I've noticed some swing era (late 30's through the early 50's) inspired fashion on the runways for the a/w shows... not sure if this is intentional, but it certainly is noticable to me at least. lots of wide shoulders, bell-shaped and tulip skirts, high waists, etc. 1940's fashion is not my pet subject and it's not my style, but I do enjoy seeing designer's reinterpretations of the era...to me it's a bit different from the ladylike that's been all over the runways...but it's very chic and glamourous if done without being too kitschy.

(all pics from http://www.vogue.co.uk)

key example is temperley's collection for a/w 2005. it really reminds me of hollywood's image of 1940's south america - latin nightclubs and singers... bright colours, beading, bell skirts, exotic headdresses... and the last little temperley dress makes me think of judy garland

this emma cook wrapover dress looks a bit 40's to me...especially with those black mary janes. the green velvet dress is boyd...very classic 1940's shape.

If you're blue and you don't know where to go to, why don't you go where fashion sits? Putting on the ritz!

I'm a big fan of the looks of the 20/30's era when guys being gay didn't nescessarily mean they weren't into you.

you just made me think of the king of swing, style, and class, mr. astaire. :crush:

^ I think it is because of both the aviator and skycaptain and the world of tomorrow...

gwen stefani in the aviator (I'm also just reminded that a lot of her l.a.m.b. stuff seems to have a swing/40's feel to it)

kate beckinsale, in a fantastic hat, from the aviator...

Yes Utopia, I have to agree with you....it's both of those movies that have inspired the trend. I really like the clothing...the colors are rich and plentiful.

I can't help it - that song will forever remind me of the great dance scene from Young Frankenstein!

 i love that...

well spotted guys.. there certainly is a 30's -40's mood around,
after all the economic crisis makes the parallele no?

the feeling -as in a trend- is 'lets have fun, pleasure, indulgence, sensuality'
and of course it makes sense during 'hardtimes'
shiny fabrics, satin, rich and light velvet, sequins, it all throws us back to
nostagia for a long lost kind of glam that sure has to do with hollywood
and the stars era.. we all need a tiny bit of glam to make life lux..

(luxury as in esthetics/style/textures is the rising megatrend, destined to go boom, soon.. everyone needs a bit of lux in their life at the moment, be it a velvet top, a rich colored lipstick, a special (as in unique) pair of shoes )

Now this is a trend I can really get behind! I have the quintessential 1940s figure with square shoulders and legs that deserve the label "gams." Some of my most flattering clothes are vintage from the 1940s and 1950s, or are ones I have made after that same style.

Maybe I will have a good excuse to wear this little woollen dress this coming fall. I made it ages and ages and ages ago, and even I felt a little conspicuous each time I have worn it.

I love this era for clothing. so pretty and simple.

I think this pic is sooo cute utopia. I like the fact that more conservativeness is coming back. I love Marc Jacobs as well, the whole stepford wives thing is soo cute.

Ronit Zilka has more, their whole collection was based on the swing theme
moody but sweet :flower:
