The Tennis Thread

well sam generally has consistency issues anyway so it's not always a big surprise to see her have these big wins(for which she has the kind of game to do) and kind of lull for an extended period, although she had a nice tournament at the YE championships.....she was the only other player beside azarenka in the final to take a set off a red-hot kvitova.

OMGOSSSSH, I didn't really know there was a tennis thread here!, my two loves, models and tennis ALL in one spot

Welcome kournikov! :)

I'm really excited for Fed vs Delpo. Only drawback is it's going to be on in the middle of the night here. But I think I'm going to set my alarm and see if I can wake up.

Couple of upsets yesterday. Didn't expect Tsonga losing to Nishikori. And Makarova got another huge win, this time over Serena. I wonder if this is now proving to Serena that you can't be a part-time player any more?

woz gone now. great comeback from kim against li na and she didn't look at all hampered by that ankle today.

crossing my fingers the trend of upsets will end now unless it's makarova over sharapova. no offense to sharapova fans but i am really loving the way she's playing this fortnight. i just want to see a kvitova VS azarenka final.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, Federer defeated Del Potro in straight sets, the match looked pretty good in the first set, but then after that Federer just rolled with it.

I can't believe Serena lost!, so unexpected!.

Sharapova is playing REALLY GOOD, haven't seen her play this well since 2008. I heard Clijsters took out Wozniacki in strong form.

Nadal and Berdych are playing in a couple of hours. Berdych isn't the fans favorite right now, especially after the whole handshake thing with Almagro.

Omg! Tennis thread! Federer = God. I lost interest in WTA because I feel like now it's very poor in term if technique and there isn't anyone really shining through and who provide great matches 90% of the time. Seems like they are more interesting in modelling than training. Federer played his 1000th match yesterday and got his 814th victory. What else? ;)

Well I did wake up early. Federer played so good! Bit surprised Delpo didn't offer up more resistance. I think Roger has a lot of respect for his game though and he made some nice comments about Juan Martin rising in the rankings.

1000 matches played and still going strong. Pretty impressive. :D

Scott - I'd go for Kvitova vs Azarenka or Kim. Don't mind which. I think it would be only right for Petra to get that world no.1 spot and a slam win would really cap it off.

Federer vs. Nadal coming up!

Sharapova won, I'd really want her to win another slam, but I think Azarenka finally deserves one. (I ballboyed for Azarenka a couple of years ago, she's so nice!)

^ I guess you'll now be able to watch Sharapova play against Azarenka in the final;) I'll personally be rooting for Azarenka even though this will be her first grand slam final.

Just watched a brilliant game between Nadal and Federer in the second set where Federer was broken. Nadal made two insane passing shots, but then again what else should've I expected.

Yay for Azarenka and Sharapova. This could not have gone any better for me. Azarenka really battled it out with Kim. I give her major props for coming back in the third set and not letting the second set get her down. Kim played well and seemed to get everything back, so the fact that Vika was able to pull away with a win really speaks volume for her.

Watched the first set of Sharapova's match (before I just had to go to sleep, lol) and her game seemed much more consistent and less erratic than it was last summer. I see Sharapova lost the second set and Kvitova had good chances in third, so I'm not sure if Sharapova's game went down or if Kvotova's game went up.

Either way, it's going to be a great final. I don't even care who wins at this point. If I had to choose, I'd go with Maria, if only because it was be a great way for her to make a statement after making that comeback and losing in Wimbledon. Azarenka making her first GS final would be a good enough result. But again, I'll be happy with either one winning.

^agreed. or at least two of three were. really disappointing kvitova didn't get a stranglehold on all those break chances. she really should have won that match 6/1 in the third. would have loved to see that rivalry(??) against azarenka continue here.

but i loved her attitude afterward....just very positive and very determined to keep going. and you know,i think it gets lost in all this chatter that this was only her second major semifinal outside her wimbledon crown. so all in all, many positives,a great start to the season and certainly a sign of what could potentially lie ahead this season. hopefully some redemption for her RG collapse, firstly.

MyNameIs,definitely kvitova lifted her game. she played ever-so poorly in that first set but what i've come to appreciate about her is her ability to stay mentally tough, raise the level of her game even when she's not at her best. she played a masterful second set,a la wimbledon. third set however she kept herself close but kind of had one of her bad patches and just couldn't get a stranglehold on the many break chances she was given and mainly i feel because of maria's inconsistency on those break chances. she would hit an atrocious serve...a double fault....give kvitova a break chance, and then come back and hit a good one. watching that was incredibly frustrating,i can't imagine how frustrating it was for kvitova. she really should have won 6/1 in that final set. it was definitely on her racquet.

^That's too bad about Sharapova then (the inconsistent third set). I really thought she got her game together after watching that first set, where I thought she was very consistent, compared to some of her matches last summer. This really is as good a chance as she might ever have to win another GS, she needs to take advantage of that. Barring a freak injury, Azarenka will be here many times in the future, I believe. With Maria, you just never know.

I love Petra's game, but personally I think it's nice to see Maria - who's struggled so much since her shoulder surgery - get back to good form. Ironically, she was the steadier one in that match, and thus she deserved and earned the win. Kvitova has to learn to cut out errors, when to play safer, etc. It'll come. She'll probably dominate in the future. Meanwhile, much as I don't love Azarenka's whoo's throughout a match, it was touching to see her reaction at the end of the semi, reaching her first slam final. She was so very motivated and focused versus Clijster's - did not allow her emotions into it. It was refreshing to see her so focused like that.

Rafa and Fed? I had no particular preference, but Rafa clearly owns Fed for some reason. Fed was cruising through the draw, and then bam! Loses to Nadal like clockwork.

I hope the winner of Murray/Djokovic wins the title as Nadal (and Fed) already has so many slam titles.

i'm sure vika breathed a sigh of relief she didn't have to face petra in the final. petra owns vika at this juncture, beating her all the times they played last year but against maria she does have an edge. maria beat vika at rome by retirement but vika beat maria the previous two times at miami when vika won that title and in the final at stanford the year prior....so if there is anything to draw inspiration from it's that. also, strategically,if vika keeps the points longer....moves maria forward....use those angles like she did against clijsters.....vika will have a good chance.

i'm kind of rooting for victoria though. i'd love to see her get that major.

but andy last night.....i feel so terrible for him. he definitely came in with a lot of motivation and a lot of confidence and just like federer....bam....didn't happen.

Yes, for me, in the ladies final, I will be happy for either: great comeback story or first slam. Either way it will be emotional.

As for Andy, yes, so close!!! Wow what a match. I think Murray is a bit the opposite of Petra. Rather than pulling back a little at key moments to cut back on errors, Andy needs to go big in big moments. He did that last night, in some of the big points, but not all of them. Also, he still needs a better second serve. Nole's was a better weapon for him so even when firsts aren't going in he can still dictate in rallies. But with Andy's second so attackable, it puts him into defence immediately. Still, that match was a turning point for him, methinks. He will win a slam - and this year, I should think.

Well just FYI people, I used to be OBSESSED with Tennis 2004-2009ish, I stopped watching for two years and just started again with this Australian Open...so around the time I left, Venus and Serena were still good, Ivanovic and Jankovic were supposed to be the next big things in tennis, Henin and Clijsters were retired, and Sharapova was injured all the time. Nadal and Federer owned mens, Djokovic wasn't doing good, Roddick was still in the top five, Murray was seen as a grumpy kid...and then I come back and BAM!, Djokovic is the hottest thing right now, and Juan Martin Del Potro is good, Murray/Djokovic/Nadal/Federer is a great rivalry. Serena and Venus not so big anymore, Sharapova is making a comeback, unfortunately Ivanovic and Jankovic aren't really anything big in the game anymore, Azarenka I am happy to see doing well, Wozniacki I did not expect to be a #1 player at all, and from out of NOWHERE this girl named Petra Kvitova wins Wimbledon?, and the WTA Championships?, weird, I haven't ever heard of this girl, and she beats all of the top players.

Sharapova definitely deserved that win against Kvitova, Sharapova was getting everything back, a lot of rallies, and great shots. They weren't playing their best, but still Sharapova UPPED her game, in my opinion. I didn't get to watch the Clijsters/Azarenka match, but I heard it was good. I want Azarenka to win, because she deserves a major, but I like both Sharapova and Azarenka, it'll definitely be a SCREAM-A-THON.

I'm glad Nadal beat Federer!!!!!!!!!...I guess Djokovic beat Murray...shall be an interesting final...going for Nadal!

Let's see who'll win tonight?
