Tips on Overall Health and Beauty

Ooo I'll be trying many of these.

-Nivea Lotion is my best kept secret.

Works wonders.

Yeah I have bottles of it at my house. I use it every day. :P

^^ I usually have dry skin, but its pretty good but incredibly rich!

Along with drinking 8 glasses of water, remember not to drink all of it from the bottle (providing of course that your local water is safe to drink). Bottled water usually has no fluoride, which is added to most tap water depending on location. And the fluoride in the water is why most of us will still have our own teeth when we are older, as opposed to older generations. (Touchwood)

I think keeping your feet looking nice (pedicures) is a good basic thing that makes a world of difference! I need to do better about that in '07^_^ I walk around barefoot allot so I need to wear houseshoes or socks more:P

^^ Me too. You know you feel TONS better when you have a pedicure, but it's one of those things that you never get around to doing. More of that in 2007 for me too!

^I know its like I feel so much better if i have a shower my hair is freshly clean, I have just brushed my teeth my skin is clean and I have given myself a a manicure and pediucure done, if I look nice it will generally lift my mood!

Oh and the turning the cold tap on after hair washing makes no difference to my hair, however, you are supposed to turn the water cold after showering as it closes back up your bodies pores after they have been opened by hot water.

^I've heard that too, but I feel like it might be a bit of a myth. I will do some research and post again later.

As far as the pedicures go, I think getting too many might be my problem...

I read from a magazine that the electric radiation from computer screens ages skin. Has anyone else heard of this? Any studies showing the truth of it?

Is there a link between skin and computers/televisions?

This is very true...i can tell you from experience to be VERY careful about using vaseline on the eyelashes

Vaseline for lips overnight does wonders though...then rub off w/washcloth (to exfoliate)

-walk bare feet as much as you can (or with socks) it helps the bloodcirculation

How does it help circulation more than alking in comfortable shoes?
Heels generally restrict circulation, right?

I too am interested in knowing about how much electronic lighting from moniters and TVs and flourscent lights effect our skin, but so far the only article I have found on the subject is this. Tell me what you think:

Dear Paula,
I recently came across an article in an overseas magazine. It said that the worst skin-care mistake women can make is thinking that they don't need to wear a sunscreen at night. According to the article, the fluorescent lights in our apartments and UV lights in the nightclubs emit strong UV rays, while the microwave, TV, and heater produce infra-red rays. Apparently if we stay near these light or heat sources for a long time, our skin will try to protect itself by producing extra melanin, resulting in uneven skin tone and freckles. To avoid this happening, the magazine suggested wearing sunscreen 24 hours a day. What do you think, Paula? I have indeed seen some sunscreens that claim to block UVA, UVB, and infra-red rays. What damage does infra-red do to our skin, and do you recommend wearing sunscreen at night?

Cindy, via e-mail

Dear Cindy,
Fluorescent lights absolutely do put out about 320 to 400 nanometers of UV emission, which is about the same range of UVB and UVA emission from the sun, and in full office light that could technically be a problem for the same reason it is a problem from the sun. However, the amount of energy present is so small that it isn't a problem under office or grocery store-type lighting conditions. Even more to the point, the notion that the amount of fluorescent light being emitted in dimly lit evening spots (assuming they even use fluorescent light, versus incandescent lighting) could damage skin is just bizarre. Further, there is no research establishing infra-red rays as being a problem for skin cells.

Then what form of water is best to drink, tap? What about Britta filtered water? I've been trying to figure out what's true and what's just hype in the water industry, it's really difficult to get accurate info. I've even heard that osmosis-filtered watered can remove or drain minerals from your body because it's "too purified." I don't understand that one, does anyone else?

I can't believe China only got dental floss in recent times. Wow! I wonder why only recently?
Have you been having many dental problems due to your lack of floss?

What does Vaseline do to the lips that is different from lip based moisturizers?

I think that you should just make sure that tap water constitutes a reasonable amount of the water you drink, i.e. don't just drink bottled water 100% of the time. As for the Brita filters, i'm not sure if they filter out the fluoride or not.

These are great tips, I agree with the whole manicure and pedicure thing- I find that when my hair, nails, skin and eyebrows look good I feel better.

I dunno about drinking tap water...I live in Canada where there's supposed to be an abundance of clean water but the stuff that comes out of my tap in Waterloo, ON has floating white particles in it and tastes funny. It's better in Toronto but I still wouldn't drink it. If it's just about the fluoride I think this is mostly to protect people who don't brush their teeth properly (or don't brush their teeth...), and like they say not to swallow your toothpaste, I don't think fluoride is that safe to be drinking. The only place I would drink tap water is in parts of the country like Labrador, where it is so pure that it will not conduct electricity. I'd say at least Brita filter your tap water, it removes a lot of crap. I can literally see a difference when I run it through the pitcher. :S

P.S. Brita filters don't remove fluoride, says the Brita people. They do remove the impurities I can see though.
