that i'm desperate cause university starts in 3 more weeks, and i don't want to come back like this

I think it's really interesting the theory of hormonal and food, in my case it use to appear acne after i ate chocolate, of course now i'm not eating it, and usually after i shave. Anyway i onl y have around my jawline and a little bit in my forehead, which i have never had.
I would to know what food you shouldn't eat.
anyway let's see what happens :(

When it comes to food you are not supposed to eat - there are tests you can run on your blood and they actually unravel certain products you are forbidden to eat if you want to be healthy. There are clinics all over the world which pride themselves in having these tests.

Personally, I trust the pendulum test, which is not as sophisticated as lab tests, but serves its purpose better. My mum runs the pendulum test for me and basically you put (for instance) chocolate on a white sheet of paper in front of you and someone (who does not touch you at the very moment) takes the pendulum and it starts moving - if it moves in your direction as 'nodding' - it means it is healthy for you. If it starts moving from left to right as 'no' - it means it is not good. We were taught this technique by an old Mongolian lama, as my mum is deeply engaged in buddhism.

I know it sounds unbelievable but for me it works. I was told that I can't eat any cheese, but after the pendulum test - It turned out that I can eat gruyere cheese from Switzerland.

In my opinion everything what works is worth trying, especially in the case of women's acne.

OMG  I'm so gonna try this test, i have nothing to loose and it looks easy doing, although it seems pendulums are being used for a lot of tests... Anyway, if you say it serves for the purpose then i'll do it, i trust buddhist stuff. ^_^

You know, it does not do any harm, so why not try it ;) Read first about the pendulum, 'cause there are some stuff to digest before ;) Fingers crossed! ;)

I've been using iodine solution for over a month and I have to say my skin is much smoother, and I have less acnes, than before. The solution basically disinfects your skin.I use betadine, I'm not sure if it's a worldwide known product. Here's a picture of the bottle:

Hi all, I am new to this forum but I thought I might join in. Well, I have bad hormonal breakouts where I'd get clusters of breakouts along my chin and jaws. I find regular exfoliation with enzyme and steam keeps the breakouts to minimal. I also love Borghese fango mud which seems to refine the skin. Currently I am using a salicyclic acid toner and Cosmedix Define at night. And aloe vera gel (from my own pot) or Kinerase Peptide C3 treatment (I think that's the name) helps. I find Citrix SPF30 to be non-comedogenic and best out of all sunscreens. I find most sunscreens do break me out and I can't be bothered forever mud masking myself everyday just to keep the breakouts to minimum. I also find regular exercise and eating low GI diet helps with the skin breakouts. I read this is to do with regulating insulin which in turn helps the endocrine system to regulate hormones.
I am looking for a good salicyclic acid toner that isn't harsh and am having difficulty finding one that doesn't have denatured alcohol of some sort. Any recs? Thanks.

Two years ago I started to break out horribly. My dermathologists prescribed
Duac Akne Gel 1% Clindamycin, 5% Benzoylperoxid and Linoladiol N with Erythromycin - I was cured very soon and my skin looks quite perfect.

I've suffered with a shiny complection for many years, as well as breakouts. I've honestly tried everything, so when i ran out of my dermaquest face wash, which did kinda work btw, i used the dove soap in my bathroom until my order for dermaquest came, i noticed that my skin was a lot softer and smoother. I then decided to cancel my order and continue to use dove soap, it made sense with dove being a MILLION times cheaper than dermaquest, which was costing me close to £250 for their range. So anyway, when i got a breakout, i then thought about using a product that has similar ingredients as dermaquest. The main ingredient being salicylic acid, so i bought some clearasil ultra rapid action pads. This combined with the dove soap have worked wonders for me and saving me big time, money wise. I use Biotherm pore reducer. This is a very light moisturiser and really does keep the shine at bay. I hope this helps someone that suffers with the same skin as i have. :)

Okay I don't have acne but I have skin problems. My arms and legs have bumps on them. So more specifically there are bumps on the back of my calves and my thighs. I had them for several years and i wish they could just go away. And by bumps i don;t mean huge ones just um small ones. I don't really know what it is. Help?

Just wanted to post my similar success with Clindamycin - I use it in the morning, and at night use a prescription Retin-A (Tretinoin). I only use it on my chin/jawline where I was suffering bad stress/hormonal breakouts that were driving me mad. I had tried to fix the issue with more "natural" solutions for months without much success. Still trying to address the underlying issue with lots of vitamins, veggies, sleep, no sugar/white carbs etc., but this combination has really kept the breakouts at bay.

I have these little spots and blemishes and I wanted to know which kind of concealers do you think are the very best? I have very pale and sensitive skin and now I use Touche Eclat from time to time to hide my little spots. I know it is not a concealer, but sometimes it does the job but now I want a real concealer :) Any suggestions? :flower:

this sounds like Retinoic Acid, which's what my doctor's prescribed me and works heaps fine.
I had pimples all over my face, especially cheeks and the t-zone and i didn't know it was acne, cos i never really had that problem.. I eat well, avoid dairy (i love cheese though) and all i put on my face and probs almost everything i eat is organic, so i was not to keen on putting some chemical on my skin, and retinoic acid is actually an oxidized form of vitamin a, and it has anti-wrinkle effects since it boosts collagen production and it provides a natural exfoliation of the skin, AND it got rid of my few freckles. so now i absolutely love it. but of course you have to buy a really great cleansing bar too clean your face first thing in the morning so the acid won't burn your skin.
This is what I'd recommend:
