To me, what Tom Ford is doing at the moment is absorbing and incorporating elements from elsewhere, and reproducing them under his own brand name to create an aesthetic that people come to recognise as 'his'.
He's not trying to be different, he's trying to create an empire, and he's doing it by building on things that have gone before, tweaking the look a little, adding a sense of exclusivity, slapping his name on it, and then selling it to us.
I can't fault the man for doing that. Personally, I find this pseudo-fierce campaign to be very bland, but it'll do the job.
