Working or Volunteering for Fashion Week Shows

if you have never worked at a show, i recommend it because you get to learn how to put together a fashion show and what it takes to show your collection.

since the most designers who show at l.a. fashion week, are not 'huge' names, it's not as exciting but it's still interesting just to learn but all those paris and nicky fans, they usually show to at least one of the shows...

there are different jobs you could do like dressers, greeters, ushers. ushers get to watch the show you are working at so it's nice. being a dresser is a bit nerve wrecking and hard but if you are good at it you could get a job as one later on.

if you are good brown-noser, you could get jobs...or you could just get in and walk around like you are guests (i've seen lame wannabes do that... )

I wanna gain experience this summer in my internship in fashion, although when I graduate (with a degree in business) I want to be in the business area of fashion like retail, merchandising, or marketing etc. Do you think interning for a designer is a good choice or like a distributor of fashion lines? I'd like any advice on this matter thanks a lot :flower:

Exactly in the same situation!!
i'm not sure either, if it is a good choice... but it probably counts a bit more than NO EXPERIENCE AT ALL... :P
I'll try next summer, and i will also try to get infromation about volunteering in couture week (july 2007) i'll be 18, i speak french/english/spanish, and i'll do anything they want me to do!! :)

^ Good luck borjacapella!! I'm gonna try next summer as well :D

I volunteered at Dutch fashion week this year, not that Dutch fashion week is really a big thing, it was hard work but it was worth it.

I found a great resource on the Net with interviews from former volunteers, their boss, etc. Check it out here.

Good luck fashionandstyle1! Maybe I'll see you there while I'm reporting for Stylebites! :-)

Does anyone know anything about volunteering at Paris Fashion Week?
Are there any groups that anyone knows of like "Ground Crew" in NY?

Thanks.

paris usually hires people from certain agencies which is good because they get paid then some brands like Ysl just work with the people from there studio

Usually the photo agencies are also looking for interns with experience working with photo software on computers.

...but you get stuck behind the laptop downloading pics all day!

Fashion Show Jobs

I want to volunteer at a fashion show and on the application process they require you to state what position you would like to work on. So here are a few that I'm not sure of what they exactly entitle to.

SPONSORSHIP VOLUNTEER
BACKSTAGE (what exactly you do backstage?)
FASHION ENVIRONMENT
RUNWAY ROOM
RUNNER

any help would be gladly appreciated as the deadline is this week.

Thanks!

"Backstage" generally covers jobs like Runner and Runway Room. It depends on whether you approach a production company working with a fashion house or the fashion house itself.

A sponsorship volunteer is generally someone representing and 'greeting' for corporate sponsors investing funds in a show and a collection. You'll stand around either showing people into their seats or pouring their drinks for them backstage. Waste of time, IMO. You won't really get to see the nuts'n'bolts of fashion shows, which is, presumably, the aspect that attracts you.

Many fashion houses will certainly take on extra help before and during showtime on an internship basis. Bluntly, this means 'no pay'. However, it's a very good introduction to how things work. You can learn quite a lot doing this. I don't know what your eventual aims are but would suggest that you get in touch with designers and houses to ask about short showtime internships. If knocked back initially, persevere. Someone out there will be glad of some keen - free! - help.

It looks very good on resumés and CVs. Go for it! Be prepared to go to NYC or even further afield, though.
