2011 Academy Awards

I'm so blah about this year's Oscars. Hopefully the hosts will make it interesting.

The hosts look okay. I wish they would stop trying to make the ceremony shorter, though. I loved the long, rambly speeches and how you could go out to dinner with your friends and come back and the Oscars would still be on.

I think I'm still stuck in 2002 because the prospect of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis presenting at the Oscars is giving me funny feelings.

I understand why: they were both in nominated movies, they were in a movie together, etc, but it's just... JT! and Jackie! I can't get over it.

So thoughts? My first thought was since when has Black Swan been considered an indie film. Sorry but I don't class it as an indie. As much as I like Aronofsky Best Feature, Lead Actress and Directing is a joke. I thought Jennifer Lawrence would be a shoe in.

I don't know the nominees so it's hard to judge, but to me it doesn't look surprising. On another note, have you seen James Franco comments on Ricky Gervais and the oppening speech?
Turns out, Ricky Gervais isn't the only award show host in Hollywood who can toss around the insults. In fact, now he's getting a taste of his own medicine.
Gervais, who ravaged Hollywood with his insult-heavy assault as host of the Golden Globes, wrote a mock script for Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway -- and, no surprise here, it wasn't filled with butterflies and good feelings. Franco was not amused, ripping Gervais not for being mean, but for just plain not being good.
"He did his award show and he bombed. Why is he trying to get in on ours?" Franco remarked to E! News. Upon reading Gervais's script, Franco was less than impressed. "Horrible. His lines weren't good on the Golden Globes. Why does he want to do our lines?"
Perhaps Franco was especially upset because the script contained a shot right at him:
You probably know me from "127 Hours" where I play a man trapped in an enclosed space who decides he would rather cut his own arm off than stay where he was. Now that sounds "way out" but wait till half way through this f**king ceremony and you'll start to identify with him.
The one part Franco liked? When Gervais ripped on himself. Those, he said, he might use. And then he thanked him. Facetiously, of course.
Don't expect the nastiness to get brought on stage, however. Hathaway has said that their show won't be the full-on assault that made Gervais infamous.

Is it just me, or is he being kind of a jerk? There's also a video on Eonline about it...

Yay for Winter's Bone and Black Swan. Unlikely to be repeated at the Oscars.

To be eligible for a Spirit nomination a film has to have a total budget of less than $20 million. Estimated budget for Black Swan was $13 million.

When picking the nominations this is in the committee's guidelines:

How does the Nominating Committee determine if a film is “independent”?
The Spirit Awards Nominating Committee applies the following guidelines in making its selections:
• Uniqueness of vision
• Original, provocative subject matter
• Economy of means
• Percentage of financing from independent sources
Films that are made with an “economy of means” AND are fully financed by a studio or an indie studio division may still be considered “independent” if the subject matter is original and provocative.
Black Swan were backed by Fox Searchlight but I'm not sure how much funding came from them. Regardless, it clearly met the Spirits' criteria for eligibility. Quite a few of this year's Oscar Best Picture nominees can be classified as indie under these guidelines.

I hope he is not beeing serious when 'dissing' Ricky - Gervais is the funniest presenter because he is really mocking the oh-so-perfect-celebs without being one himself - I mean, come on! James Franco is like the perfect guy for me - but him thinking Ricky would be way worse than him and Anne???!!! come on, I just can hope Franco is joking....otherwise I would have to rethink my star-crush on him...

Oscar Nominees Get Ranked, Hosts Hathaway and Franco Draw Buzz

While the world holds its collective breath to hear who takes home the statuettes at the 83rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday, there are already crowd favorites among the contenders. Not surprisingly, the younger set, including Oscar telecast hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco, is drawing the most buzz according to E-Poll Market Research, which ranks nominees based on overall appeal and awareness. Gerry Philpott, chief executive officer of the firm, told WWD, "The anticipation is high this year for a number of reasons - popular movies, known and promising stars, and most importantly, youth. From the selection of the hosts, to some of the nominees such as Hailee Steinfeld, Jesse Eisenberg and Jennifer Lawrence, you are seeing a fresh crop of new talent that will draw the younger audiences."

Oscar-Nominated Actors by E-Score Celebrity

E-Score Celebrity is conducted weekly among a representative sample of 1,100 respondents ages 13+, representative of the US population with respect to income, age, education, and geographic demographics.

Data citations should be attributed to E-Poll Market Research, whose E-Score Celebrity service ranks more than 6,000 celebrities on awareness, appeal, and 46 different personality attributes

The E-Score is a composite measure that encapsulates the relative marketing effectiveness of each individual celebrity in the E-Score Celebrity database. This calculation takes into account awareness and appeal scores, as well as negative appeal and other factors. Each personality is then ranked on a scale from 1 to 100 based on their score relative to all celebrities measured.

ITA!! I have a huge crush on Franco, but as far as comedians go, Gervais is the best. And I think he was amazing in the Gloden Globes. Finally someone who isn't afraid to speak out. I was disapointed at Franco's remarks. But maybe you'r right and he was joking... I'm very curious to see how his presentation will go tonight.

When does the Oscars start (CET time) and where can one watch it online?

This whole award season, like most seasons, has had some nauseating moments. But the difference is that this year it's people I would not have suspected of being as*-kissers. Natalie's the one that comes to mind first. Then there's Melissa Leo and her mink coat.
But the worst one for me is Christian Bale. I never would have thought he was the babbling type. He really enjoys the sound of his own voice.

@beatriz :flower:

ohhh my god: i just returned from the movies and watched 'Black Swan' I loved it - Natalie totally deserves the Oscar - rooting for her - the whole movie hall where Black Swan was showing was sold out tonight  and even my BF who is not interested in Ballet really enjoyed it! I screamed out loud 2 times which is rather not my thing to do in movie theatres :innocent:

Apparently he was joking so don't worry. The media doesn't get ''sarcasm''

Thanks auxt. Also E! has already started (you should be able to watch it online for those who don't have a TV). They are discussing the fashions right now and the carpet starts in about an hour.

I copied it from another forum where I had posted it with pictures and then forgot to edit out the spaces. I tried to edit them out just now, but it says I can't because I posted it over 10 minutes ago. Sorry.
