"It's going to [be a] more evolved version of the sound but bigger and with some more lush production and some sweet jams," she laughed. "I'm not at liberty to say [when the album will be released]. ... I don't know if it's 'top secret,' but I've been told I'm not allowed to say, so I'll just say that it's close to being done and probably coming out in the spring. Probably. Maybe."
So fans probably, maybe can expect to hear the follow-up to Volume One this spring. But that doesn't mean Deschanel isn't giving the project her full attention. Even after earning raves (and becoming one of this year's actors we're most thankful for) for her turn in this year's indie-flick "(500) Days of Summer," she'd still rather be making music over movies any day. After all, it's just easier that way.
"Well, there are fewer people you have to deal with in the music world, and I have more power, I think, because I'm writing music, and it's just a few of us in the studio," she said. "So it's probably easier for me in the music world."
I didn't know that Zooey liked to get her drink on!Kate Beckinsale and Zooey Deschanel will be featured in Absolut ads to be introduced on Thursday at a party in New York. The ads are part of a campaign by the New York office of TBWA/Chiat/Day, part of the TBWA Worldwide unit of the Omnicom Group.
In keeping with an Absolut tradition, the ads are being photographed by a well-known fashion shutterbug, Ellen Von Unwerth.
The ads carry the theme “Every drink is an exceptional experience,” extending a recent campaign for Absolut that carries the theme “Doing things differently leads to something exceptional.”
After years of fans' pleading, begging and all-round hoping, it's finally happened! Zooey Deschanel has signed on for a guest appearance in big sister Emily's hit show Bones! The actress and singer stars as Dr. Temperance Brennan's newly-discovered second cousin Margaret in an episode titled 'The Goop On The Girl', which sees Brennan juggling her lookalike relative while also unravelling the mystery of an exploding Santa Claus. We caught up with the sisters to chat about the Christmas-themed episode.
Why has it taken you this long to appear on screen together?
Zooey: "We have different career paths and it seems weird, but it's difficult to schedule. I'd talked about doing a Bones episode for a couple of years but it never ended up working out because with films you get a job and sometimes have to leave the next week. I think we both like having our own space and the one thing I would fear about working with a family member is you want to make sure you don't bring any silly bickering or family things to set, although we don't really do that anymore. I just wanted to make sure everything was right and it was really fun - Emily was extremely welcoming and accomodating and very sweet. I'm glad I did it."
What was it like working together?
Emily: "It was great, especially on the first day because it wasn't that hectic. We had a scene that was just Ryan O'Neal and the two of us, which was really nice. We've never worked together before except our own plays we've done together!"
Zooey: "It was really fun to watch Emily work and I enjoyed it and I'm excited to see the episode."
How involved were you both with helping devise Zooey's character?
Emily: "Hart [Hanson] came to me with the idea of a Christmas episode. He told me some things about it and that she would be my relative."
Zooey: "I was nervous because I've never signed on to anything without reading or knowing what the character is first, so it was a little scary for me! Obviously I knew all the writers on the show are really good and they weren't going to hang me out to dry, but it was a leap of faith which I'm not used to. They were very receptive and let me give some of my ideas and we were able to come up with a cool character."
Is there any chance of Zooey returning to the show in the future?
Zooey: "It's Emily's set, so..."
Emily: "We'd love to have you back any time! I think it is open-ended and it's open-ended for a reason. It took us five seasons to figure out when Zooey could come on the show so it may take another five seasons for her to come back!"
Zooey: "Season ten!"
Emily: "We're so happy it worked out. It was something we have been trying to do from the beginning, it's just scheduling that is hard."
What's in store for Brennan and Booth this Christmas?
Emily: "She kind of opens up and has a new level of compassion. I think any time Booth and Brennan have some kind of breakthrough it brings both of them together and closer. You'll see Brennan kind of starts to have a paradigm shift in how she is looking at certain situations and Booth kind of holds her hand through that. I think when you go through something that changes you, it is profound in a way and if somebody is helping you, it brings you closer together. Christmas brings people together and as much as Brennan resists that aspect, she usually ends up with people at the end!"
What do you think of how their relationship is playing out this season?
Emily: "I think it makes sense. We're in the fifth season of this show where two characters have chemistry but nothing has happened. It's a great way to explore the relationship and take it to another level without necessarily having some physical connection! It's taking the relationship in a new direction and a deeper place. Brennan wrote the book while Booth was in the coma, then Booth had the coma dream inspired by the book. The fact it didn't happen in reality almost doesn't matter because it happened in their minds and they can't get it out of their minds. It's an interesting dynamic and I welcome it because it's a clever way to deepen the relationship and explore a new relationship."
Any other guest stars lined up this season?
Emily: "We have Richard T. Jones and Diedrich Bader in an episode that is really interesting. We get locked in the lab by these government agents and they insist that we tell them the cause of death of these bones they brought. We start investigating and there are a lot of things that lead us to believe that the remains they brought are those of John F. Kennedy. We go into what happened with the Kennedy assasination."
Finally, any chance of you both collaborating on anything else in the future?
Emily: "We don't have anything lined up. Besides this experience, we have our own relationship that has nothing to do with business."
Zooey: "It was so much fun to do Bones, but in a lot of ways it's just nice that I can stand back and see Emily and be proud of her without having to be in business. I just feel like it makes more sense for us to both have our own things that we do."
Emily: "We can be supportive but we don't have to work together."
For those folks who didn't think Paste was totally daft for naming She & Him's Volume One the best album of 2008, we've got good news for you: Volume Two is on the way. (For those of you who still consider us spineless drivel-mongers for the same, well, carry on with your Monday.)
The new album was recorded in Portland and Los Angeles over the past year-and-a-half, and will feature all-new original material penned by actress/chanteuse Zooey Deschanel and produced by M. Ward. "I think that the dark shades that were on the last record are maybe a little bit darker on the new record, and the brighter shades on the last record are a little bit brighter on the new record," Ward tells Paste. "I think that people are going to hear more contrasts, which is always something that I shoot for in the studio."
Volume One was essentially recorded in a vacuum free of outside pressure and expectations, an atmosphere that the duo tried to recreate for Volume Two. "I think we approached the second record organically, the same as we did for the first record," Deschanel tells Paste. "But the songs are different so the record is different. We had a bit more time and resources so we were able to work a little deeper."
After almost two years of balancing She & Him recording sessions and nationwide touring with their other endeavors (like Ward's solo work and side-projects including Monsters of Folk, and Deschanel's recent roles in movies including 500 Days of Summer) the two are still finding new reasons to be excited about their once-seemingly-unlikely musical partnership.
"Zooey writes pretty often and she doesn't need any sort of encouragement," Ward says. "What I wanted to do was to show more dimensions to Zooey's writing, and I'm excited for people to hear the record because I think it's going to continue to show the strength of her writing."
"I learned that Matt can become a virtuoso of any stringed instrument he picks up, which is tremendously unfair to the rest of us mortals," Deschanel notes. "It's great to work with Matt because he is always true to himself, and working with him over an extended period confirms this time and again."
An official release date for Volume Two hasn't been set, but we're told to expect it in the spring. For the curious, we do know that Deschanel's new husband, Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, will not appear on the album. (If you feel the need to weep, might we suggest doing so to the tune of the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack?)
