Also, I wonder why Serena unleashes her wrath during the US Open. I swear she's nicer in other slams even when she's losing terribly in them.

^And she did that on such a somber day in New York! I'm her biggest fan but it was honestly a letdown to see her lose it like that.

Wow, to say I didn't expect that result would be an understatement. Totally thought Serena would win that trophy. I don't care for Stosur that much either, so I wasn't that excited, but after seeing Serena pull that again I'm glad it's anyone but her. I don't know what gets into her.

leeroi,it's because it's home turf and she can get the fans on her side. if she did that at RG....no. and heaven forbid if this situation were at the australian open against sam,you know they would all turn against her. i would even say as democratic as wimby fans tend to be,they too wouldn't be so pleased with this behaviour.

i think what disappoints me more than anything was after watching her throughout this summer and seeing such a new attitude and perspective about herself and the game.....suddenly when things don't go her way,she loses it. i think that's what happens when one begins to fall for their own hype....the crash and burn. she underestimated sam stosur.

and btw, because of that little bratty tongue lashing she gave asderaki, she did receive a code violation for verbal abuse and since she's still on probation at the open,i'm sure she will receive a fine. i would hope but i don't expect her to,after learning the specifics of that particular rule, she apologises to asderaki. asderaki is one of the best and fairest officials in this game, she did not deserve that abuse.

i wonder though if that had been lynne welch would serena still have pulled that nonsense? a lot of the players don't argue with lynnie that much i notice.....she seems very intimidating and very commanding.

If a sportsperson can't master the art of self-control when things aren't going their way, they deserve to lose the matches they play and the respect of those watching.

Well Serena was fined 2000 dollars for the verbal abuse. Serena obviously thought she hit a winner and her "COME ON" disrupted Sam's attention.
So the umpire call was correct.

Honestly I think it was in the heat of the moment. She was losing and she's very competitive. When she was talking to chair umpire she thought she thought it was the same one that made her lose against Capriati in 04:

You can see a little bit of resemblance.

Mariana%20Alves.jpg

So you can see why she harbors a lot feelings toward chair umpires.
And in her defense she never blames her opponents. She always apologizes after. It's not like she leaves and doesn't congratulate them.

On another point this match is killing me. Rafa please get it together! :(

^I'm with you. If anything this will only fire her up even more.
I do hope she apologizes to the chair umpire though. That poor woman! You'd think if Serena had so much go against someone who 'screwed' her over she'd remember her face:lol:

^i seriously doubt she will apologise. let's face it serena hates to admit when she's wrong even when proven otherwise. and look how many half-hearted statements she released before she issued a proper apology to that lines-woman she berated? and by that point it had become insincere.

and 2k$? what a crock. for anybody else that was on probation that would have been much more(mcenroe said earlier today he's been fined for 10k$ way back in the 80's)...possibly even a ban. everybody keeps making that argument about mcenroe too but then you see what kind of fines she receives and the argument suddenly is pointless. also, what message does that send to young kids across the globe? that if an elite tennis athlete can have a bratty hissy fit and get away with calling an official terrible names, then i can too. 2,000$ is mad money for somebody like serena williams. give me a break.

anyway, congrats to nole!! what a superb match. didn't look as such by the score but it was well fought. down 0-2 in both sets, fought back had a bit of weary moment in the third but dominated that final set. well done.

Agree Scott. The scoreline is deceiving: Rafa and Nole fought each other well. Congrats to Nole. What a year!! Rafa, keep fighting. Both are such great champs, plus Fed (who is still "right there"), Muzza, Delpo, and many more coming up next year (Dolgo, Raonic, Tomic, etc). Next season might be even better fromthe fab four and up and comers.

Hope Serena apologises too. But she didn't seem remorseful about the previous incident. Serena stands her ground, anyhow. At least she was friendly with Sam.

That men's final was some of the most insane tennis I've ever seen. It was actually almost exhausting watching it, the amount of energy each player was expending.

When the fourth set started I really thought Nadal was going to come back and win. Somewhere Nole found the energy.

I must say I'm impressed with the level of concentration that both are able to keep up during that match, especially given the conditions. The crowd was especially raucous.

The rest of the top ten must have been watching that in disbelief. This is what they need to produce in order to win a big title like that.

