That's doubtful. But I do think we can see the pendulum swing and see more talented, popular, healthy-looking models soon. :flower:
popular and healthy-looking models? they are already with us, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Selita Banks ...... days ago in E! entertainmnet they were covering a photoshoot with Ale Ambrosio and another one with Heidi Klum where she was in a pool water.

But there is clearly a seperation between those models and the 'high fashion' models.

of course, but for people who is not into fashion (practically the 99%) models are just models, they are not worried about if they did the last Chanel show or not.

Look at the young Kate Moss. She was such a departure from the "sexy" supers of the time and, frankly, she was a strange looking girl. Odd features and a thin body. But she was and is still looked at as a major sex symbol.

a sex symbol for who? heterosexual men are not really into Kate Moss.:blink:

^I believe the shirts worn by the models on the cover were designed by GAP, correct?

and I don't see the uncommoness of the "Hilary" name when daily we have news of Hillary Clinton. :innocent:

Are there any OTHER really successful MODELS called Hilary? It sets her apart, even if she shares the name of a politician.

All I'm trying to say is that a models name is incredibly important to her career as it becomes her brand.

;)

I've been having fun these past few days getting friend's (who aren't into fashion or models) opinions on the cover models. It seems everyone loves Doutzen and Hilary the most. Some of them commented that Lily, Sasha, and Caroline looked alike. Most of them said Chanel was beautiful.

My brother insisted that the models were all off of America's Next Top Model

You are correct. Technically, it's Doo.Ri, Rodarte and Thakoon for Gap but still correct nonetheless. :flower:

Gemma, Raquel, Hilary - unusual names? I don't think so.
To be perfectly honest I don't think name has anything to do with it.

Obviously, there are millions of people with those names, but in the modelling world those names have been turned into brand-names for each of those girls.

It would truly be difficult for a model with one of those names to reach equal success as that of her namesake. Isn't this just common-sense?

Proof of this is that there has never been another Cindy, Claudia, Naomi, Kate, etc.

I, personally, think name can have a huge effect on one's career, not just models.

Just my opinion, however.

did you guys read the story about the models?
they were saying something like:"Gemma Ward is not considered a super model because she is not a household name...""...she was picked originally from the Prada campaign where people tried to find the girls who looked exactly the same..."...and if you ask an average American they wouldn't recognize the name Gemma Ward

Did Gemma do anything wrong to piss off Anna Wintour? Come on, she is probably more famous than any of the girls on the cover. She does not deserve the comments like that! It will potentially damage her career! :(
poor Gemma

^ No. If it's in this issue, I didn't have a chance to read the article because I can't locate it in stores yet.

I didn't like a lot of the comments about the models -- something about Lily being the smartest and knowing it, plus other little remarks made about some of the girls.

Have you tried searching at your local Barnes & Noble? I couldn't find the magazine at a few stores, but I finally spotted it at B&N yesterday.

I didn't really like that part of the article either. I just think though what they meant was.. look at Gemma Ward.. she is at the TOP TOP of the modelling industry now and STILL she is not a true supermodel because the average person does not know who she is. I interpreted the quote as .. not a diss on Gemma.. but just the state of the modelling industry at the moment. Its biggest star is still a virtual unknown in the public. She is just a face.

regarding my post #1111: please read page 302 mid column, second paragraph, row #4. and P219, 9th row from the very last paragraph.
i need to go back and find where the comments about an average person cna't recognize Gemma's name...

The thing I found intersting about that comment is the fact that Gemma was on the previous model cover. They were kind of calling her the next supermodel in that issue. I don;t think it will hurt her career though. She's Gemma Ward. :woot:

I still haven't found it at any stores yet either. I'll check back in a day or 2. Is the Gap selling it also or are they just displaying the cover?

but the logic isn't right here. so they call the cover girls super models although they are less known than Gemma? i'm not even a Gemma fan but i found this part extremely disturbing. and Who is Nian Fish exactly? :innocent:

Oh. I definitely did not like that comment  I thought it was a tad bit snide  I also disliked him saying 'one wonders what would happen to Jessica Stam had she not been discovered' (paraphrasing)

Obviously....she would be a student or working.
