An overrated musical. I saw it years ago with the original Broadway cast, I wasn't impressed. I think one of the reasons its so romanticized is because Jonathan Larson, the playwright, died of a heart problem the day before it opened off Broadway.

Really? I heard the exact opposite. People said that at one point, she was doing a dramatic/sad scene and it was so bad the audience actually laughed.

The nicest review I've read so far (from Entertainment Weekly) was: "But while young Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical is clearly out of her dramatic depths as HIV-positive stripper/junkie Mimi — she lacks both the gravitas and the crazy to inhabit the role — she generally succeeds due to low expectations and a surprisingly well-controlled voice."
