A Wandering Eye: Vacant's New Venture

By Karin Nelson

Fashion Wire Daily New York March 24, 2003 - Writers and editors, let's be honest: how many times have you bitterly eyed the artwork in magazines, knowing full well you could have captured a more interesting image? Furthermore, how many times have you considered forsaking your Mac for that Minolta DiMage digital camera?

For you, there's "Editor's Choice," a photography exhibition in which writers and editors are invited to indulge their pixilated fantasies. Art photographer Chris Scott came up with the concept for the show, which will take place at "Vacant Eye," the image showcase division of the roving, one-month-only boutique Vacant.

Scott describes the exhibit as, "an exploration... a sort of migration from the written word to visual world," and sees it as a chance for writers and editors to seriously experiment with a medium they have -- until now -- only messed around with. Many, like the folks at Vibe magazine and The Fader, have already signed on to contribute.

Though Scott has begun accepting work for "Editor's Choice," he has not yet set a deadline, nor exhibit dates. He says the show will probably take place in New York, at an independent annex of Vacant.

The first "Vacant Eye" showcase of work from emerging artists will debut at the Vacant retail location in London in June. Word is, actor-cum-artist-and-poet Viggo Mortensen is being courted to curate that exhibit.
