2011 Academy Awards

How about 10 nominations for Best Picture?

1. The Social Network
2. True Grit (feels like The Coens get nominated every year!)
3. The King's Speech
4. Inception
5. The Town (though I didn't get the hype)

How about

5. Black Swan?
6. 127 Hours? - I think this might be a good possibility.
7. Blue Valentine?
8. The Fighter?
9. Another Year? - Haven't even heard of this one. I have to look it up.

Shutter Island - I liked this film. Liked it, but didn't love it. Seemed like there was no hype at the time of the film at all, though. It was delayed numerous times since 2009, and by the time of its release, audiences seemed to forget about it.

Hereafter - Audiences seemed to hardly respond to this one. Came and went without much fanfare. I know it's Clint Eastwood, but some seemed to feel like he lost his touch.

Winter’s Bone - Same with this one. I hear a lot about Jennifer Lawrence's performance, but not much about the movie itself.

AFI's Top 10 films of the year:
BLACK SWAN
THE FIGHTER
INCEPTION
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
127 HOURS
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
THE TOWN
TOY STORY 3
TRUE GRIT
WINTER’S BONE

I think the Best Picture list will look a lot similar to this. Just replace Winter's Bone or possibly The Fighter with The King's Speech (which wasn't eligible). It made me realise how many US contenders there. Usually there a few more foreign titles in contention.

5. The Town (though I didn't get the hype)

9. Another Year? - Haven't even heard of this one. I have to look it up.
I agree with you on The Town. It was decent enough but no Gone Baby Gone.

Another Year is Mike Leigh's new one. It's had excellent reviews in the UK. Tried to see this one at the cinema but my friend got the time wrong and we missed it.

Shutter Island - I liked this film. Liked it, but didn't love it. Seemed like there was no hype at the time of the film at all, though. It was delayed numerous times since 2009, and by the time of its release, audiences seemed to forget about it.

Winter’s Bone - Same with this one. I hear a lot about Jennifer Lawrence's performance, but not much about the movie itself.
Shutter Island - They've sent screeners out so they are pushing it for awards. I really liked it.

Winter's Bone was so intense and memorable. Could be a surprise package. Lawrence has her nom sewn up but John Hawkes and Dale Dickey must be in with a shot in Supporting.

With Katie announcing the Globe nominations tomorrow, wonder if they're going to nominate Tom for Knight & Day. Wouldn't surprise me tbh. Comedy Actor category is weak and they love him.

i honestly hope Fincher wins an Oscar. he made something as inane as facebook incredibly entertaining.
i hope toy story 3 gets the best picture.none of the live action flicks seem as good.

 I'm still in awe with Red getting best picture nom. Ran out of comedy/musical film eh GG?

Golden Globes:

These are weird. Seriously where is Toy Story 3 and True Grit?

I saw Alice In Wonderland recently and was not overly impressed. Plus didn't Red and The Tourist get middling to poor reviews? Were they struggling to find things to nominate?

At least Mad Men got nominated in the TV category. B)

The Tourist got atrocious reviews and bombed at the box office even though I enjoyed it. It's certainly not some fantastic movie, it's cute.

They just want Angelina and Brad on the red carpet. For me, the indicator of the right winners are the BAFTA's.

good point Merel:flower: crisis times ask for measures like that - and Angelina and Brad on the red carpet will always push the viewer rate!

^ even though, don't Brad and Angelina always show up in the end? (even when they are not nominated for anything...)

I think this is the year of Social Network, it's probably going all the big Oscars, the Academy loves movies that are kind of cultural marks
