The Acne Thread

Warning: no one use baking soda as an exfoliator. It caused me little zits that are taking forever to go away :( It completely dried my skin and made it red and irritated. I know everyone is different, but no one with acne or acne-prone skin should ever use something this harsh. I should've known not to use something that whitens teeth and cleans counters on my face.

Just a word of caution.

I'm trying the spearmint tea thing mentioned a few pages back. It's not been doing much for my acne, but my skin has become much less oily, which is awesome. I've only been drinking 2 cups a day for 2 weeks, so Ill continue drinking and see how it goes....

^ That's what I've been doing; for a month or so now. It definitely helps with oiliness, but it gets hard to keep up with it after a while...I struggle now...it's not too convenient to have to drink hot tea several times a day...but I'm sticking with it. Also, I found it's not as effective if you drink the cups toward the end of the day--you have to drink at least one in the morning in order to keep oiliness down during the day.

Yeah, metabolism is highest during morning! Your body gets the most nutriment out of things you eat during these times.

Huh, really? That's interesting. I drink most of my cups in the afternoon...
But you;'e right, it gets to be such a hassle to drink 2 cups everyday, though I'm adapting to the taste. I've got a cup of it right next to me as I'm typing! lol.

Yeah, plus if you don't drink at least one cup in the AM, what's blocking the androgens until you do drink it? Nothing, therefore your skin is still producing too much oil. When you drink it in the morning, then it's working to block those hormones until your next cup :) I think it's kind of useless if it's ingested at night, since you wash/rinse off any oil in the morning anyway.

Also, just a tip, I bought a coffee thermal and now only brew/drink my tea using that, with a straw, so that I don't stain my teeth! I had noticed they weren't as white even just a couple weeks into drinking without a straw several times a day.

I ran out of spearmint tea, I need to get more. I had a err...big weekend a few weeks ago and my skin is still suffering, and I mean SUFFERING. it hurts and they are the biggest spots I have ever had. Actually I'm scared to even go out over bank holiday!

^I've been teetotal for a fair while now,and I didn't drink for 18 months for the age of 18,and my skin was and still is awful so I say enjoy yourself ;)

yeah but not many of them have good skin up close.. but then they also have money for great skin care and facials.. But you can tell the difference between a smoker and non smoker

if you already have acne which is alot of the people that come in this thread then smoking will not help your skin at all

I don't think smoking necessarily causes acne blemishes, maybe in some people, but it certainly changes your skin's texture overtime and causes wrinkles.

ok so here's my problem.

usually if i break out i just follow my normal routine and they go away after 3 or 4 days.

but i have a really huge pimple on my nose and its been there for almost 2 weeks. its not like normal ones, its like under the skin. the first few days it was a light bump, then it became big and red but after a few days it went away. and now for the past week its just like a bump on my nose and there hasnt been any difference.

is there anything i should be doing or im doing wrong?

i don't know, its funny, i smoke but people comment me on my skin, I'm sixteen and i've never had a pimple, i drink a lot of tea ( not just green, all sorts ) and i do sauna sessions five times a week to get toxins out of my body, when you exercise and sweat out a lot of toxins it could prevent acne from happening. I exfoliate daily ( DO NOT exfoliate with acne, i've seen girls who have used st. ives on their acne and they just scar like mad ) peels are really good as well.

I had a friend who had a few pimples, not a whole lot but she did have them and she used clinique toner level four which i think is the highest even though she didn't need it, she rarely ever gets them now.

and as for drinking, thats funny too, when i had my filling of vodka and woke up the next morning i woke up glowing, like nicole kidman glowing, haha, i was so happy i contemplated turning into an alcoholic, my skin really did never look better then during a hang over x]

and you need to look on your moisturizers and make sure they say " cosmetologist tested " before you buy moisturizers google them and look at the reviews, sephora is good for looking at reviews because next to the persons screen name it says their skin type so you can relate to some of the girls on there.

you should really invest in the zeno or one of those acne instruments, as soon as you feel one coming on you should zap it, and then apply a damp heated cloth to it, anything to kill the bacteria, those just suck.

Just an update if anyone cares... I've been taking vitex for exactly a month now, and wow, I think it actually worked. I used to get my periods very irregularly, like every 2 or 3 months, but it actually came a month later, when it should! This is very exciting to me. I'm going to keep up with this, and hopefully next month my period will come again at the same time. That would just confirm it really regularized my cycles. As far as breakouts go, I did get some earlier this week, but I think that was just due to me being careless and not rinsing my face immediately after running the track and from not properly removing the Shiseido sunscreen I wore on Sunday... or it could just be that I'm only getting breakouts around that-time-of-the-month now. I just have like 4-5 noninflamed, under-the-ground pimples on my chin/jawline, but they don't seem like the stubborn, persistent types that would take forever to go away like I used to get.

One more thing! Last week I started regularly taking a vitamin C supplement that includes rose hips and acerola, so I think that's been helping my skin, too. My skin looks SO good today.
