Youth, Teens & HS trends

^ The "japanese" style is very popular in junior high here at the moment. It's quite "harajuku girl", with elements from gothic style...usually high platform shoes, loads of cheap jewellery and piercings (fake or real), miniskirts with tulle and chains, lots of powder and black eyeliner, ribbons, corsets, badges...it looks messy and is usually bad quality, plus all of the kids think they are different. The ones I know also have this annoying attitude of how "cool" and "bad" they look.

Sorry, whitelinen, I realised you posted this some time ago, but I seem to have missed this thread for some reason...

I've noticed this style quite alot on Asian girls at uni, but not on any others.

They seem to pass it off quite well, but I couldnt imagine anyone from other cultures managing to without looking tacky...is it a big thing at your school?

And about the paperbags...girls pay attention in which kind of paper/plastic bag they carry their stuff. Sometimes these bags are torm and ripped, but because there is that logo they keep using these until the very end. At some high school, girls also have these tiny handbags, and they carry their books in paper bags....where is the logic?

There's this girl that uses this tiny Burberry shopping bag (that was obviously for a perfume purchase) as a purse. It looks soo tacky. :yuk:

My school's styles are pretty tacky. The girls have their fake LVs and Bebe rhinestone tops, the guys wear baggy jeans down their butts and everyone third person shops at AE + Hollister or Aritzia + Lululemon.

I don't mean to sound racist, but the only people that I would consider "stylish" are the Asians; specifically the Koreans and Japanese. They always look well put together and aren't tacky in any sense.
And they give me compliments on my Prada bag and glasses (no one else in my school knows that brand..) :p

You know, being a chinese girl myself, living in an area dominated by chinese, and the best prove is that I live three blocks away from pacific mall, and most stylish korean style clothes come from there. I have to tell you the truth that chinese ppl knowing designer names is NOT a possitive attitude.
My school, there is ONE girl who has great korean style, the rest are utterly just wannabes, same as the A&E, A&F type. If you come to my school or arean, you know exactly what I mean, and you will get sick of the korean style within a minute, but thanks for the asian compliment anyways......

I am not racist here too, white girls in my school got over the fake designer trend since this school year started, they are now carrying that bag from Artizia (sp.) with tna on it or all over it. American Eagle is not cool anymore, holister and A&F is the new big thing. However, 40% population of my school are nerds, and I am getting closer and closer internally too.....

High school is definitely a time to experiment. People my age are highly influenced by what we see, hence the term "an impressionable age" (hint, hint, for those who read that NY Times article). I go to a culturally diverse high school and I see it right in front of my eyes. The reason people go to stores like Abercrombie and Fitch and Hollister is more because of the label that goes with it, rather than how much they like that item. I'm not ashamed to admit that I own Hollister pieces (three tops to be exact, because I am kind of ashamed :ninja::D). I find it's of a much better quality than most other alternative stores that I would buy the same type of clothing from. Though, as others have suggested, it's more about the fact that you're wearing it. I see the paper bags used as book covers so you can see the blatant logo. At this rate, our/my generation is being raised as label whores...

From my own experience, establishing a personal style is extremely difficult. Especially when you're broke and you have no car, and in my case also, very picky and reticent. But even amongst the ghetto crowds, emo crowds, A&F crowds that I encounter, I do see some standout people at my school who know how to dress. And when I say some, I mean I have encountered two :D, both unfortunately are not my friends.:p

The past wednesday, I went shopping, I walked into holister and A&F, merely to undiscover the fussy obsession of people my age. After I walk out, I realized how much people pay for conformity. They do not just pay more money for a hoodie with 40% cotton and 60% polyaster maybe some spandex. They also pay for to like and wear something that they do not truely like, they force themselves to like that stuff :( . After that lesson, I felt ashamed for how less I pay for individuality, and I admire people who pay for conformity.:innocent: :innocent: :innocent:

I think that angst is natural, but I hate the fact that it's being turned into some sort of fashion trend. Those people who experience true depression are not taken seriously (I know this from experience) because it's just a part of "teen angst". Depression is not a trend. You cant skip a shower, smudge some eyeliner and magically be in "pain". Pain isn't a trend to be spotted, it's a natural, serious part of life.

I live in an area where this is soooo popular, and maybe I wouldn't be so upset about it if it wasn't for all of the snobbery and pretension (sp?) that goes along with it. It's not just a fashion statement. If you're not punk/emo/goth/scene, then you're just a poseur/prep. Not to mention the fact that they don't even dance at their own shows! I don't even like rock and I have the decency to rock out and have fun.

