The Row - The All-Things The Row Thread

Yes I have known them for years and it just bothers me how people are in love and OBSESSED with them when they do not know what they are really like...I know I can get out of hand some times but they are just not nice, smart, or mature people...

Any way I have been very bad going off topic so...more about The Row I suppose

Would you please develop what you say , even just a little bit because it's really hard to believe you :flower:

I think maybe....it's not very classy to talk about knowing industry people on a forum, I don't think it gives a very good impression, I do think PM is a better way to go - especially with the new rules about giving out contact details etc, it's probably better for your safety too because there are a lot of MK&A fans here and if anybody gets wind of you being acquainted, things might get a little out of hand.

Would you mind PMing me too, joiedemode? I can completely understand if you don't want to, though.

ah, oh dear-

i hope it does not become too troublesome or demanding for you, but could you also PM me? :flower:

hmm, not sure why there is so much dislike (not to say hate) for them making this line!
it IS good. i have seen it and have seen them dealing with their stockists themselves explaining every single piece and even trying them on and modelling and letting us take pictures..
they seemed very hands on and genuinely ineterested in what they do.

i would like to add that many (if not most) designers are way too arrogant to even sit through an order when a retailer arrives...

i am very much anticipating seeing the new collection in their apartment showroom in paris :) and i really believe in their work!

I enjoyed reading your perspective. Do you think their patience has more to do with them having to prove themselve more since they are celebrities? After all, once a designer is established then they don't need to take these types of measures.

Selling a product isn't the same as having the technical and creative skill to produce it. I don't at all begrudge the Olsens for doing their thing. I just feel for people who actually go to fashion school to learn the trade only to see celebrities given the same credit.

i see where you are coming from madhuri but i doubt that they are just doing it because "they have to". they behave in a very casual way doing their thing, eating a toast, having a cigarette and coming back to their work. so the impression i got is a very natural, not forced one.

now with regards to "real" designers often struggling. its true but to be honest i do see their line as a proper designer line. now whether they actually sit and sketch and sew and item together, is not for me to comment on. the final product is what i care about. and if i were in their shoes i would have done the same. the difference between their line and other so called designer lines is that the Olsens actually have taste (it might not be everyones taste) and they know what the fashion industry wants right now. they are playing with the big ones not the mass market and IMO they did all the right things. now, i did only see one entire collection IRL and will hold my breath until the SS08 collection.... but i have big faith in them!

i think i may invest in the v neck tee..but i want to know from someone is it really worth it?

exactly. i think it's pretty pointless to go on and on about how they have no formal training and such. sure, there are designers who go to school for years and can't seem to get any publicity, but you know, if they're good they're gonna find a way and they're gonna rise to the top.

if a "celebrity" line is good, it's gonna stay. if not, it's gonna flop. no different than any other person's line.

this is no different than you or i creating a line, just out of the passion for creating things you love. they're making a career out of it... so sue them.

while i'm at it,
WHAT'S THE E.T.A. ON THE MENSWEAR?

I agree. But The Row is not poor quality or design. They are well made, thought out products. While I hesitate to say they are well designed (because, quite frankly they are not very designed at all), they are well cut and fitted. While I admire Phillip Lim's work, and his choice to limit the price-point of his collection, he is just as lucky as they are to be in his charmed situation. Quite frankly, his stuff is nothing that has not been done before (or that is not being done by dozens of others currently). He makes cute things, but his success is more tied to his relationship with the press and his low prices than it is with genious designing.

And you're saying that The Row is making breakthrough items that we have not seen before? If you're going to accuse Philip Lim of not having genius design and his success is based on press, then I hope you include the Row, because if anything is based on someone's relationship with the press and not "genius designing" then the Row fits the bill.

I have nothing against the Row, but it's like the pot calling the kettle black.

here's what looks to be a ripoff of YSL and the row!!!
it costs 58$ at urban outfitters.

That was exactly my point. That Phillip was the pot calling the kettle black; that he is more like The Row than not, and that he should consider himself just as lucky as they are. Because, yes, I do think they are incredibly lucky to get their line into press and stores, but that does not take away from its merits as a line.
