^Constance's hair color is just perfect, exactly the hair color I'd like to have^_^

I love this thread! I recently tried doing this to my hair but it came out really dark (orange:blush:). I think I'm gonna do it again! Hopefully it'll look better if not, I can always dye it black:D

Dark roots to dye for

If the spirit of the age is one of unrelenting economic woe, what better way to embrace it than with 'recession roots'?

Re-sprouting roots mean many things: "ropey hair needs fresh lick of dye" for one, "skanky" for another, but "hip"? Only in the trailer parks of Alabama. But then the markets crashed. Businesses folded. People lost their jobs. Which is where roots came in. Or, became "in".

Five-centimetre roots and coloured ends? Cool. Double the centimetres and you've got the hairstyle of the season - think Drew Barrymore and ex-The OC actress Rachel Bilson's glossy chocolate top and honeyed tips.

In an ironic twist, some salons are even offering dyed-in roots. Bleach in Dalston, east London, for one. It's headed by Alex Brownsell, the talented 22-year-old hair colourist whose work regularly features in Vogue , Dazed & Confused and i-D . She has worked for Hermès and Topshop, and her clients include Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller.

"Roots are trendy because of the recession - sounds naff, doesn't it?" she laughs, pushing back her tangle of white-blonde, peach-highlighted hair. "But it's true - which means bad news for traditional hairdressers." Business has been brisk since the salon opened three weeks ago.

In a spirit of faux frugality, then, I check in for "recession roots". My hair was dyed earlier this year, so all she has to do is to lift some of the lighter dye. She then intensifies the existing roots, taking them down to my cheeks to give me two-tone hair. To play up the haven't-touched-up-my-roots-in-yonks vibe, she lightens the end with bleach.

When she removes the foil, there are sighs of relief: from her, because my hair has taken well to the bleach, and from me, because I don't hate it. She runs a toner through the bits where dark meets light to blend for a natural finish, and washes it with Bumble and Bumble's Color Support Extra Mild Shampoo (£18, 0800 014 7424), which is gentle on bleached hair. I'm left with the recessionista look of obvious, overgrown roots and grown-out hair dye. It sounds grim, but looks elegant. I like it lots.

All this has me thinking: will the roots index be replacing the hemline theory as a harbinger of our economical fortunes?

I got my hair dyed two-tone today. I'm going to go a bit blonder on the ends in a few months time, but I'm loving it otherwise. It's quite subtle.

Here's a pic (source: my own picture)...

:o Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoa. Seriously? Was the color all you had done? Seems a little much, doesn't it? :ermm: Or, did you just go somewhere fancy? Or are you a generous tipper?

REcently I did it myself to my own hair for a mere couple of bucks.
My hair is dark blondish, shoulder lenght (Growing with prayers and all).

So I took some powder, mixed it with the creamy stuff (30 vol) and painted the ends of my hair messily. After 5 minutes i just jumped into the shower.

It looks messy and great. So natural. If I wanted to go darker I would do it again. But summer is coming, the beach will intensify the effect.

I feels a tad dry the first days, but nothing some maskintense and less blow dry won´t fix. ;)

Hey! Great! :woot: I'm really nervous about doing it myself, but reading that makes me think that it can't be too hard. The idea is that it isn't evenly distributed throughout the hair, so the messier the better. Within reason! Thanks newprincesita.

^^ Be super careful with the time you keep the stuff in your hair. I started with some minutes always checking the speed. It´s better to intensify later than to be sorry.

The goo is VERY bleaching so do it in the bathroom, and avoid coloured towels, and clothes. A mere drop is garanteed to ruin a jean or a shirt. Cos it´s like bleach. Old clothed....or just naked by yourself in the bathroom. Don´t be distracted by the phone or else, a couple of minutes of excessive exposure, and you go white. well it depends, but you know what I mean....

I started with my dirty hair and started massaging the stuff in the ends of the strands....going a little up or down (I mean closer or away from the roots)
If the effect is too subtle, you can always re-do after a couple of days.

When you wash be careful to remove EVERYTHING in a couple of shampoos and then be generous with the conditioning.

Good Luck! Tell us how it went!

One more advice....allways err on the side of caution. Always. Don´t assume anything, just experiment until you "get" how your hair behaves.

Until you train you eye to see colour, bear in mind that WET hair always look darker than dry. I mean you start the process with dry hair, but then you coat it with the mix and then you have to wash it. So the "final" colour you´ll see only after drying. In the process you peek and kind of "guess" how is that it goes.

So to be sure of the definite results you have to fully dry your hair, and check it in daylight for a couple of days.
Only then you can be sure that you need more, I mean you wanna go even lighter. It´s amazing how hair looks different in the sun than in than bathroom!

This two tone in not difficult at all, but it´s better to be safe and patient. You´ll love it...

Kristen Stewart had two-toned hair in 2008. I'm not a big fan of it though...
