The End Of Sex?

^ Yes, but what is sexy or sl*tty is in the eye of the beholder...

A former colleague in a previous line of work was saying something like he really liked how his wife wasn't afraid of dressing like a "real" woman, to fix her hair and wear make-up in a classy way. You know, sexy.

I was expecting an elegant creature when I met her, but she basically looked like a prostitute with a serious weight problem... :ninja:

Oh no, I'm embarassed just to hear that! :o :P
Actually, though, it's very sweet that her husband finds her sexy.

People in Tokyo haven't been dressing "sexy" since the early nineties...not that they've ever shown a lot of skin, but there's nary a glamour-puss in town nowadays; the frumpy/natural/naive/quirky style has become the given since quite a few years. Always one to be wary of the norm I've almost started to feel like skintight logomania is the new avant-garde...I'm overcome with a strange feeling of awe when I behold such a person :P

The 70s were all about sensuality.
The 80s were all about over-doing it.
The 90s were all about minimalism.

I feel as if Fashion is currently building something up again - a very pulled-together style, like a re-invention of clothes. In a few years it will be interesting to take off all that is hidden now.

We need to re-discover an interest in "showing it" again after we have hidden it, as we do now.

Sometimes I think sl*tty can be sexy. But it's not something I necessarily condone or would attempt myself. It's just kind of an 'every-now-and-then' refreshment.

This is what I'm thinking of. But I guess you need the right body and can avoid wearing cheap nylon nails.

I think 2000 - 2009, particularly 2004 - 2009, is going to be seen as all about experimentation.

From 1983-1987, commercials used cheesey elements to sell things.
From 1988-1994, commercials used logos and catch phrases, and repetition to sell things.
From 1995-2004, commercials used negative imagery (like something bad happening to someone, because we remember negative things more than positive things) to sell things.
Over the past year and a half, commercials are starting to use strangeness, weirdness, original-ness (yes, I know it's not a word), and doing things that can entertain people with very short attention spans to sell things.

The music industry has been caught in limbo since the mid 90's--and since 2003 people are starting to get antsy for something new sounding, and some artists with a slightly different sound have started to come out into the mainstream, especially this year.

Automobile designs, electronics designs, they all seemed to be stuck the same way the music industry was stuck, and in 2003, those designs started to change--actually it really started as early as 2001, but it didn't start becoming common until 2003.

The clothing industry seemed to be stuck in limbo between 1998 and 2003, just starting to break free of it in 2004.

This is why I think fashion is going to come into a very creative period--very original, very unusual, very "sci-fi", very comic-book/graphic-novel. We're going to see some really weird stuff come out into the mainstream.

This is all, of course, just my opinion based on observations.

If the 1910-1919 were called the teens, 1920-1929 the 20's, then the 30's and etc..., what was the period called between 1900 and 1909? The zeros? What is the period going to be called between 2000 - 2009?

That has always bugged the hell out of me. I want to know. :ninja:

I actually love the non-sexy styles of these seasons. I've never been into slinky ever, whether tasteful or trashy. Just doesn't suit me, but I love it on other people. I feel i can still add my own sexy element, like wearing a voluminous dress but make it a short one, or wear a puffy shirt but have it low cut v-neck with empire line. I know men probably hate these looks but I absolutely adore them.

very interesting points everyone. i think the paris hilton generation has made us embarassed of sexuality and of our bodies, so we're hiding them away. overt sexuality is becoming less popular and i'm glad of it, moral depravity is "out".

Sexy is a state of the mind.

not nescessarily-

many women dress to impress- or prove thier social standing with other women-

they wear things that men might find odd, or off putting, or pretentious, but which make other women admire, or make them jealous

Sexy will never go out of style. I just think that there are different types of sexiness and different ways to be sexy. Some demure, ladylike styles can look just as sexy as a strappy Versace evening gown. It just depends on the attitude you give off while wearing it. To me class=sexiness. I would much rather see someone wearing a nice, form-fitting knee length dress than some trashy dress that they are just hanging out of.

When p*rn actress Jenna Jameson was on tour to promote her best-selling 2004 memoir, ''How to Make Love Like a p*rn Star," Pamela Paul notes, ''12- and 13-year-old girls went up to her and told her she was their role model."
THE BOSTON GLOBE (January 24, 2006)

Something tells me that the trend of girls dressing overly sexy isn't going anywhere fast.....:(

Everyone likes sex, so sex in fashion will never disappear. The market for this type of clothing may shrink and swell over time but it will always be there.

good points scandibabian. but the more i think about it, the more i think this isn't about sex "going away" at all, just look at the word "demure" that's being bandied about so much recently. it still hints at sexuality, but it's attaching connotations of mystique and subdued sensuality in the place of t*ts'n'***. perhaps sex is becoming mature again, a stand against the sexualisation of younger and younger children in western society? i think the base instinct of this movement is reclaiming sex from the depraved and perverse.

^^I totally agree with you, and can see this completely within the higher end fashion part of the apparel industry. Western society will continue to struggle with this in youth culture, however, because of the lack of open, frank dialogue about sex. Youth turn to media to tell them how to conduct themselves sexually, because it is a "sin" for them to have very natural sexual feelings at a young age.

With overt sexuality being so popular with the darlings of the media, youth see this as a way to relate to their inner emotions. Adult women are more likely to turn to the "demure" than youth, well, in my opinion anyway. I still maintain that education, in all respects, leads to a classier sexiness.

I maintain that a beautiful, strong, intelligent woman who is comfortable also showing her physical "assets" is the epitome of sexiness.

as long as she wants to show herself off. i just want to cry sometimes when i see girls wearing next to nothing, disrespecting their body, their temple, to please other people. sexual liberation has gone too far, and needs to be reigned in.

on a side note, i hope this social trend starts affecting the gay community, i hate being a minority because i'm not promiscuous :(

I don't have any problem with people showing off however much of their bodies they want--but I tend to be a nudist, so if walking around nude was legal, I'd be happy, but it doesn't have anything to do with dressing "sexy". Sexy comes out of what you don't show off--it's when you hint things just enough.

I totally agree. Sex is a fantastic treat, but everything in moderation! When young ladies who are too young to be taking from that particular cookie jar are dressing that way, it makes my heart hurt too. You need to develop your mind and have some foundation of your identity before you can really enjoy and understand sex, and 12 & 13 is just way too freakin' young.....
