Valentino S/S 2016 by Steve McCurry

Diversity wasn't the point I was getting at. Cultural appropriation was.

I do find it funny that white models need to be included to present a 'diverse' campaign... in Kenya... promoting a collection inspired completely by Africa... yet they're always included. Funny how that works.
My apologies. The meaning of your post was muddled and I seem to have misunderstood. :flower:

These really are pretty offensive and racially/culturally insensitive, but aside from that, they are visually beautiful. It's just a shame that Blackness and African people are used as props (and supporting cast members) in Fashion so often and that's the only "diversity" that we're given most of the time.

Just like the show, this campaign is equally beautiful and problematic. The pictures with the Maasai people as props are just SOOO unnecessary and silly. I'm actually really disappointed that someone like McCurry who has such a long experience in portraying races and cultures in a very respectful way would be behind this. The pictures like the one with the sand storm, however, are simply stunning. That's the way they should had gone with. It's intelligent, beautiful and non-cliche.

Visually this is by far the most beautiful campaign that I have seen in a long time... I just wish the casting was more diverse and I find that picture with the massai people in the background problematic.
Apart from that I still think that designers who take inspiration from other cultures and then present their clothes on models who aren't from those same cultures isn't quite the same as "white people dressing up as ..." (actually I think I'd find the opposite more problematic). But everyone's welcome to tell me that I am wrong.
Also that it is Valentino does not quite help....

The scenery and the Maasai are stealing the limelight. There is too much contrast between the perfect models/clothes and the rough background.

Can't see the pix, but I'm thrilled to see a new photographer! I guess I can stop my boycott now ...
