Vogue Italia June 2011 : Candice Huffine, Tara-Lynn & Robyn Lawley by Steven Meisel

I don't see this cover as stereotypical.

When people see the food on this cover as a stereotypical element it's because they associate plus size models with eating and so they (and not the editor) are guilty of putting plus size women in a stereotypical context , and that's not the point of this cover.
Possibly. But it's hard not to see it as stereotype when vogue.it even has sections on its websites called "Vogue Black" and "Vogue Curvy". I just don't see why these 'minorities' can't be integrated into a normal issue without being treated like some sort of anomaly that need their own categories. But maybe that's just me. It would just seem a lot more credible to me if VI featured them regularly, but maybe they will start doing that from now on (which I don't quite believe).

^^I'm not being pedantic, it was a serious question. And I don't consider swimwear equally sexual as lingerie at all.
Basically then, you agree that is it an individual perspective as to whether one thing is more or less sexual than another?

Can we ALL agree then that this is the case and put that particular argument to bed and get back to looking at pretty ladies?

The girls look beautiful and honestly I did notice they were plus-sized models until I googled their names because I did not recognize any of them!

A beautiful cover overall but, and I'm probably in the minority here, I prefer the Vogue Italia covers with the "freaky" models and the models that Meisel catapulted into stardom. What happened? Vogue Italia / Steven Meisel used to be "star-makers", now it seems like he is more of a follower than a leader.

^Putting virtually unknows (in terms of high fashion modelling) on the cover of VI does not strike me as the thing a 'follower' would do. VI may not be a 'leader' by putting out this cover but it's certainly a bold and daring choice.

You know, I've just read through this and I hadn't even noticed the plates with food on them  and why the hell should I, when there are stunning women looking glamorous and provocative and who really cares anyway.:D

Oh god, the token "big" girl issue? Give me a break.
Over the years, VI has become a parody of itself with all of its 'token' issues.

Next!

It's not just you.

I think they should have done a regular editorial, without using the models' differences as a token theme ('real beauty', the food...). Wouldn't it have been more daring to not bring focus to their size, and run it as a normal VI editorial?

Re: VI's website... I was wondering why there were no back models on their main New Faces page... until I saw they had a separate black New Face "section". I found that strange. At least include them on both pages.

It's nice to see Meisel do something with plus-size girls...even though I had no clue who they were at first. However the theme of this cover and (what appears so far to be) the editorial does look like something Crystal Renn could have theoretically shot back in 2005 for VP. June is a horrible month for mags so let's see how this pans out.

well put! i agree that there is an underlying theme of segregation. though it is still, by definition, a spotlight; there is no intergration or regularity of these models after the issue has soaked up the limelight. very true statement & great contemplative contibution to the thread. :flower:

I was so clueless when I first read the thread title and even before opening it. I honestly didn't have any idea on how they look like. But after opening it and seeing the cover, I was amazed with how stunning it is. It's simply beautiful. Though I didn't know that they're plus-sized models until I browsed through this thread reading all of the comments. :D The presence of 90s vibe is really evident. Like it was from the early 90s to be exact. So looking forward to the main editorial 'cause I think it'll be even more amazing.

Amen.

But from now on I will get very suspicious everytime I see a thin model photographed without any food.

Looks like their January 2011 cover

Totally agree. All I'm seeing are three beautiful ladies in a sensual, captivating shot and I actually don't happen to care if they're wearing lingerie in a restaurant. For some strange reason you don't hear anything when a model is wearing couture gown in a subway station in the couture spreads.

The cover is absolutely gorgeous, I'm really amazed. I was just about to lose any hope for VI et voilà, the glamour is here.

And woah, I can't believe I'm saying it, but does Alexa Chung look good or what? Leave it to Ellen, she's just the one to do it.

Kudos to Meisel and Sozzani for the "statement" that the cover is making.

The models are freaking gorgeous!

Meisel's ed of another plus size model Toccara Jones was also heavy on the lingerie and many plus size eds resort to sex bomb mode, so he gets a ding from me for being cliched.

The spread legs in lingerie with thigh high stockings does stray into "too much" and tacky territory, but it does not define the cover for me.

What does Belle Verre mean?

I get the message Meisel wants to tell by this cover and I like it!

I love it, such a 90s vibe! So excited for Robyn, I've been following her career and she is beyond stunning and talented.

from thinking this was just okay i change my mind i :heart: this, can't wait to see it in HQ and their ed. who is the model in the middle? she has all my attention

I don't like the cover. I don't even think they're plus-sized but I do find the models beautiful, though. The layout is something that irks me, I mean, why should they leave white spaces on the upper & lower part? I would pass-by through it in a newsstand, it doesn't stand-out that much.

Belle Verre means Beautiful Glass ....in french

Belle Vere (what it actually says) means True Beauty....in italian

Models (Left-right) are Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley. Marquita Pring is rumoured to be in the editorial as well. All girls have tFS pages.
