Karen Stark/Harvey Berin beaded dress, 1960s
Harvey Berin, the manufacturer, and Karen Stark, the designer, worked closely to produce feminine, ladylike designs. Each season they adapted styles from Paris couture for the American market. Founded in 1921, the firm was an important name in high quality ready-to-wear from the 1940s to 1970. Pat Nixon's inaugural gown of 1969 was a Karen Stark/Harvey Berin creation.

The dress has two layers: the outer one is peach silk chiffon embellished with opaque white beaded flowers with loops of silver-lined crystal beads in the centers; the under layer is a pink silk crepe slip dress.

The style is unabashedly pretty—both ladylike and sexy. The delicate white beaded petals against a soft pink background make me yearn for spring (and will make the men in the room yearn for you!)

The bodice is lined with ivory faille; the skirt is lined with pale pink China silk. The under layer closes in back with a metal zipper; the outer layer closes with tiny snaps. The neckline and armholes are beautifully finished with hand-rolled hems. The cummerbund and bow are peach silk organza.

The dress was purchased in June, 1965 in Saks Fifth Avenue. A Saks label with the name of the original owner is located near the designer label—see the bottom picture.

Norman Norell beaded silk crepe evening dress, c.1968
For the woman with total confidence! Norell beaded evening gowns need no adornment other than your attitude. In this amazing beaded evening gown, the designer let his signature mermaid theme evolve into a more figure-forgiving shape.

Norell retained the high neckline, overall beading, and lean hip-hugging shape, but expanded the bodice with fabulous batwing sleeves. The covered-up look is broken only by deep figure-revealing slits: one in the front skirt and the other in the bodice back. The contour waistline gracefully dips from slightly below the bust to the waist in back.

This glamorous dress is fashioned from black silk crepe covered with black glass bugle beads. The dress is unlined, allowing the weight of the fabric to cling to the figure. The skirt and sleeves close with zippers. The batwing sleeves are cut-in-one with the bodice.

Norman Norell was the master of ready-to-wear that could pass for couture. He consistently produced handsome, luxurious garments distinguished for their cutting edge style. From 1940-1970, Norell was at the top of his profession, producing collections that were often copied in Paris. In the 1960s The New Yorker wrote that Norell's influence was rivaled only by that of Balenciga. This sensational evening dress is quintessential Norell-elegant and very glamorous.

Hannah Troy watered silk evening gown, 1950s-1960s
This lovely gown is fashioned from ivory watered silk taffeta printed with bouquets of romantic roses. I love the draped bodice and huge bow. The crystal pleating at the top of the skirt controls the fullness without adding bulk.

The design with roses embowered in their own green leaves has a poetry all its own. The watered silk print achieves a masterful Impressionist effect (6th picture down): we can almost see the brushstrokes used to emphasize the changing quality of light.

The bodice of the gown is self-lined and boned. The skirt is lined with silk organza and has an attached crinoline. The gown closes in back with a nylon coil zipper.
