Typography

Helvetica the film is out on DVD.

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica is currently screening at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide, and is now available on DVD.

This is an interesting thread about typography and copyrights on the web. Stemming from this quote about the new technology introduced to Safari.

"With CSS3 web fonts in Safari 3.1, web designers can go beyond web-safe fonts and use any font they want to create stunning new websites using standards-based technology. Safari automatically recognizes websites that use custom fonts and downloads them as they’re needed."

Now I have the handy skill of recognizing most fonts used on various documents, and I often impress my peers by throwing out phrases like, "Yeah, I like Bell MT, font size 14, myself."

Haha! That is the funniest thing!

I am crazy about fonts, this thread is amazing! I really should spend more time over here at Art & Design!

A few years ago, I had 'no' idea you could get fonts that weren't already on Word, I don't know what I was thinking!.. and when there wasn't a suitable font for some printmaking I was doing at college, I ended up using my own handwriting and 'photoshopping' it.

When I first stumbled across dafont.com, oh my god, I spent hours scrolling through every single page, checking out every single font. I was so amazed!.. I even collect them, I print them as their name and keep it in a notebook for when I may need it. I don't trust keeping everything on my computer!

THE LAST CALLIGRAPHERS
http://musalman.100hands.net/

"For centuries, handwriting was the definitive mark of social status, education and liberal values in India. Calligraphers mastered the swooping Urdu script in ivory-tower institutions and penned copies of the Koran for wealthy patrons. The pinnacle of a katib's achievement meant a seat at court and a chance to earn the sultan's ear." - Scott Carney

The Musalman is the only handwritten newspaper in Asia and has been operational since 1927. Here is their story.

That's a fascinating story. I just researched and found an article on Wired talking about the paper, along with a photo gallery. Here's the link, if anyone's interested.

woohoo!

Woohoo!

I missed the movie when it was showing in my city. Tickets were quickly sold out.

Anbody here knows what typeface i-D uses? It looks almost identical to Helvetica, but there are some miiiiiinor changes I think. I'm unshure if it's Univers?

And yay, typography-talk on a fashion forum :flower:

Submit the font to WhattheFont.com and it will analyze it for you and suggest a bunch.

Well, just need to scan a page then. Thing is that whatthefont will probably identify it as helvetica, but I'm pretty shure it's not. I'll go to illy and check if it's univers, if not then it's always worth a shot. At least I got to use it to identify the old font they used ;)

edit: hah, I was right, it was Univers (and if anyone is curious, the one they used before the redesign where Avenir - no wonder I love i-D)

^i was wondering about that for ages...where can i get that font (Univers)?

I think it's linotype that distributes Univers - check out this link

«Think of it as a Swiss design with a French heart. As its weight increases, this personality becomes more apparent. The slight (but clearly visible) contrast in stroke weight, subtle angularity, and just the smallest hint of calligraphic brush stroke make Univers a typeface with a twinkle in its eye.»
— Allan Haley

More about the font here
