From Fortune:

Don’t look for angel on the runway this winter.

L Brands has cancelled 2019’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, saying the decision was part of a move to “evolve the messaging of [the company]”. The move follows months of speculation and the lowest ratings ever for the show in 2018.

“We will be communicating to customers, but nothing similar in magnitude to the fashion show,” said CFO Stuart Burgdoerfer.

Burgdoerfer told analysts on an earnings call that the company was pulling back on more extravagant marketing methods. That came as the company acknowledged that sales at the Victoria’s Secret brand continue to decline. Sales fell 7% in the latest quarter, compared to a 2% drop during the same period a year ago.

With the exception of a small rise in the first quarter of 2018, Victoria’s Secret same store sales have declined every quarter since Q4 2016.

While the show was, at one time, a pop culture event, it has been losing viewers over the past few years. Burgdoerfer, while heralding the show as a “remarkable marketing achievement,” downplayed its financial impact of late, saying “as timing over the years shifted over the years in terms of the airing the fashion show, did we see specific material impact in terms of a short-term sales response to the airing of the fashion show? As a general matter, the answer to that question is no.”

NY Post:

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is a bust.

L Brands, which owns the storied lingerie company, announced the decision Thursday, saying it’ll be moving on in order to “evolve the messaging of [the company],” reports Fortune.

“We will be communicating to customers, but nothing similar in magnitude to the fashion show,” CFO Stuart Burgdoerfer said on an earnings call with analysts.

As The Post reported earlier this week, insiders have long predicted the demise of the show, particularly after catwalk staple Shanina Shaik leaked the news to the Daily Telegraph in July.

“Unfortunately the Victoria’s Secret show won’t be happening this year,” she said. “It’s something I’m not used to because every year around this time I’m training like an Angel.”

However, the company itself hadn’t confirmed Shaik’s comments until today. It comes after years of frustrations over what some call an outdated beauty standard — including former Angel Karlie Kloss, who quit the gig in the name of feminism.

The show, which has taken place annually around this time of year since 1995, used to be widely regarded for its cast of slender supermodels. Insiders told The Post that modeling in the show was once “the ultimate achievement.”

But lately, the show has lost its sheen, helped along by a cascade of controversy.
Last year, Ed Razek, VS’s former chief marketing officer, made offensive comments to Vogue.com, saying that there was “no room” for plus-size models on their runway and that he would not cast transgender models.

And this summer, it was discovered that Leslie Wexner, CEO of L Brands, was a close friend of disgraced pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein used Wexner’s link to Victoria’s Secret to recruit young women by promising them modeling jobs with the brand.

Ultimately, with the brand’s revenue declining quarter by quarter and changing societal ideas of what’s sexy, Victoria’s Secret has been in trouble for quite some time.

Burgdoerfer also chalked their decision up to finances. “Did we see specific material impact in terms of a short-term sales response to the airing of the fashion show? As a general matter, the answer to that question is no.”

The brand did not specify whether the cancellation is temporary, or the fashion show is gone for good.

I can't believe it took them this long to announce it. Needless to say, VS' outdated forms of marketing are catching up to them quite quickly. Them reacting to it over the past few months (primarily with model castings and sultry campaigns) may already be too late of a reaction to refuel the brand.

It's about time this stick figures in lingerie show was cancelled.
Thanks Rihanna! xo

What about all those models who used to go on and about how rewarding it is to do VS, how different it was, how they could be themselves?

It will also be interesting to see how the careers of some fo the VS girls will be kept alive now that there's no show to give it a boost. Maybe 'JoJa' and Shanina should invest all their time and effort into becoming full-fledged influencers. They sort of are already anyway.

Around five of the VS Angels did a BooHoo campaign. Yep, that’s right, BOOHOO. Needless to say, their wallets are dry.

As for the non-angels, apart from the ones who get HF related bookings, their careers aren’t the most... upbeat either. No more are models getting booked for pristine money-making jobs simply because of VS. We haven’t seen a career be formed (to some extent) by the brand since Grace Elizabeth, no?

It was about time...
And it’s not feminism that ruined their shows. It’s their outdated vision and show...
It was big but OMG so cheesy and giving the fact that the lingerie itself was ridiculous and unwearable, what was the point.

Even if Savage Fenty was a great thing, their sales are far from VS.

VS is still in the imagery synonymous with seduction and sexiness but it’s been a longtime since we have seen it from the brand.
They can bounce back...With a focus on the designs and a complete change of strategy! The casting first of all...You don’t need to have plus size models if you don’t want to buy maybe more curvy and athletic models.
It could be an opportunity to have your old Angels such as Heidi or Adriana as consultant...

And when you’re ready, you comeback with a real fashion show with women looking fierce and confident and not blowing kisses to the camera men...

If was working for LaPerla, I would totally run for it! They can manage to be more exclusive.

It has been known for months that the show was cancelled, but this is just another case of VS dying on the hill of doing things on their own terms.

The company created an iconic platform for its models to become stars and elevate the brand and then completely tanked itself once it started to rigorously appeal to the "youth." Too many poor marketing decisions. The brand needed a revamp many, many years ago.

I'd say the shift started once it became more focus on on quantity of angels (hello, 2010) over quality and creating stars with a smaller group of models.

^I'd say 2006 was the last good show. But yes, 2005 and 2006 were probably their best.

Good riddance. There's no true VS superstar left anyway.

I think they're trying to distract from the fact that Epstein was pretending to be an agent for VS to get to young girls and that many VS models spent time in Epstein's house.

Yikes, it seems everyone had ties to this guy! And the one woman who can clear it all up disappeared into thin air.

^VS founder Les Wexner was BFF with Epstein, God knows what they were doing together.
But yeah like it's been said already we already knew that the show was cancelled so why say it now?
