What to wear on a date

Yeah, the dress seemed great when it was just dinner, but then he threw in meeting for a drink beforehand at a much more casual place.

I'm thinking a more casual dress that I have with a swirling, Hawaiin-esque print in corals and purples, with a pair of casual coral sandals with a small wooden heel, and a straw clutch.

Dating is complicated!

It just depends on the type of date... If I were about to go out on a date with someone I genuinely am interested in, I´d wear whenever I feel like wearing, not worrying about being risky if I feel like wearing certain item of clothing without caring about whether it´s a weird looking item or not. After all, I´d want him to know (and hopefully fall for) the real me.

On the other hand, if this date is with someone I am sexually attracted to but without whom I could happily keep on living then I´d wear something rather tight on the right areas but not too tight or openly sexy. I might be open to sex that night but I wouldnt want to look like a cheap sl*t, would I:wink:?

HAHA

I would definitely wear my favourite Wildfox 'I love boys' sweatshirt on a first date!
You know.. just in case he doesn't get the message!

that's one way to send the message without dressing overtly sexy

could you provide the source of that image please so that it won't have to deleted per tfs community rules? thanks! :flower:

I don't think I've been on an official date... I'd have to consult the parties involved, and doubtless they don't want to be consulted... On my last not-a-date (a zillion years ago), I wore some can't-be-bothered baggy shorts and a thrift store tee. Just do the opposite of what I did, and you should be fine.

Just wanted to note that I believe this is her own picture ... a picture of herself, also posted in the Personal style thread.

So my ex boyfriend called. :flower: We ended on really good terms, but haven't spoken for awhile. I've been thinking about him ALOT lately, and what do you know, he calls me!

We're having dinner tomorrow night (Chinese), and then heading over to his friends house. So not only do I get to see him after a long while, but I will be meeting new people.

It's to cold for a skirt or dress, but all of a sudden my sweaters seem to frumpy. I have a ton of girly, subtly sexy tank tops and camisoles, but they seem too bare. Blah. I have nothing to wear.

Any idea's? Post pictures, and maybe I can recreate something....?

If you want to wear dress/skirt just layer your tights...you can wear up to like 5 layers :D It actually warmer than pants. many thin layers > a thick layer

I'm going on a date on Valentine's day and I can't decide what to wear! It will be my first official date with my boyfriend - somehow we never went on one, even though we've been together for 6 months, terrible, I know! :D
I have NO idea what to wear. I have a sleeveless red peplum dress which he loves, but I want something new, something I can surprise him with... I'm thinking maybe a black leather skirt and a sheer white blouse if the ones I ordered come in on time? We're going for dinner. I already have the shoes picked out, they'll be my heeled Chelsea ankle boots. But I'm seriously lost on the rest of the outfit, as well as the styling... How should I wear my hair/makeup/nails? Please help me out, guys! :flower: If you have any suggestions from ASOS or some other site that delivers to Europe, please feel free to link them. Also I can get things from H&M, Topshop, Mango, Zara... I want to look perfect this one time for him :heart:

^ a couple weeks seems like plenty for your purchases to arrive ... what about a pink bra/bustier/camisole underneath, pink lipstick, and maybe various pink polishes on your nails, if you like that look?

fashionista-ta What would I do without you? You always come to the rescue with the perfect advice. :flower:
I love that idea. I also have the perfect hot pink clutch to add to the outfit. And I have a really bright pink lipstick as well as the perfect nail polish! I think I'd rather go with a gorgeous black bralette that I have just so it's not too matchy matchy.
Oh my god, I'm so excited now! Thank you so much!

^ sounds like a plan & you're welcome :flower: i agree you don't want too much of the pink, so adding a piece & subtracting a piece should be perfect.

Skirting around the Issue

Two weeks ago I went on a date with a lawyer at Goldman Sachs. He was 49-years old, “not handsome in the classical sense, more Jimmy Cagney than Cary Grant” as he so charitably described himself and preferred Italian suits over Savile Row’s. His magniloquent and crassly funny e-mails had made me curious, so I’d accepted his invitation to have dinner at Bond Street. The conversation was a little awkward at the beginning, as would be expected when you meet a perfect stranger, but after three cocktails we found common ground and got chatty. From politics – we discussed the icky subject of racism in Belgium – we jumped to traveling – I asked him twice where he grew up (eek!) – to our professional lives – I now know how to bail out an entire country.
I also told Mr. Lawyer that I had great trouble getting dressed for our date. This might surprise you but it’s really quite simple an equation. You see, I’m not used to dressing for straight men. I work in fashion for pete’s sake. Everyone’s either gay or a woman! And the rare straight man who does loiter around in the colorful corridors of the fashion industry chases models for sport. So I dress for myself and for other girls. It’s become somewhat of a job these days and the majority of thought goes into whether the outfit is inspiring, unique and well, Me. I never really have to think about any romantically enticing hem- or neckline, because I’m either in front of a gay street style photographer or a seasoned fashion maven at an office. So when the odd date does come around I am left helpless and desperate to please. Everything and anything I put on is either too sexy or too fashionable. I constantly have to remind myself that men are simple creatures, including Mr. Lawyer, who told me “there’s no ambiguity, just black and white.”
And so he found no better way to say it then to just be brutally honest: “You should have worn a skirt!” This wasn’t meant as a joke. He was quite sure of this and continued to complain about my lack of skin until we left the restaurant. Mind you, I was wearing a tiny Peter Pilotto shirt that bared my arms and shoulders quite generously, and really, isn’t that the only thing you can see when you’re across from someone at a table? “I would have dropped my napkin a few times to get a peek!” he retorted. OK, this was a joke, but I had to defend myself nonetheless. For one, it was freezing outside. I wasn’t going to dart around in a summer dress, or dig up my tights again either. Secondly, I didn’t want to come across as some ditzy fashionista – the bastard googled me – who’s got nothing but a body as ammunition. (Though I don’t have any t*ts, nor *** to speak of…) Thirdly, didn’t he already see my legs on-line? “Yes, they are very nice!” he said. “I even told my friend, she’s got nice gams.” So why make such a big deal out of it?
It got me thinking, what is the appropriate attire for a first date? Was I wrong to wear pants? Was I wrong to assume I would come off as sl*tty or too eager if I wore a short skirt? According to Mr. Lawyer it’s the only way to tell if the guy is a “James Bond”. If he can keep his cool while you’re sitting there flaunting your goods, he’s a real man. Plus, he assured me that “9 out of 10, no, 99 percent of men would say they prefer a skirt over pants.” So I did a little survey this weekend. I put on the outfit again, stopped a few guys around the West Village and asked them if it was suitable for a first date. Or if they would have preferred to see a skirt instead. And the answers were all in my favor, though mildly. Some didn’t understand the top because of the ruffle – it’s too fashion, I admit it. But what it all came down to was that none of them said they preferred a skirt. According to the preppy guy, “jeans is the uniform” so I hit the nail right on the head. So what’s up with Mr. Lawyer, really?
