US Vogue March 2010 : Tina Fey by Mario Testino

She was a head writer for SNL, she created the biggest comedy on TV, she wrote "Mean Girls" which is probably the most quoted teen comedy of the last decade, she's won numerous awards, and she's been starring in multiple films such as "Date Night" with Steve Carrell which opens in April. I don't think there's any questioning of her credentials.

The Vogue staff is pathetic. Their numbers keep going down and down and down and their covers look the same every month. Maybe it's time to try something new? I have a feeling that they noticed their sales were going down so the Vogue staff decided to take a risk and publish a cover that was quite different... That cover would be the Gwenyth Paltrow cover from 2008. That cover, although different, was horrendous - leading to even worse sales. After that, they probably thought that taking risks were just going to make things worse when in fact the only reasons things got worse and they didn't sell any copies was because that particular cover was embarrassingly bad. They need to know that they can actually try something new and make it work well. Just hire Steven Meisel again, or something.

They keep trying to appeal to the "average American," but they don't realize that they are in fact losing their main cliental which is people who actually like art and fashion. The "average American" is intimidated by Vogue and they're most likely going to buy Cosmopolitan no matter what - you're better off just catering to the people who want to read Vogue in the first place and don't like looking at such boring covers.

If Vogue published an issue with, for example, Vogue Italia's November 2009 exact cover with Rianne ten Haken - what's the worst that could happen? I can imagine people would at least wonder who that girl is and be intrigued to buy the issue. They need to experiment at least once.

I would be much obliged if someone took a couple of minutes to try to explain to me why Vogue US prints almost exactly the same type of photo on the cover each month? Isn't creativity and development what fashion is about?

Fashion is (if not primarily) a business. If a formula sells, it will develop very slowly. Take the house of Chanel as an ideal example. There are other more daring magazines out there, but Vogue was never really about that. Why should it be? Isn't fashion also about appreciating and cultivating a classic, established sense of style and beauty?

^^ Yes, but the formula isn't working. People are tired of it, and their sales continue to plummet. Why not try something a little new?

I really don't like how short Vogue's cover story eds have got lately. I don't know if it's just me or not, but they seem to now only ever include two or three images. Where have the longer beautiful ones gone?

I'm aware the recession affected the magazines a lot, but even so, I'd still expect to see longer editorials with the cover stores.

^ Its not just you, its been like that for a while now actually, and they used to really go out with their cover stars, now its just so toned down. I mean even Elle is doing bigger, grander spreads with their cover stars.

The Newton homage is actually really cute. Honestly, the should have used that idea for all of the images; recreating iconic photographs in a humorous way. It wouldn't have been something new or exciting, but it would have been incredibly fitting and kind of fun too.

Doing another feature on Blake Lively...interesting...i always wondered how well her cover sold. I wonder if women like her enough, she doesn't seem to fall into the Megan Fox category but she also seems a bit aloof to be Sandra Bullock-esque.

Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin,

OMG! I like Robert Pattinson's spread. He looks so handsome :wub:

They both look great in that little editorial...I'm really surprised they didn't use him for the cover with Emilie.

^ But no one really knows (or cares) who Emilie is. Anna generally only puts established B or A list actresses on the cover. And I can't see them putting Robert on the cover with a woman after Bazaar (?) already did it with Kristen.

Emilie is very talented, i can see her getting a cover in the future. as for Robert, he's starting to look like Frankenstein with each picture.

I live in Argentina and I know her (I´m a big fan btw), I know people who knows her better than they know Jessica Biel or any other starlet from the states

Don't take this the wrong way. It doesn't really matter where you're from or who knows her more than who. What I really meant was what is US VOGUE's definition of a "star"? That what I really want to know.
