why do you like/ hate marc jacobs?

My opinion

I bought some Marc Jacobs items about 4 years ago and liked him then. At the time he was doing more silk tops with delicate art deco prints. I know from time to time he does 1920's looking couture dresses, but I prefer to buy original 1920's dresses for 1/8th the cost! Also, I have a top that has a whimsicle print of a unicorn, princess, and knight in light pastel colors. It reminds me of bed sheets or fabric from the early 80's, my child hood. He definately is good with nostalgia. Sometimes he does 1940's inspired shoes, which I find cute. I appreciate any designers that bring back old looks from eras I was not able to experience, but would have loved to!

I soooo wanted these shoes, but the color in person is not red, it is orange. Orange patent leather just doesn't wet my whistle, and so I find small problems like this in every piece he puts out.

Since then, I have bought nothing Marc Jacobs. His inspiration clearly comes from ~70's salvation army clothes. When I was a teen and wanted to be different, I shopped the salvation army so I see his inspiration. His colors are always slightly off, dirty and dingy. Sometimes the cuts of his tops have really high colars, like the 70's victorian revival. Often his fabrics are to heavy or stiff. His shoes come in colors like "lobster", in other words, puke orange/red. Tops come in oranges, off teals, dusty blues or are too big a mix for colors, which gets hard to coordinate. Shoes come in red+blue, which makes me think of red lipstick and blue eyeshadow, a big no no. The heels on alot of his shoes are really clunky. I prefer something more deliate.

This top definately shows me all that is weird/grose in Marc Jacobs...(orange, see through, clay colored velvet). ... I do commend him though for being different, as well as the people who are brave enough to wear something like this.

I think his designs are nice for LV. It is like a high end 70's stewardess look. It is clean and chic, but definately more retro into an era I am not that connected with.

I guess all in all he has gotten a little to "whimsicle" for my taste.

Some more random comments on Marc Jacobs clothes

I just don't understand why I need to put a cute camisole over a polo shirt. That just ruins it for me.

Lets save the sailor top for the 4 year olds.

The american flag ala Marc Jacobs... see, red/blue paired with dusty dirty teal. Gah. These colors make me puke.

More weird pairing of colors. I can see this dress worn in the movie "Virgin Suicides", but that took place in the 70's. I like the cut and that it is a sun dress, but I think grandma had a mumu made of this fabric.

Bag lady fashion. Built in bag/pockets to cary all your empty coke cans, fairy dust, or lord knows what else!

This fabric print reminds me of new carpet at movie theathers that tries to look art deco.

I think that looks cool...

 Yes it does!

i DONT like Marc Jacobs because he designs for LV>

heck, he stole my place !

I like Marc Jacobs and he is my favorite designer. He is unique and he is doing his own stuff. The MJ collection is not designed for everybody, which makes him a true artist.
I found that the fall 2005 collection amazing when I tried things on in the trunk show. I was amazed by how much he played with details as much as he did with the material and the colors. It's an inspiring and rich collection to me. Oh well, they are really expensive, but I think that certain pieces, such as jackets and dresses are worth the price.

i love him for certain pieces. his overall look is quirky, but i love the looks that are different and wearable. such as......

anyone know where to get it?? i cant find it anywhere

I don't like the way how he treats "fashion". I just couldn't imagine him for Gucci.

I agree I think that some of Marc Jacobs designs are kind of quaint but the quirkiness in his design gives his clothing personality. Therefore, it sets his line apart from other European lines. I love Jacobs approach to fashion and the informality that it introduces to glamour. I personally have not worn the clothing because as it was mentioned before Marc is not for everyone. But that gives me all the more reason to admire the line more as art.

I think he's a genius, but like every designer I like..they sometimes design things I hate...and he has done that

not worth the price!

I like marc jacobs clothing, but can you say over priced?? I mean the quality is good, but not great, but don't get me started on the bags and shoes! Sure, if its on sale and very cute, I'll buy it, but the shoes are WAY to pricey. I'd just rather splurge on Chloe or Delman flats because at least they have more quality. Also, many of the bags are ugly in my opinion.

The shoes are definitely in the best quality. Agree that the clothing is "over priced", but it is a commercial world and apparently there are plenty of people who would like to pay that price.
Some of the onsale collection pieces are definitely steals :)

I like a few of his clothes and yesterday I saw some really nice flats, but he's not my favourite.

The thing with Marc Jacobs is i wore mini versions of his clothes when i was a kid in the 70's. Anyone who is british, bought up in a middle class family in the 1970's will recognize that a lot of his daywear looks like it was inspired by a clothes brand around at the time called clothkits. It was a catalogue that your mum ordered from and the clothes arrived in cut out sheets - then she had to make them! It was a little bit hippy, all the colours were exactly the same orangey/browney/purple pallets that he usesin the MJ line. Even some of the patterns and detail remind me of MJ - I swear he has got hold of a load of these old catalogues at some point and uses them for inspiration!

oh yeah - and he only designs for waifs anyway!( not that he is the only designer to do this) That doesnt endear him to me - I can practically only fit an arm in some of his "large" sizes and im not huge by any means! If you have anything over an a-cup chest then forget it.

i'd have to disagree with your last point. i find his clothing absolutely huge compared to most designer lines. I can fit into a 4 or 6 in his stuff, whereas i'm easily a 6 or even sometimes an 8 in European designs.

Hmm well it is just personal experience, but i do have an e - cup chest so that may be it!

if you shopped a lot of American brands, you will find that American brands are a lot bigger than European counterparts. I'm a size 2 in European sizes but I could hardly find my clothes nowadays in inexpensive American clothing stores! (ask express or banana republic how much size they go up for in the past two years)Only the designer brands make some slimmer clothes, and of course, I have to pay more

Personally, I like Marc's colors. I have somewhat unusual coloring and don't look good in what some would call "true" colors. I love his coral, teal, brown, etc. I also loved that blue/red/ivory Deco print.

Caffeine, I'm so jealous that you were in a city with a trunk show! Did you by chance try on the tweed skirt with allover velvet ribbon detail? Or any similar skirts?

The great thing about Marc is you don't need to put that cami over the polo if you don't want to ... they're called separates for a reason :p Same thing if you don't have Sofia's bustline (as I don't either) ... just buy the bottom half. The best way to ensure you never, ever see yourself coming or going (and that you're expressing yourself rather than someone else) is to buy separates from different lines.

Prettyjuice, have you tried calling his stores for the flag dress?

Have to admit, I don't like his bags either. I like a sleeker line, so all the bulging and pockets don't really do it for me. But lots of people love them so clearly he's got his finger on somebody's pulse.

I have not tried that skirt yet. Do you have a picture? I can go to the store and take a look for you. Is that from the Marc line or the collection? I am quite familiar with their sizing though. Basically the size 2 in the Marc line is a little big on me so they fall on my hips but the size 0 in the collection is perfect on my waist. (My waist is very small...about 24 or less I guess) The Marc line is the same as other American brands' sizes (say, express), but the collection's sizing is more like the European counterpart.
wiht regard to teh bags, I have a sophia in magenta. I think that the magenta is even more beautiful than the Balenciaga magenta and very buttery. The people who like to put different things in different compartment tend to like Marc Jacobs' bags more, I think, because they function very well.
