What to pack for a trip or extended stay

I depends on where in Germany you are staying. If you're going to Bavaria, better prepare for some tough cold nights! - 20°C can happen, at night even less !(though most of the time in the south you have about -5 to -15 °C at day, in the north 5 to -10°C) If you're staying in the north you might manage with a dress and tights, but buy some thick wool tights! Do you have a decent winter coat and nice winter boots? You will definately need something with thick soles.
Layering is a great option so you don't have to buy too many pieces you can't use back at home.

this thread is great!:P
i just bought an ankle boots for the upcoming trip to riga, latvia. it's tricky cause i go there in april, and it's not gonna be warm, but not very cold either. my perfect winter walking boots won't suit the weather, and my "dressy" but still casual ankle boots are not made for travel. i do want some good looking shoes to walk around in, so these boots come in handy, a bit rugged, seems comfy&sturdy, but still polished enough to stroll around the city.
and i gonna travel around asia for 2 month in summer. en, that's tricky again:blink: so far i have a list of essentials, like walking sandals, shorts, t-shirts and dresses. i'm still thinking if i should get a light backpack, something canvas, not too rugged, but easy to carry around. i'll see how that list go.
however i've learned a lot from my previous travel experiences, like last summer spent one month on the road in west coast, u.s. i brought only one tiny carry-on suitcase with minimum amount of clothes in, and that works! it's perfect! i've never been happier with my belongings!:Pso basically most of my purchases nowadays are based on the criteria "if i can travel with this" and that helps enormously with my shopping and mapping out my personal style. cause anything i'm willing to travel with, i would also love to wear in everyday life B)

chel4mdavali: well, a pair of ankle boots will def comes handy, cause it's probably not gonna be very warm in denmark in may. if i were you, i would bring one small suitcase with rollers and one (probably black) handbag as hand luggage. some light knits to keep warm, a good parka and some dresses (cause they are easy to wear). and a pair of slim pants that looks sleek in the city.

^thanks! do you live in the city? i've never been to europe at all so im out of the loop :/
anybody else have any suggestions????

When I'm travelling, I prefer to wear sweatpants.

WHAAAAAT????

I mean, I know you are not alone .. when you travel especially domestic in the US all the girls in the world are wearing velour tracksuits and such to fly around.

And when I see this I miss the old days when people dressed up to travel.

Since this one time I was gonna get bumped to first class (but they wouldnt because of how I dressed) I ALWAYS dress smart with traveling .. and I wear jeans (with a nice jacket and maybe a cashmere sweater? vneck? or just a nice pullover). Oh .. that one time they allowed me to change and spend the flight asleep after eating and two whiskies . Yay!

chel4mdavali: yes, i live in a small city but i'm quite oriented with european urban style:smile: i think generally speaking, in european cities, we tend to dress a bit more sleek and even tailored. not sporty. clothes tend to have a bit "shape". that's why i'm suggesting a slim pants, instead of something baggy. and a tailored jacket will always comes in handy to dress things up a bit. but don't worry, you can dress perfectly comfy by wearing cute flats or ankle boots to walk around. and under a somewhat tailored outwear, you can always wear your favorite slouchy tee (just a guess). in denmark i assume people dress in lots of muted colors, in spring time pastel colors, but nothing too bright or saturated. and a black tote or messenger will be very versatile when you travel, cause it goes with everything.

^thank you so much for the help! it's hard to keep things minimal as I want to take everything "just in case" horrible... LOL

Where did that come from?

That is pretty far from the truth, I'll say :D

hey guys, im taking a 10 day vacation in May in Denmark and taking the train to Malmoe, Sweden for a couple of those days. I have never been outside of the US before and have no clue what to pack, how to pack, or what luggage to even use! help! im clueless :/!

