Zac Posen Fall 2005: NYC

:p :flower: ...
aww...thanks for putting a smile on my face dear...
i guess you're right...there's always hope...

Maybe not SOME of the Haute Coutoure items, but the silouettes has been created many times before. The only thing that's different is the icing on the cake.

I just HAD to post this pic of Zac at the NY fashion week party, trying to look mysterious

the Zac-Puffy Connection Revealed from today's NY Times-

from: "The Rap on Puffy's Empire" NY Times 'Business' July 24, 2005:

by TRACIE ROZHON
excerpts:

"(in 2004) Sean John bought a 50 percent partnership with Zac Posen, one of the hottest and most social of the young designers. (The price was not disclosed, but bankers said it was about $2 million.) "

"Mr. Combs also has to figure out how to incorporate Zac Posen into his empire. Last week, he said the plan was to have Mr. Posen do "a secondary line," probably aimed at department stores, and to license his name for accessories." "A woman would buy a Zac Posen handbag, a pair of shoes," Mr. Combs said. "He's different from Marc Jacobs, of course, but he's definitely following in his footsteps." Mr. Posen, who is only 25, has also been "a quiet consultant" to the new women's line, Mr. Combs said.""

My thoughts on this information:
1) After about 5 years, Zac Posen's ENTIRE business is valued at approximately $4 Million. Diddy was able to buy half of Zac's company for $2 million. This is sobering info re: the actual value of a young designers company; and a reality check for those who had great hopes for Zac a few years ago. Also zac's famous 'socializing' as stated above seems to have detracted from the pure sartorial ambition of his initial efforts imo.

2) think about this- "Zac Posen for Sean John Women Accessories Collection." That's even MORE depressing for those of us who had great hopes for Zac becoming a new important voice in US fashion.

3) 'quiet consultant' clearly zac is aware of the image problems beiong associated with a label like sean john. In a sense this NY Times article spills the beans.

i love zac posen. i think he makes beautiful clothes that people want to wear. there is some stuff that is not so cute, but you find that in all collections, its impossible to like everything.

anyway, i thought this dress was absolutely stunning

and this dress

and for those who say he steals from other designers, they all do. just look at the outfit look alike thread, even couture copies eachother

Seems to be a misunderstanding.

The article discusses Puffy's plan for his self owned empire and his encouraging Zac to expand the growing Zac Posen line. I don't think Puffy would allow the partnership to harbor an arrangement under that kind of moniker.

As far as 'the image problems associated with a label like Sean John', I think that's complete crap. If anything, I'd love to see his business plans. I wonder why a label that sells, that has an audience that buys, why an American designer who is self owned and seriously investing in the future of American fashion can't get a break on this board. I'm quite sure that Mr. Posen could have had his pick of investors, though I doubt they would have been at all enthusiastic by his lack or original thought, execution or just plain sizzle.

I am curious to see exactly what Puffy meant by Zac's 'second line.'
zac has talked about doing men's clothing too- certainly all of us are interested in seeing whatever zac's plans are.
from the 1st moment that puffy bought half of zac's company i think many of zac's original fans took pause at potential future influence on zac's work by co-owner puffy. perhaps zac has been so far independant of puffy's influence on his own line but there is ever-present the potential for money/ownership/partnership intruding on creativity/vision/independance.
[the phrase 'quiet consultant' suggests that zac did not want his participation in puffy's new women's line known]
the times article claims that puffy is the overall design voice in his own company, despite frequent reports to the contrary from the beginning of sean john.
Im sure youd agree that zac's design vision & projects ever-interest us.

so far I cannot say the same for sean john although the times article today quoted bergdorf's robert burke saying nice things about puffy's new womens' line.
we shall see.

Zac Attack
"I love Zac," said Nicky Hilton. (What else was she going to say, having just finished a strenuous table-dancing session with the young designer and Stella Schnabel?) "I went to his first collection at Gen Art, like, four years ago." With a fleet of Jaguars, courtesy of one of Posen's sponsors, stationed outside, the multitasking designer and his posse took over the penthouse loft of the Soho Grand Hotel. On hand were Kerry Washington, Bijou Phillips, Ashanti, and Posen's business partner Diddy. Speaking of partnerships, San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom showed up with… fashion-loving wife Kimberly, with whom he is in the process of getting a divorce. Hmmm, perhaps, as Posen put it in describing his collection, they just "wanted to be upbeat and in the moment." And what made him choose Sardinia as his inspiration? "I needed something fresh. New York depresses me." Yeah, a Jaguar will do that to you.
