Virginie Viard - Designer, Creative Director of Chanel

It will be interesting to see if anything changes
Of course something will change. In terms of influence already something will change. Karl drew everything himself. His creative process is a lot more different compared to a lot of designers today.
What I wonder is if she will make a real, strong statement or be more subtle.

Virginie just initiated her ins account, looks like she is ready to step out

^^^ What I meant was, It will be interesting to see if there is any significant, perceptible change in the end results (i.e., the clothes).

No I totally got you! What she was involved with at this point was the very commercial pre-collections (Act1) or the sports stuff. It’s not really indicative of anything.

I expect to see some touches of Karl in some details but I hope that she will inject some of her rock sensibility.

It’s tricky with women designer because sometimes their fashion reflect their style like Phoebe or it’s the total opposite like MGC.

From US Vogue September 2020 - What is the future of fashion?

"My daily life and the life of the company
are paced by the various collections we
create each year, and while I’ve valued the
opportunity to work on these different creative
expressions, I am also glad to face a
moment where we do things differently. The
crisis was an opportunity for me to do smaller
collections and envisage more intimate
shows, which is something more in sync with
my sensibility. The Chanel shows with Karl
were magical, and they have contributed to
fashion history—I treasure the memory of
every moment. However, I would not have felt
comfortable in such settings, with my name in
big letters up there. My approach to work has
always been rather simple and pragmatic, but
more than ever, I feel my designs must resonate
with realness—and even though I know it will
be different, I am confident it will still be good."

Welp!

She has told us who she is and what we will be getting from this point forward. We should believe her.

I actually think this could possibly be for the best. I don't have super high hopes, but I think scaling down, making everything smaller and more intimate might take some weight off her shoulders and allow her to loosen up a bit? I always felt like the biggest issue with her Chanel so far was Karl's looming legacy. I doubt the spectre of his legacy is going anywhere anytime soon, but doing away with the enormous, shock-value shows might go a long way in giving Virginie some room to breathe.

I'm not expecting a miracle, but I think her clothes will look much fresher in a more intimate setting.

This is particularly the case with Virginie living in the shadow of Karl’s legacy forever if she is not going turn a new page of history in Chanel. Her approach to the brand is just so wrong (she said it and we all know it now). Maybe the best way for her is to release Karl’s archives every season so we could appreciate Karl’s design more in retrospect.

Off-topic, even MGC’s Dior has more impact on the public all over the world than her mediocre design in Chanel, in a sense of cultural influence and fashion trends.

What a beautiful and elegant way to say "Sorry, but I'm incompetent"
Again, miss corona may kill many everywhere, but it surely saved her career.

I think scalling down for her should mean less looks. Karl drew but judging by the look of her collections, she seems to be a « mood board » type of designer.

She should maybe approach Chanel as a stylist rather than a designer.

She does great bags (the cage clutch) but I’m not a luxury YouTuber or a bag girl. Her Chanel does not speak to me... Which is interesting because she is an active woman designing for active women and we all know the fantasy of the industry with women designing for women...

I really do love Virginie. I think this is a new era at Chanel and I love the freshness of her clothes and how they appeal to all demographics. She is redefining what Chanel is in my opinion. Finally we don’t have anyone problematic at the head of Chanel and she caters to everyone.

You’re quite delusional to assume Virginie doesn’t come with her own bag of problems simply because she is a female “designer”...
