Vogue Italia May 2022 : Joan Smalls by Cho Gi-Seok

Am I expecting Italian Vogue to go back to where it was? No.
I think this is satisfactory, but not exceptional.
* I wish Edward will give her a solo British Vogue cover. To piss the haters a lot more.

You don't have to be a fan of Joan to understand her value..i sense in a lot of comments a bit of discrimination but i hope it's only my perception...

Like all careers,of course agents and management play an important part as long with the model's talent and professionalism. This happens to all kind of talents...but in the end she still manage to be around. I personally wouldn't call her an icon but sure a top model with a body of work that proves that. yes she is not that versatile but that doesn't diminishes her quality as a top model.

To reach the supermodel status she have to be known outside the bubble of the fashion world, so I'm not sure if this is the case. That also can apply to a lot of other models that they are darlings of designers and creatives but the common people have no idea of their names.

In the end this is a forum,so anyone can think whatever they want.

Joan is always a delight, she's one of the strongest models and personality in the industry. Look at her Vogue Japan covers in the past! Stunning. I own only a Vogue magazine with her on the cover (it should be two, but the pandemic again...), and it's one of my favorite magazines in my collection. Look at her, she truly delivers like a super, because she IS a supermodel.

My snap

I don’t mind having Joan back on the covers and editorials of Vogue what I do mind is the art direction (???) behind this shoot.
the styling and layout on the cover is horrendous. JAIL!
and those daisies on the cover bother me immensely and it all has a cheap indie magazine vibe like @Kimy Jo so well pointed out.

agree with @KINGofVERSAILLES that the shot with the veil would’ve been a beautiful cover.

I love this photographers work, but this shoot is probably the worst thing I’ve seen from him but he sets the bar high so his worst is still quite decent.

I love Joan too but something feels mismatched. She’s lacking softness. I think Adut would have been a better fit!

Joan has never really been strong in print which I find odd considering that she has the look, confidence and body. The only time I've loked her work was in her Estee Lauder ads and on the runway and when she does less edgy editorial work. She always looks best in classical beauty and sexy work than edgy where she looks forced. I feel like she's a classical beauty that they always try to make too edgy.

Flicking through this online, it's 200 pgs, and this issue seems to have a theme of flowers, femininity and (in)fertility. At the front of the issue, there's a reprint of the US Vogue edit with one of Steve Jobs' daughters... I see her name is Eve Jobs, Steve-eve, it should be easy to remember. There's a notable series of Lancome ads for their new lipstick range, using many of their faces, from Penelope to Zendaya to Isabella R. The Florence W piece is reprinted.

The Joan Smalls story also features an interview with her. Then it's the Annie Leibovitz families piece, there's a fashion edit 'In Fiore' by Giovanni Corabi, this might be new? Then the Lara Stone reprint edit from current US Vogue, followed by the shopping mall edit from current UK Vogue, and that's it.

For a magazine that seems to have slightly more pages this month than others, it strangely feels like it has less content.

Of all the Euro Vogues I've looked at this month, I like this one the least, because the whole issue feels like it badly wants to make a statement, but is too afraid to go further than dipping one toe in the waters of bad taste, so it ends up confining itself to staying on the commercial straight-and-narrow while trying to lurch towards gaudiness, but without any authenticity or real thought. Not a fan.

It is a Joan thread or a VI thread? Jesus…
Does anyone have a review of the issue?

Correct. Not a fan of his Vogue Korea cover shoot last year as well. Everything was just blurry.
