the article is all around the place with its constructions, IMO.
she keeps forgetting that all of the descriptions of men steam from Bella's perspective and that it's nowhere near the real and objective picture and that, considering Meyer's way of writing it's very easy to project through Bella (also considering Meyer's religious background it's hard not to connect the dots if one has any doubts of Meyer's implications about the "role of females") and it's also the magnet for why this became such a hit (IMO). i don't think it's even worth pointing out or debating if these books are degrading to women since it's far too obvious, but what i don't agree with is that people (women specifically as a significant part of this group as you said) hate this cus it's degrading. i think that most of them hate it first and foremost cus of its guerilla promotion for years now, the fact it's "as popular as it gets" and then there those who actually read it (mostly women) to form the "degrading point" of view on it. i think those are in minority, but thankfully, with a voice strong enough.
all i know that i wouldn't want for my daughter (that is, if i ever have one) to read this before she's out of her puberty with certain feminism ideas instilled in her to be able to critically observe these books so that it will or won't become a guilty, fun "pleasure".
