The Official Men's Magazine Thread

Considering she's Japanese, I hardly think it's surprising a Japanese magazine chose to highlight her.

Just for the record, my amazement was only that it ended up being GQ who gave her the cover, not that an actual magazine chose to do so. It's not exactly a magazine who'll rush to cover female athletes, least of all tennis players. But Naomi's struck some sort of national pride chord in the Japanese which I find rather charming to witness.

I agree with most of what you're saying except the bit claiming Naomi got more coverage from the situation, and therefore alluding that she may have reaped more benefit. True too, yet I very much doubt whether she'd have wanted the acclaim on those terms. The way I see it she was collateral. Not exactly a way I'd like to remember my first major win personally, but oh well.

And as for which magazine paid tribute to her win? Considering she's Japanese, I hardly think it's surprising a Japanese magazine chose to highlight her.

Because Japanese fashion magazines are ``quite´´ racist and do not put many Japanese stars on their covers, look at Vogue Nippon. It´s clear they have a problem with black or darker skin.

As someone who doesn't follow Tennis whatsoever, I only know the name Naomi Osaka because of the Serena controversy. Whether she enjoyed the coverage or not is a separate thing, but I think it's just about undeniable that her coverage increased because of it. First mentioned as an aside, but then people realized how unfair that was and she got more genuine praise and attention on her own merit. I wouldn't like to remember my first win that way either, but if it directly or indirectly helps get me magazine covers and, possibly lucrative endorsement deals, etc. then I'd probably roll with it.

GQ Style US Holiday 2018: Ezra Miller by Yoshiyuki Matsumura

Looks like he's puffing up his chest, not a great cover. Thought it was for one of those odd mark editions, India or Taiwan. And the animal print certainly won't sway me over.

The December 2018 issue of UK GQ (Anthony Joshua, shot by Gavin Bond, on the cover for the fourth time in the magazine's history) sees the magazine celebrate its 30th anniversary.

On the newsstand, it's wrapped in plastic, but flicking through zinio, I see there's an extended editor's letter - with many reprinted cover shots - which takes in the changing face of men's magazines over the past few decades. I wonder whether he had plans to still be around at GQ to write that, unlike Alexandra, who always stated she was staying on at Vogue for that anniversary issue.

Strange, yet interesting cover shot...I think I like it?

Agreed, not sure if I like it, but it's certainly interesting because this is not the kind of thematic shot which we generally see on magazines aimed at men. Even the most hardcore HF ones like Vogue Hommes keeps it simple.

US GQ December 2018, cover 1 out of 4: Michael B Jordan

His 'serious' face always look so forced. Fed up with this guy everywhere. He's as fake and corny as that setting. Keen to see who what Golding's cover will look like, because the other two names don't appeal to me at all.

So GQ got the Serena exclusive i see

I like the use of colors on Henry's cover. I don't like his face in the picture -he's cute, GQ could've done something better- but in some way, the cover works for me.