So now Djokovic has three slams and has only lost twice this year (one time being a retirement). Is this the best year a tennis player has ever had? He's certainly rivalling some of the best Federer and McEnroe had. And how much longer can he keep going like this?

ridiculous that sam only rose three spots in the rankings yet sharapova gained enough points from her summer and of course a contribution from vera's loss in the QF,that she overtook azarenka to move up to the no.2 spot? coincidentally, this same occurrence happened with li na and petra kvitova as well. really unfortunate how much quantity plays into ones status. the major winners should definitely have more of an increased advantage in the points. these are this sport's biggest titles and it's ultimately what these elite players play for. they can pay more in prize money but the value of the point awards is atrocious.

^Exactly. It's getting embarrassing for Woz to hold on to the No.1 spot without any major title wins!

i've never really realised this before but ever since they cut the calendar back, there is no longer a real indoor season anymore. more to the point, tokyo changed from that early season indoor event to become an outdoor HC event in the autumn. so only Linz,Moscow and Luxembourg(which is now usually played by the lower-ranked players as it's the week before the championships)exist anymore. i really loved this part of the european indoor season when it was a full sort of emphasized part of the calendar.....there was always a certain kind of excitement it being autumn and being in europe for much of the season......zurich,linz,stuttgart(which is now a clay lead-up for RG),moscow and luxembourg.

btw, really unfortunate maria had to retire against kvitova....nevertheless i am really pleased to see petra back to her winning ways again. hopefully,if she gets to the final(and zvonareva is a winnable match,i think)perhaps it will shut some of these idiots who are saying some pretty horrendous and disparaging things about the women champs this year up once and for all.

The WTA Championships start tomorrow in Istanbul and the top eight in the Race are there.

Azarenka was missing from these pics taken at the draw ceremony as she was wrapping up her title in Luxembourg.

Red Group
Wozniacki
Kvitova
Zvonareva
Radwanska

White Group
Sharapova
Azarenka
Li
Stosur

Bartoli and Petkovic are there as reserves.

Top two from each group progress. Predictions? Or is it even possible to predict this?

kvitova looks stunning! just so ethereal. a li na never disappoints. petko looks rather good as well. that dress is working for her.

i dunno, the groups look tough. the only thing i'm wary about is wozniacki who has struggled a bit these last few months and of course li na who hasn't performed well at all since RG. apart from that, just health-wise i hope the girls can sustain themselves through the course. vera had a bit of a shoulder issue in moscow and maria is playing for the first time since the ankle injury in tokyo against vera. but i'm so looking forward. it's kind of interesting they sort of paired off the big hitting baseliners with the more versatile players in the red group. and yeah kvitova is a power player but she's a little like a svetlana though than say a sharapova.

Totally agree with you on these. Not so keen on some of the others. And what did they do to Vera?

Didn't get to see Petra vs Vera today but scoreline looks fairly dominant from Petra. I think she must be many people's favourite for the title. She can beat pretty much anyone if she's on her game. I think she is rediscovering her top form of late.

Not impressed with Wozniacki at all. I still don't feel like she's proactively seeking the win. She was lucky today that Aga's shoulder flared up again and made her useless until the painkillers kicked in. Don't see Caro winning this at all. Plus her dad coming on court every couple of games to scream at her in Polish. :ninja: Never been a big fan of on-court coaching but I do believe that if there's one player who needs to ween herself off it it's Woz.

And Stosur got her first win against Masha in 10 meetings. Sammy's in a great position now, especially if Na doesn't turn up.

Guess I had to post these seeing as they are done to coincide with the WTA Championships.

after the first four games of that first set being split that's when petra really took charge and her body language for the entire match was utterly impressive, imo. she looked like she wanted that first win and especially the revenge aspect, having lost to vera so easily a few weeks ago in japan. but she really seems like she's got a lot of her footing back after that win at linz. and btw, petra now has a 15-0 streak on indoor surfaces this season with her win in paris over clijsters, linz and today.

very impressed with how sam stosur played as well today. it's a wonder how she can play this well but had such a poor run of form following the open and preceding this event. she may actually be following the footsteps of some of her other veteran peers in that they play their best on the bigger stages and against the best players.

disappointed with radwanska. i was really thinking when she fought back in the third set she was going to run away with it simply because her confidence is higher and caro would break down mentally. agree with you completely though on woz. i was thinking about this yesterday when i saw some of the pre-tourney interviews that she kind of comes across a little indifferent, really. i mean she never really seems to ooze confidence. it's always "i hope" or "we'll see". and i too think that approach is in her tennis as well.

Sam Smith on Eurosport was talking about this very point today. In her view Kirilenko was playing at her absolute top form when she beat Stosur two tournaments in a row so you could argue Sam was a bit unlucky. She made the final of Osaka after that. I can see her point. I don't think Sam's form has dropped, she just ran into a player she particularly struggles against.
