Rumor: MTV Has Canceled The City
By Lauren Sherman

Rumor has it that MTV has canceled (seemingly) successful scripted reality series The City. The current season, which airs on Tuesdays at 10.30pm EST, will be its last.

The City, a spin-off of the The Hills, which was a spin-off of Laguna Beach, documents the “life” of Whitney Port, a young designer trying to make it in New York. It mostly takes place at real-life fashion industry companies, including Kelly Cutrone’s public relations firm People’s Revolution and Elle magazine, where main characters Erin Kaplan and Olivia Palermo “work.” (Kaplan does indeed work full time at Elle, Palermo does not.)

In general, we’re a bit surprised by this news.

The City seems genuinely popular, and even if it doesn’t pull in ratings equivalent to those of The Hills (which is also ending this season), it’s much buzzier. For a brand like MTV, it seems like it’d be worth sacrificing some ratings for press.

But we guess that’s not the case in this circumstance. We’re also guessing that, Palermo, who has become a celebrity outside of her work on The City, is “over” the show, as is Whitney Port, who is very serious about her fashion career, even if the rest of the world isn’t.

^ Oh....I'm sorry to hear that... Rats.... :cry:All right- it's not a great show but it's fun and the people seem like people we know now- or at least coworkers- I will miss it...

I would be shocked if MTV indeed cancelled the show. Its getting 1.6-1.75 millions viewers not counting web count, reruns, etc... it is pretty cheap to produce. Whitney makes the most at 20,000/episodes and Olivia 12,000/epi. Plus, Adam Divello (creator and producer) recently said in an interview that he and MTV had big plans for the 3rd season of The City. Of course, MTV could have easily changed its mind... but lets hope not.

The City Might Not Return for Another Season

Rumor has it that MTV has canceled The City, Fashionista reports, and that the current second season will be the show's last. However, a source close to the show tells us that a decision about renewing the show hasn't been made but that it's not likely it will return for a third season. MTV has been focusing on scripted shows and supposedly wants to see how the ratings for the rest of the season turn out before deciding The City's fate. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense, because The City IS scripted. And if MTV kills it, how will Elle stay on TV? How will Olivia — and Whitney and Roxy — stay famous? Kelly Cutrone will be totally fine and famous no matter what, but we like seeing her motherly mentoring side on the show, which doesn't quite shine through in the same way on Kell on Earth when her entire intern staff is annoying her, rather than just Roxy.

^ Did anyone catch Kelly's short example for Whitney of how the buyers would act when they showed up? Brilliant!! And Whitney acted somewhere between terrified and not understanding any of it...

^^ Have you got this in aubergine?? My shoppers love aubergine... oh this blouse is great but have u got it in champagne? Made me LOL
Such a shame to see its been cancelled, but I've only been watching for Olivia since about episode 2 of season 1  Whitney just bores me to tears!!!

That was very funny. Kelly is so honest, she is a realist.

Lets all hope that MTV give Olivia her own show, wouldnt that be fabulous?

^ I hope there are back- I look forward to the show- it is one of only a few that I pay attention to.... ;)

Kelly twitted that she would wear pink for a week if the rumors are true

Oh MTV probably started those rumors themselves in order to drum some extra publicity for this season last 3 epi...

^ I know it sounds cynical, but when I first heard the rumors I thought maybe they were throwing it out there to see what sort of outrage it would generate, much like the near riots in the streets last year when CW mentioned Gossip Girl might go away...Of course, that would have called for an air strike on their headquarters, but...:argg: I hope The City returns!! And Kelly's show? What of that??

Kelly's show was so great, if The City was Olivia/Erin and Kelly instead of Whitney/Roxy it would be perfection.

omg sosososo much second that :flower:
i don't like whitney port ahahhaha is it too ridiculous? i love the show

- Shut up Whitney. How unfair to Roxy. Lights was not having it. She obviously hated your clothes. She couldn't wait to take the jacket off. And telling Roxy she has to answer to Kelly. Please. Grow up Whitney. This is your line, you can't go running to mommy Kelly every time you have a problem.

- Why is Joe constantly kissing Olivia's butt? Give Erin a little more praise please. He kept going on and on about what a wonderful job Olivia did. But gave a one second praise to Erin. It as been three years.
