why do you like/ hate marc jacobs?

MJ is the biggest flamer alive, seriously he doesn't think men into fashion are sexy. WTF your a freaking fashion designer. Who doesn't think that their ownself is sexy. I'm not gonna talk about Marc's sexiness because I don't swing that way. And I really think all men are into fashion, just some not as much as others. I'm throwing him in the "Just Making Money Pile" with Wal-Mart

Who cares if he's a designer just to make money? When I am scrutinizing a Marc Jacobs piece, I don't let his incentive for designing it influence my perspective on his clothing. I adore his easygoing yet sophisticated style, and I judge his clothing on his clothing, and his clothing alone.

I like Marc Jacobs because even though his close are becoming increasingly popular, he's still one of the more affordable popular designers. His clothes are well made and everytime I've worn one of his pieces, even a simple white shirt, someone asks me where I got it. His clothes are funky, yet can be worn years later.
However, I dislike most of his accessories and some designs because some can be predictible and it seems as though he's taking the easy way out.

You're right, MJ can make the simplest piece of clothing look like it fell from heaven... okay maybe not that great, but still great.

ehh, i dont hate him..i'm just not too fond of his style. especially for LV, blah.:yuk:

it's gap for grown-ups. good to wear when painting the house, washing the car, grocery shopping, going on a date with someone not too special. perfect for suburban lifestyles.

perfect for suburban lifestyles.

Yes, it is. But I think, depending on who you are and what kind of clothes you normally wear, you can make it look more sophisticated than you descrbied.

I don't like him, because he...

a.) is way overrated, and gets too much publicity for his collections.

b.) can design lovely shoes, but nothing else.

c.) designs clothes that look good only when Sofia Coppola wears them.

d.) designs for Louis Vuitton, and I hate that brand to death.

besides his shoes there's only one thing I really like; his ads by Juergen Teller!

don't forget that the genius also uses terry richardson to shoot his ads. terry is a very difficult photographer to retain, as he is usually busy shooting very important editorials for vice magazine.

Marc Jacobs is a designer that one can easily have a Love/Hate relationship with. I feel the main reason is how main stream he has become so quickly. This is an industry where we try to find what's going to be the NEXT big thing and try to rock the hot new fashions before anyone else does. A lot of times people gravitate to things that are just different and that will separate us from the norm. That is something that is made easy with a designer like Marc Jacobs who became popular for his quirk and vintage thrifty designs. Once everyone else starts to appreciate a designer, his designs become not so "original" because then he automatically becomes imitated. His clothes have become so basic to me now because companies like Free People inc. make so many clothes for their stores that look exactly like his stuff. Why pay the money for a Marc Jacobs summer dress if a plain Jane is going to have a dress that not only looks like your MJ design, but also cost half the price?

I still think he designs great shoes though

if marc is grown up gap, surely prada is grown up banana republic. in london mj is overpriced and doesn't sell well. i only ever pick it up heavily discounted- so i'm not a particular fan but occasionally some decent cashmere pops up. but iu agree that his clothes are just blah....

prada is entry-level designer clothing. wearing prada is like carrying a montblanc pen - a sign of a recent college graduate or that you finally decided to stop wearing short pants.

marc jacobs is a chamelon. call it shallow..he represents not just those who dress in GAP, but most people...i terms of their philosophy on dress. in a way it's very smart..who's to say at the core, is so dissimilar from rei kawakubo? she bases her brand on inconsistency and being a lightening rod of the times...she depends on culture to then break the rules. he is just..not as avant garde. who is more successful at the end? it's a toss up of what you'd rather have...public recognition..or cult obsurity? they both act as filters--they both represent the now.

I have a MJ jacket that is terrible quality. Bad fabric, the lining ripped and is continuing to rip, the zippers are sh*t, etc....

I like Philip Gentleman's last post about Prada.

I never quite understood the hype about Marc Jacobs either.

While I don't have a strong dislike for him, I am simply baffled as to why certain fashion journalists make him out to be some sort of creative genuis.

My favorite designer of all time is probably Gianni Versace, and most recently Tom Ford (I am still sad he left Gucci!) Truth be told, I tend to favor a more glamours/sexy aesthetic when it comes to clothing.

Marc's work has always reminded me of what us students wear during finals week... very soft, plain, almost pajama-esque clothing.

Once again, my bias towards a different kind of appeal most definitely affects my judgement and interpertaion of his line, but I still do not see the hype behind it....

Ciao

yeah i get what you mean it annoys me the way people who no naff all think they are all fashionable and "cool" (thats such a cliche) but yeah they think they are all that if they mention his name in conversation or no who he is.

Marc Jacobs

My favorite line in Marc by Marc Jacobs because I feel it is the most creative. I also love his shoes, especially those pumps. But I don't like the fact that he basically insulted everyone who wears his LV menswear collections and starts his shows extremely late. Also although designers who produce multiple lines do have design teams, they are still supposed to at least supervise what is going on and have some input. I think LV should get someone else to do their menswear line.

I agree that Marc is just Gap with a bigger price tag. His clothes have always just seemed frumpy to me -- the colors are always muted, and there's never any kind of flair or personality to them. They're decent for basics if you must, but as far as emitting any kind of personal style, they just don't do it for me. I never got the big hype -- even his Juergen Tueller ads didn't attract me whatsoever. There was nothing about them that made me want his clothes -- again, I just thought frump.

Haha yeah. Those all important editorials for Vice, the most significant publication on earth.
