2011 Academy Awards

^^I think they're trying to appeal to a younger audience. I think they'll be good enough.

its not like anne and james are very young though :ninja:
but i do see what your talking about

^TSN is overrated but still better than King's Speech :D
Not for me. I found TSN extremely boring. All of the legal/lawyer scenes...OH MY GOD! Insanely boring! And too much fast talking -- not just Jesse Eisenberg but Andrew Garfield was guilty of that as well.

I think that young people are probably more inclined to like TSN because it deals with a contemporary topic.

i dont want to see TSN because i hate facebook
but im torn becuse i have a crush on jesse

James and Anne, bland? They are anything but. Especially James.

Also, The Social Network has nothing to do with Facebook, really. It's a classic tale of betrayal, greed and friendship. I hate Facebook, too. I would check it out.

I hate facebook too but I loved the movie. And its very fast paced dialogues are what made the movie imo.
You can't have a Sorkin screenplay without them :flower:

why are anne and james hosting ?
they both seem very bland to me :ninja:
and thats not referring to their acting skills btw..
You've never seen Anne's little part in Hugh Jackman's opening in 2009? Was really quite great. Whetever you like her or not, Anne is a cool girl with loads of charisma.

I agree w most of you about Nolan. I didn't know he never got nominated... That's actually ridiculous... And about Ryan Gosling, I also don't see how you can nominate Michelle and not him. The movie is about their performances and how they complete each other... seems unfair to me.

Has anyone seen Rabbit Hole? I'm not a fan of Nicole Kidman's work from the last years, so I'm pretty skeptical about watching it... Is it worth it?

I'm not the biggest Anne Hathaway fan, but she's great on Saturday Night Live. Totally confident, funny, a great singer, a great speaker. She's actually a good pick for the job. I don't even like to admit that, because I think she's not the greatest actress that other critics seem to think she is (*cough Rachel Getting Overratedly Married*).

Now, I am the biggest James Franco fan  and I think he is just the strangest person for this part! He is awkward in interviews, goes in and out of being lucid, charming, quiet, very slow-speaking, and sometimes downright incomprehensible  But he's gorgeous as heck, he's a dashing m----af---a, and he's certainly the Man of the Year for inciting the press and making men and women everywhere swoon. He's done fantastic movies in the past 4-5 years, he's done General Hospital, he's done plays, he's written a book, he fell asleep at Columbia. He's America's Sweetheart  So I understand the choice for that reason.

All I hear over and over about Rabbit Hole is that it's depressing. I won't be able to take the theme, so if I want to remind myself how fantastic I think Nicole Kidman is, I would just watch The Hours again or likewise.

I just recently watched Rabbit Hole.

The movie is devastatingly depressing all through out, from beginning to end with only a few seconds of happiness here and there. There really wasn't a "climax" since the movie is pretty much just a portrayal of a sad couple and how they deal with things from a day to day basis.

As for Nicole Kidman's character, it's pretty much one noted, but she carries the character very well. It's typical oscar-esque role, you know... the character that practically evokes sadness and wants you to feel her pain and in the end she comes to a great realization? Yeah, that sorta thing.

Aside from that, it's not a movie for everyone, especially not to those who want to see a big blockbuster movie since this movie isn't trying to be that.

I think the best parts of the movie were the parts where the camera just focuses on one frame without the characters really talking. It really tries hard to make you feel as though you were there in there shoes, and I think it worked.

You're actually making me want to watch it  I like slow paced movies, that follow characters around. I kinda like depressing movies, too...
So maybe it's time I start appreciating Nicole's work again :p

Hmmm.... Rabbit Hole is kinda like Blue Valentine, what seems like a slow pacing movie really isn't so slow pacing since there's always something happening.

Hmmm.... I think the best Nicole ever acted was in The Hours, and her role there is also pretty much like the one in Rabbit Hole. One noted, but still extremely well done.

Oh, and can I say that she hid her Aussie accent extremely well? You can only catch a bit of it in some words.

I really liked Blue Valentine, too. I know what you mean about being slow paced, but not really since there's a lot happening to the characters. I also think The Hours was her best work, although I really liked Molin Rouge too. But after that and the whole "frozen" face, I stopped enjoying her performances. I hope I can enjoy her work again, then! :flower:

Yeah, I haven't really liked any of her work since The Hours. Australia was disappointing....

And about her frozen face, at the very least it didn't hinder her from believably crying in Rabbit Hole.

Did anyone see Dogtooth?

I've seen it after a film student friend recommended it..What a shocking and disturbing movie! It shouldn't even be for 18 and over, more like 25 and over :D
I can't believe it's nominated for an Oscar, I didn't think the voters were so open minded :D It definitely stays with you and its shocking on so many levels (the VHS recorder scene?)
I liked it but I surely didn't enjoy it and I don't think I want to see it ever again. Does it makes sense?

What did you think of it? :flower:

I saw Dogtooth too. It's crazy. Weirdest movie I've ever seen. I was a little underwhelmed by the film though. Probably because I had such high expectations after hearing so much about it. Still, it's not a bad film in any way, very original.

Rabbit Hole. I didn't like it. It didn't have any emotional impact on me, at least not with the main story. In fact, I found the story of Nicole's character brother more saddening because of how his mom was feeling about it (Dianne Wiest was the standout for me). I just couldn't relate nor understand Nicole's character's actions throughout the whole film. I thought she was just a spoiled b*tch to be quite honest. I didn't feel bad for her because she lost a son, I was annoyed with her because of how selfish and bitchy she was. I'm not a fan of Nicole (though I do like some of her work, Dogville, The Others, To Die For) but I didn't see anything here that she doesn't usually do.

Wow - there are such different reactions over this film. I get bored pretty easily at the movies, but The Social Network kept me engaged the entire time. I felt like they did a good job with the legal/lawyer scenes.. Also, the movie - because of the music - had a very dramatic feel... I loved that about it.

**SPOILER ALERT**

I think you're forgetting that Nicole's character was still grieving which may explain her selfish attitude and extremely sensitive behavior. She wanted so hard to move on but it's definitely difficult when your husband so badly wants to preserve everything in the house that embodied their son like his clothes and even finger prints on doorknobs. It was even worst that her sister became pregnant after all this. Yes, she was annoying and selfish, but let's not forget that a lot of people are like that in real life when they deal with loses and people around them are usually oblivious to the fact that they may come off as insensitive.

Her mom made a great point near the end of the movie that the pain of losing a love one never truly goes away and that's what Nicole's character is having a hard time dealing with.