South of Sweden has had a very rough winter this year but rumors has it that its going to be a hell of a hot summer, hotter than it usually is! Copenhagen and Malmo's trends are very normal to other cities in america, tbh. The only thing is for shoes, if you're planning on going shopping (although it is considerably more expensive than it is at home), their gogatans call for comftarable shoes as the streets are uneven and often pebble.

from general Scandinavian style publications, such as interior magazines, and lots of street pics. and also some Scandinavian brands that we have here, such as noa noa. we thought the design and color palette very danish. but i very likely might be wrong, cause i haven't been to Scandinavia yet.

i actually don't think i said things very specific, just some general, rough ideas. lots of muted colors, not too bright...are those really that wrong?

so what is the truth? i would like to know

No one here wears Noa Noa. EVER. It's insanely dowdy. We don't buy a lot of our own brands, we mostly buy the Swedish brands. And of course nothing looks like it does in the magazines, it gives a quite distorted image of Scandinavia. They are selling an idea of Scandinavia, not the real thing.

I see no muted colours. Maybe if people are wearing prints the colours will be slightly muted, otherwise no, very rarely. Pastels I have never seen anyone wear. And I rarely see anyone in heels, stupid cobbled streets  plus we all ride our bikes anyway, so heels are rather impractical. People are very dressed down (not to the point of sweat pants though), Swedes are a bit more dressed up in general.

Thats the name for those stupid shoe-stealing streets! ughh. When I go to sweden, everyone thats under 20 looks like a H&M catalog with converses on. Converse is very big in sweden.

no one ever wear noa noa, well, sounds reasonable. ha, cause i too think it looks rather dowdy. but it's quite popular here in holland, which is not that far from denmark.
but seriously, how can you see no muted colors at all and never see anyone wear pastels? muted colors are just any primary and secondary colors that have been toned down...it's so general and broad. never see such color in your surroundings ever? so you mean danish people you see only wear intense or bright colors? and pastels are such big trends recently, even though i personally don't like it that much. but there must be some people on the street(no matter how few) wear it, right? well, i assume you exaggerate a bit to make a point, otherwise i find it hard to believe ^-^

Funny, when I was in Copenhagen I found the Danish to be dressed up. Or al least, showing some though in what they wear.
But maybe that's just because the Dutch are even less dressed up..

Pastels haven't caught on up here. At all...I don't think it suits pale people, and apparently the pale inhabitants of Denmark agrees

But then everything is a muted colour by your definition, which then includes pretty much every colour out there. People wear jeans, black, white and...colours. Mostly if people are wearing something muted it might be a jacket or something. And mostly grey. But sandy beiges and muted army greens and brown and all that? Not really. It might be because of spring, it might be because those colours just don't suit pale people, but it's not something I've seen for a while. Esp not outfits in all-muted colours.

I actually thought that Dutch people dressed a bit more up? We're just a bunch of slobs all of us :D

I'm going interrailing this August and I have no idea what to pack except for underwear, a bikini, band aids and SPF  I'm off to central and southern Europe, I've never been to any of the countries in that region so I'm quite excited!

I've been interrailing last summer, so much fun ^_^!

Just bring some comfortable/solid footweat in case you have to run for a train. I remember a incident in Nimes where I had to run to the end of the platform to catch my train. I was glad I had some decent footwear because if I was wearing rubber flipflops I wouldn't have made it .

just got back from paris.
on the plane i wore: 1 shirt, 1 wool shawl, 1 trench, and a pair of jeans, with converse.
in my bag i brought: 1 shirt, 1 light-weight blazer, 1 pair of pants, and desert boots.

it was a 6 day trip.

Travelling to Vegas and LA

Hi I am travelling to Vegas and LA for the first time next week and I was just wondering if anyone can help me with a quick idea of what I should be packing to wear there. I am in Michigan so pretty wrapped up for the cold right now and I just don't want to look like a typical tourist. Any help for essential packing ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks :D

Okay LA its pretty cold but apparently its more tolerable than michigan. Bring pants, skirts with stockings (if you're a girl), long-sleeved shirts, boots (it rains), thin and thick jackets, sweaters, socks, etc. It's not that warm. It's pretty windy too. And no one cares too much what you wear when it's this cold.

Las Vegas I have absolutely no idea... you can always go to weather forecast websites to see what the weather will be like.
