Vespa 'GS' - The Real Story !
Sounds entertaining but, not true I'm afraid..The 'GS' you are referring to actually stands for 'Gran Sport' and not Gordon (and STING'S actual surname spelling is SUMNER not SUMMER)
Also, there was more than one star scooter specially built for the film Quadrophenia for a number of reasons.
Firstly, as everyone knows, the Sting GS was propelled off the cliff edge at Beachy Head and was smashed to pieces in the process. This took two tries! one at high tide and one at low. Two scooters, therefore, met their watery doom at this the end point of the film.
Secondly, Sting might be a talented singer, but he sure couldn't ride a scooter. His lack of clutch control became quite a worry before he finally sussed out the Vespa clutch on take off after dropping his GS unceremoniously on the deck more than once in the process. Some 'Ace Face'!
Four GS's actually a TS 125, as a prototype, plus three of the then current Vespa flagship model, the Rally 200 were prepared by Ron (The Con) Pymm of Stirling Scooters of West Drayton, Middlesex to cover the projected losses and damage predicted in the course of the making of the film. One GS only survived this mistreatment and ended up as the property of Jon Amberson (an employee from the Who Films Ltd and continuity man on the film set), allegedly, partly in lieu of non-payment of his retainer.
The current owner of the only remaining Vespa 'GS' from the movie 'Quadrophenia' is Dave Wyburn a House Builder who lives near Glouscester, Dave actually features in the 13 Aug 2005 - Issue of 'SCOOTERIST SCENE' magazine, you can read the actual story here:
