Designers Shoulder On For Spring

December 11, 2008 11:15 am

Skin is in for Spring, but in unexpected, subtle ways. At Balenciaga, dresses were paired with Lurex gloves and shoe-covering tights; only a lone collarbone was left exposed. Meanwhile, the asymmetric evening gowns that have ruled the red carpet for seasons have been replaced by long columns with billowy chiffon sleeves cut to reveal just a flash of the upper arms. Do modest times call for modest dresses? Preen’s Justin Thornton thinks so. “I love how a shoulder can be sexy,” he said. “These outfits have a ‘look but don’t touch’ attitude.”

Think of it as the anti-shoulder pad.

lol i was wondering what you meant.

i think the revealed shoulder had a different effect on every collection it was used it. for some it was a sexiness, for others it was more of a calm and relaxed look.

i always liked bare shoulder(s). i think it is very subtle way of sexiness without looking too tried.

i think that the bare shoulders shown in the Prada show or givenchy (and others) are also a nice, different way of showing the shoulder. i got tired from the loose, oversized and shoulder exposing tops.

The bare shoulder is a romantic and attractive style. An aspect of my most hated decade of all-time (guess which one?) was the off-shoulder top. A lot of the garments expressed are pretty lovely. So any femme looking to try out this look have a good deal of choices to look lovely sporting this style.

in some ways it's like an extension of basic body-con bandage dresses, but then it works so well in the likes of Dries van Noten and Prada as well. I like that it adds a focal point to a look

I personally love this because I find the collarbone/shoulder area to be one of the most beautiful parts on a woman's body.

The Prada and Balenciaga are definitely my favorite takes on this, particularly that gold Prada dress.

^_^i absolutely sign this! Although it depends also on the shape of the collarbones. i love it when they are totally straight (some have them shaped more like a V...

anyway, def. something to look forward

^I think the shape of collarbones depends on your posture, i've never seen anybody with collarbones aiming downwards.

i like Stella McCartney and Prada's pieces the most, I think the off shoulder thing is a tasteful way to show skin.

I noticed this trend coming in during the New York and London shows.

i love a bare shoulder in the summer, so sexy without being overtly so. i generally can't jive with the "cold shoulder" look a la vintage donna karan, but that aquascutum tunic posted above is amazing... i could wear that all summer...

great thread!!

cheap monday has an open shoulder hoodie thats pretty cool...

Loove this alot, especially how Givenchy did it. Focal point is a nice word for it, but not in too much of a "look at me" way.. you know?

Hmm how do I post images in a reply? Sorry I'm only new to the forums here but I know that bare/cut-off shoulders were all over the Kenzo by Antonio Marras show this season and I don't know how to post the pics? There's pics on elle.com but they are not high def enough and then the ones on the kenzo press site are way too high def I think lol

I love showing the shoulders. I find it really relaxed and sexy at the same time.

More like the warm shoulder here... I saw some woman on a warm day here today wear this cutoff sweater or top with a little shoulder detail. Given a great outfit, this trend will likely catch on for warm days here in the Houston area. This will likely be a fun trend for Spring and Summer.
