I agree... the japan times wrote a pretty scathing review of the week.... not necessarily that the collections were bad, per se, but just that there was nothing that really *popped* on everyone's radar.
I agree totally with paulv that taishi nobukuni and dresscamp were great shows. dresscamp had the glamour and over-the-top wackyness that could be compared only to galliano, and as for taishi...well, i have to give props to someone with the guts to send a binladen lookalike down the runway.
i actually got to sit next to suzy at the dresscamp show... i didnt dare ask her her opinion right there, but merely thanked her for coming all the way out here to see the shows, and she said she was having a great time. she was also a little miffed that the dresscamp show got started over an hour late...
(as was everyone else!)
my honorable mention goes to GVGV for having an amazing runway and gorgeous shoes.
i noticed a few trends....leggings and fur detailing were EVERYWHERE a la the western shows.... but also lots of 80s style long, loose coats, and HUGE necks. as in, large scarves and mufflers wrapped around the neck like they are swallowing the head (a la theatre products)...or huge collars on sweaters and jackets (satoru tanaka), etc. nearly every show the first day showed this oversized neck area trend.
the best shows are yet to come.... mister hollywood, green, triptych, lad musician, limi feu, etc....
next year, Japan Fashion week has been moved UP.... to the very beginning of september... they wont be able to copy the western brands trends anymore... this will either cause the industry to flourish or die. im hoping it forces more creativity...then the foreign press will HAVE to take notice... rather than it just being mere copies... heres hoping for the best!

paulv said:Hi, the Tokyo Collections were OK this season. Taishi Nobukuni and Dress Camp were the highlights. I covered most of the shows for www.japanesestreets.com - so if you want more info have a look in the articles section. I think most of the photos should be on the site within the next week. Also - Suzy Menkes is a really interesting person - lots to say and pretty much admired/feared. She came to Tokyo for a couple of days and looked pretty much unimpressed by most of the shows - although I heard she liked the Yab-Yum collection.
