Tokyo Collections A/W '06-'07

I agree... the japan times wrote a pretty scathing review of the week.... not necessarily that the collections were bad, per se, but just that there was nothing that really *popped* on everyone's radar.

I agree totally with paulv that taishi nobukuni and dresscamp were great shows. dresscamp had the glamour and over-the-top wackyness that could be compared only to galliano, and as for taishi...well, i have to give props to someone with the guts to send a binladen lookalike down the runway.

i actually got to sit next to suzy at the dresscamp show... i didnt dare ask her her opinion right there, but merely thanked her for coming all the way out here to see the shows, and she said she was having a great time. she was also a little miffed that the dresscamp show got started over an hour late... :ninja: (as was everyone else!)

my honorable mention goes to GVGV for having an amazing runway and gorgeous shoes.

i noticed a few trends....leggings and fur detailing were EVERYWHERE a la the western shows.... but also lots of 80s style long, loose coats, and HUGE necks. as in, large scarves and mufflers wrapped around the neck like they are swallowing the head (a la theatre products)...or huge collars on sweaters and jackets (satoru tanaka), etc. nearly every show the first day showed this oversized neck area trend.

the best shows are yet to come.... mister hollywood, green, triptych, lad musician, limi feu, etc....

next year, Japan Fashion week has been moved UP.... to the very beginning of september... they wont be able to copy the western brands trends anymore... this will either cause the industry to flourish or die. im hoping it forces more creativity...then the foreign press will HAVE to take notice... rather than it just being mere copies... heres hoping for the best!

Hi, the Tokyo Collections were OK this season. Taishi Nobukuni and Dress Camp were the highlights. I covered most of the shows for www.japanesestreets.com - so if you want more info have a look in the articles section. I think most of the photos should be on the site within the next week. Also - Suzy Menkes is a really interesting person - lots to say and pretty much admired/feared. She came to Tokyo for a couple of days and looked pretty much unimpressed by most of the shows - although I heard she liked the Yab-Yum collection.

the lexington? the club?

baizilla, rochas is another liscensed line, i'm pretty sure... because the designer is japanese...theyre just using the name, probably like burberry... cant say im a fan of the idea, but i didnt get to the show so cant really have an opinion :ninja:

jea roen is mens collection... very punky.. two girls in the show.
and fullcount was a mix show .... both were held in ebisu garden hall and were quite big.... so...

I've seen some roen stuff before, they kinda look like a mastermind japan wanabe in some ways.

It obviously cannot be the same Rochas that we are talking about here, Olivier just received the CFDA award as the best international designer, so for what reason should they have appointed a new designer straight away? Is this a menswear or womenswear collection that we are talking about? I would much appreciate seeing pictures of this, anyone, please post any related news if you can.

not sure if roen is a mmj wannabe or they're all buddies and share their designs somehow... judging from the numerous collaborations especially in and between these three: mastermind japan, roen, and roarguns.

aren't they all the same afterall...? what's the big deal about mmj anyway? i even think roen and roar spend a bit more effort on cutting etc and not just putting silly skulls all over the place of very run-of-the-mill clothing and selling them for an arm and a leg. afterall, mmj's 'mastermind' used to be only a shop attendent of yohji's... and/or at best a 'stylist'... he's just a brilliant 'marketeer'... as with so many of these (underground) japanese designers.

don't get me wrong, i love the stuff... it's just once you step back and look at the whole picture... this 'underground'/avant-garde (whatever you want to call it) japanese scene is actually really really incestuous; friends helping each other out and patting each other on the back... backed by influential (music and media) friends to glorify all these so-called collaborations... look at Bape x Undercover x Neighborhood x etc..

still, the japanese do have a knack for style and vibe that others don't have, and boy do they create beautifully crafted products... here's some recent mmj/roarguns/roen collaborations; pretty kool how the logos merge :)

Among the new kids on the block at japan Fashion Week in Tokyo this season, the only one in the menswear department was the Rochas line by Masatomo, whose elegant but unpretentiously tailored pieces are created under an agreement between Tokyo-based Renown Inc. and the venerable Paris-based Rochas .

Sketches by Masatomo (below left) show his vision for a new menswear line for the venerable Rochas brand, including a black, double-breasted suit like this. ILLUSTRATIONS COURTESY OF MASATOMO
Masatomo, aka Rynshu Hashimoto, is well known at the Paris men's collections, where he has been showing his Masatomo line twice a year since 1992.
His is the first men's line for the womenswear and fragrances Rochas label since it was established in Paris in 1924 by Marcel Rochas , and is clean-cut while at the same time very easy to wear.

there seems to be something to be learned about the 'power of sharing' from the japanese.

I want the DRESSCAMP photos....
where can I find them???~~!!!!
pls help

I can´t believe this is true... It´s a shock factor to see how the name of Marcel Rochas is being exploited as yet another licensing deal for a foreign market... It would be absolutely fine if Olivier would have taken over the reigns but like this, I think it only washes down the image of what they build up with the womenswear so nicely. I need to see more pictures though.

Lad Musician was today (4/21 20:00) according to cfd.or.jp. I would love it if anyone that went could describe it or perhaps provide a link to pictures of some sort.

Dose anyone have more pictures of ato and dress camp? I am very interested in those two.