Hehe, sorry for the rant, but this makes me mad! :flower: :flower:

I know exactly what you mean. I sadly had to attend a funeral a few years ago which is the hardest thing I've had to go through. Anyway I remembered how a few weeks before i had gone to this gig where this emo band were playing. They started chucking around red roses as a way to allude to a funeral when roses are put on the coffin. It made me so angry. I still get upset just thinking about it. Death is not glamourous. It's not something trivial that you can use to make your band look cooler. I think that's what a lot of people who haven't actually experienced losing someone realise.

the males in my school tend to dress "poor", but when i tally up how much their outfits cost, the approx price is quite expensive. but it's still obvious that they put effort into how they look and are quite studious.

the females either overdress by wearing extremely high heels and very dressy tops or dress "casual" [juicy sweatpants, uggs, headbands]. either way, they carry expensive designer bags. i've also noticed they are into natural beauty.

then there's a handful of goths, wiggers and scene kids.

at my old school though, the more dressed up the better. some kids looked tacky, some looked like they were trying too hard and others looked great.
lol.

I know that there is a seperate 'emo' thread, but I feel compelled to contribute.

xmodel citizen: I'm pretty sick of all the cloning that goes on with people my age (18) and younger, but have you perhaps considered that maybe these people are just looking for clarity in a confused world? Being a teenager is hard today. It's a survival of the fittest, and if you don't fit into the ideal you are often ostracised.

In my opinion, (and this is based on daily observation, living in an area with a high student population) people who feel compelled to dress and act alike often have identity issues, and a likely reason for this could be the pressure to conform to this hierachal ideal. It's like a organised rebellion. Of course most people realise that they are not rebelling at all, but if people feel better about themselves by being 'emo' or whatever else they choose to be, wheres the harm?

Besides, who is to say that they are not actually depressed? From experience of talking to them, their disillusion with life is often what brings them together.

It's all to easy to let personal experience mask our view of reality.

I'm 17 everyone just wants to look like Kate Moss. Well, the majority. I think 13-14 year olds are only just starting to follow the actual trends. It's probably because fashion is so talked about now, so they are starting to care more about it. 4 years ago when I was 13 I didnt care about fashion at all. There were things that were 'cool' but they werent necessarily the trends you saw in Vogue

That had me laughing for about ten minutes straight.

@ my University, 60% of kids seem to think they're from Laguna Beach or Beverly Hills with their Haviana flip flops, A&F minis, Lacoste Polos, designer handbags, and 30 inch heels, 30% are trying to be all Punk/Emo when most of them aren't really but think the look is cool and its trendy to be all "brooding and deep" 6% is urban gear with ugly humongous t-shirts splattered with Rocawear, ECKO, etc. 5% have their own style and don't particularly follow any trend. I like to think of myself as that 4%. All teenage trends should go, and im only 19.
Oh, and for some odd reason those hideous shoes VANS are quite popular in my city. It seems the uglier the color combo on the shoe, the better. *shudders*

Oh wow, how times have changed. When I was in school, the only places I shopped were vintage stores and some of my most treasured finds were at The Garment District on "A Dollar A Pound Saturday"!! I simply couldn't pull together a look I could live with at the H&Ms and Urban Outfitters. Such dull colours and run-of-the-mill designs, none of which can be compared to decades worth of eccentric fashion at the vintage shops - you can just as easily find a Victorian slip as a super-future Courreges-esque mod dress - at the sort of prices that afforded the fun of dressing up in a different ensemble every other day, with hats, bags and boots to match. And I hated labels and recognizable designer looks, I didn't want anyone to dress me, or carry advertising for others by displaying ugly loud labels. That's how I fell in love with fashion - it's about playing, experimenting, taking risks, expressing one's thoughts and moods.

I live in Paris. Unfortunately some trends seem to be international : D. Half of my school dress like what we call " chals" They follow the latest fashion and have all the " it " accessories and they always look false, like, too much make up, blow dried hair, fake tanning... There's also all those girls that like Juicy Couture and stuf like that, all in light blue, baby pink and white... There's the nerd category, nothing special, just plain ugly and finally some people that dress from thrift stores and flea markets.Oh but i was gonna forget all the " rebels" gothics, punks and skaters.
I hope some people would dress better or at least have their own style but hey it's youth i guess

is this what you meant? http://hel-looks.com/ because I quite like most of the looks on this site. then again, I am a teen!

I'm a teen too, but I don't think I've ever seen a look I like on hel-looks.com. It all looks so contrived to me, different strokes for different folks! :ninja::yuk:

I don't have a problem with most teenagers dressing badly, but I have a problem with them dressing alike in order to be accepted. Style (or the clothes you wear, if you are not that interested), good or bad, shouldn't be about wearing things because you must, it is about wearing what you like, whether it is "good" or "bad". The lack of thinking by themselves is what bugs me the most about teen trends.

That said, I won't post in this thread anymore since I would only get into useless bashing of teen trends.

Did I understand this wrong? :o I would think that those girls are not into the natural look, unfortunately. What with their overly tanned skin and too-straightened hair.

Hey, does anyone have the "kiddie backpack" thing going on in their school/town? It's just a small child's backpack with some sort of cartoon on it. I've seen Dora the Explorer, Spiderman, Bob the Builder, polly Pocket, Cars, Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles etc etc. I thought maybe it was just my school, but I went across town and saw the same thing.

I've seen those "kiddie backpacks" all over my school. It has been like that for the past three years. I really dont the appeal of those backpacks.
