Considering she's Japanese, I hardly think it's surprising a Japanese magazine chose to highlight her.
Just for the record, my amazement was only that it ended up being GQ who gave her the cover, not that an actual magazine chose to do so. It's not exactly a magazine who'll rush to cover female athletes, least of all tennis players. But Naomi's struck some sort of national pride chord in the Japanese which I find rather charming to witness.
I agree with most of what you're saying except the bit claiming Naomi got more coverage from the situation, and therefore alluding that she may have reaped more benefit. True too, yet I very much doubt whether she'd have wanted the acclaim on those terms. The way I see it she was collateral. Not exactly a way I'd like to remember my first major win personally, but oh well.
