Her ride: "I'd probably take my Volvo, it'd be a good road-trip car. I've had the same car since I was 17. I might get a new one soon, but it seems so wasteful. I mean, there's nothing wrong with my car, it's just not new."

"My parents took us on a road trip through Italy when I graduated from high school and my sister [Emily] graduated from college. We went through Rome and Tuscany, Florence and Pisa, down to Sardinia and back up to Milan. In Florence, Emily and I had to hide in our room from the men on the streets who did not share our philosophies on, or consequently care about, the boundaries of 'personal space' to which we were accustomed. Thus, my memories of Florence are a blur of Italian MTV and dubbed reruns of Seinfeld. Oh, and we accidentally attended a meat festival with my vegan sister, oops."
So you don't fall prey to such disasters, Zooey has devised a very specific set of guidelines to make your next road trip a success:
1. When touring New England or Canada, maple products are to be sealed and go directly into the trunk. "I don't want that stuff anywhere near my arms or hands. It never goes away."
2. No convertibles. "They look cool, but five minutes in one of those things and I need to spend quality time spritzing No More Tangles to deal with my hair."
3. Be sure to note the often-surprising arsenal of collectibles harbored by B&B owners everywhere. "I've been making dolls/throwing pots/collecting firearms since…"
4. Collect souvenirs for a time capsule.
5. Try to do karaoke, often. "I have done karaoke in many cities. I think the best was in Ensenada, Mexico, if just for the name of the bar: La Uh! Discotheque."
