love the wall & staircase in your recent post, Janne Peters^
it's a really *great* colour palette :P Did you design this yourself, oiltrash?
I like the use of lighting.. it seems to be directional, it lets you move from place to place. Also like you've added the one giant red vase and plant
What are you using for wall paper?
Hey thanks!
I did design the office myself. The lighting is great, but sometimes I think it’s not suitable for a working environment, what can I do, I hate florescent lighting!! I used some sort of textured wallpaper that comes in white, then you apply paint on it.
Oiltrash

thank you oiltrash for sharing! i really love your style of decorating, so simple and classy!

and omg do i love the colour coordinated bookshelf! id like to share a secret with you guys... im kinda..addicted to arrange everything by colour :ninja: you should see my closet :innocent:
thanks so much susanna! :flower:

I posted in this thread awhile ago about furniture possibilities for my new apartment, and now that I move in just over a month I've started planning the design of the built-ins!

Here's my first design for my desk (+ storage unit). I think the grey/navy would be a good colour for the wall because, while getting a lot of sun-exposure, a darker, more subdued colour would be tonally very multifaceted.

The desk and unit would be done in white gloss, and the rectangle hanging on the wall is meant to be a mirror.
I would love to hear some comments or suggestions!

gwod, the design is great... i especially love the colour and the elegant simplicity.. i myself would have some trouble with the mirror if the desk is primarily used as a working place..i think it would be kind of distracting having myself in front of my face while working, but maybe thats just me!!
i however like the storage solution you chose..smart and chic :flower:

You guyyyyys! I just went to theee most fabulous house in the entire universe! No kidding!! Oh, I hate myself for not taking a camera with me!

Haha, thanks delonge, I actually didn't even consider how distracting it would be to constantly have my own face right in front of me while trying to study! Luckily the scale of the mirror is a bit exaggerated in that image so in reality there would be space to move it up the wall and still have it looking relatively centred.

Yeah, I think it'd great if you moved it high enough up that when one is sitting at the desk they're not also staring at their reflection the other time. Otherwise, very beautiful idea, looks great! :flower:

yep i agree, moving it a bit higher would be perfect for the mirror idea.. i just re-read your post GWOD, you NEEEEEEEEEEEED to take a picture of the furniture when everything is done, id love to see the white glossy surface!

GWOD - looks fantastic. I think the idea to move the mirror up the wall is a good one. also be mindful of cord/outlet placement as it's annoying to have cords tangling near your feet. good luck!

I love the design delonge and ultimately it depends on your work/life habits but just a couple things to keep in mind. Depending on how big/small your flat is, you may consider reversing the dark/light paint scheme. While I love a big bold dark wall, like you, my dark wall is the one that receives the light exposure and if I had to do things again, I probably would have reversed the color scheme because I live in a small flat with individual lamps (ie no overhead lights) and it would have made things brighter in the day. This may not be an issue for you though. Also - would it be awkward to do your work facing a wall with your back to the open room? I find this an awkward way to sit, and most people tend to have their backs to the wall, facing out to the rest of the room. But like I said - it depends on your habits. It looks great though and I love the built in shelves :flower:

yepp, meg i agree with you completely! its not ony a matter of design, its a matter of habit and feeling comfortable with it... when i moved out of my old room to get my own appatment in the city where i attend university right now, my dad re-decorated my old room.. when i came for a stay during the holidays, he really did an excellent job, but after a while i had to re-arrange everything about the desk/working place, because somehow it just didnt fit my habits.. e.g. I myself find it easier to work with my back to the open room ^_^ dunno why tho  so i guess it really is a matter of individual liking!

oh, but wasnt me who did the design, it was gwod! :flower:

I definitely would have preferred to be able to sit at my desk and look out over the room, but I just don't have the space in the apartment! That's actually why I though it would be a nice touch to have the mirror over the desk, so I still get that feeling of openness even if I'm facing the wall.

a friend of mine has her working room painted in a dark shade of red, also with her desk towards a wall.. she dealed with it by hanging up a huge bright painting above her desk.. doesnt neccessarily create the effect of having a larger room, but it lightens the whole working environment up so much, and you can still have your walls in a darker colour!

^ i like the colour coded books; it appeals to the obsessive compulsive in me!

Take a look at the, I think it's called Home for your books thread. We looked at different shots & decided it was a light effect, not the books at all.

It's instinctive for many people to sit in a power position, that is, where you can see the door. The mirror kind of makes up for that, but from a feng shui perspective, you'd be better off the other way. Next time you go to a business meeting, notice where the important people sit  They will almost never choose to sit with their backs to the door.
