What makes a good fashion stylist?

I'm a photographer and meeting up with some people who want to work with me as fashion stylists. Some have no experience. But obviously everyone needs to start somewhere so that doesnt bother me too much.

My question is to TFS, what do you look for in a good fashion stylist?

What do you expect from them?
How do you choose?

Hmm, I'm no expert, and have no experience in choosing a stylist or working as one, but I think a few qualities of a good stylist are a certain disregard for any "rules" when it comes to fashion and style, a sense of experimentation, and definitly a vivid imagination. I think good stylists just have that x-factor, like it just comes so naturally to them, there's no effort in their work, it's almost instinctual.

what you need to do is figure out if you guys like the same thing and want to do the same kind of pics...

so ask them who their fave designers are...
who their fave photogs are...
who their fave models are...that sort of thing...
to see if you are on the same page...

a good stylist is basically very organized, works hard and has strong story ideas....
that's all...

I would think a good stylist would have a good sense of style as well. Lot's of stylists are b.s. show offs in my experience. Trust your instincts to know who the true talents are. My instincts tell me Softgrey is a true talent, by the way.

in my book (and i've worked as a stylist for few years) a good stylist has a style all of her/his own, they are adventurous, cretive and original, they have an 'eye' for fresh trends and they are not 'stuck' in one particular look

but it only LOOKS as if there is no effort....

everything is VERY well thought out usually...
