Was The Social Network really that good of a film?

no, i speak for myself and the people i know, we just thought it will be awful and it wasn't.... so the movie is average but much better than expected.

there are no more great movies, not this year for sure. but i did watch some spanish and french movies, so underrated. the future is in european cinematography.

I think TSN is a good film, but over-hyped. This year's Up In The Air, maybe... but clearly I'm in the minority. Most people (general public and critics) really, really love it.

Was The Social Network really that good of a film?

Good? Yes. Amazing? No.

Probably not a film I would watch twice.

I still have a lot to watch... But so far, from the films in contention of being nominated for some type of award at the Oscars, these are the ones I've seen:

(ranked in order!)

Animal Kingdom
Winter's Bone
The Social Network
Inception
The Kids Are All Right

Documentaries
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Restrepo

Animal Kingdom's the best film of 2010 so far from this group. I don't get why it hasn't been nominated in any of the critic awards for Best Picture (besides winning Best First Film or whatever) If Jackie's eligble, and the film won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance, why isn't the film itself getting any noms, as well?

I'm surprised to see Greenberg in any of these lists... I was so disappointed with that film.

In my opinion, Mila Kunis doesn't deserve any of her nominations for Black Swan. Sure she was good in the film, but that's pretty much it- good. Not great nor phenomenal as Barbara Hershey who's being snubbed by pretty much everybody. I hope the Academy recognizes her astounding performance in BS.

^same for tilda swinton too. for as popular as 'i am love' has been, tilda swinton has been overlooked by all major awards so far. quite frankly,if 'i am love' does not attain any kind of recognition i refuse to watch the academy awards this year. if anything, for tilda's performance and/or it's cinematography.

So I guess Natalie is going to win the Oscar now for sure. With her pregnancy and all.

I totally thought that too! But I watched Bening's, Lawrence's and Portman's performance and, imo, she deserves the Oscar. I can't wait to watch Tilda in I Am Love. Since I saw some of you talking about it, I got really excited!

Already so many awards for The Social Network  I thought that, following its tremendous box-office success + critical acclaim, Inception would overshadow the other movies..
I haven't watched many movies nor TV shows this year but I just want Jon Hamm to win loads of awards, his acting is outstanding.

Usually films that are released during the first half of the year are forgotten during the awards season and don't get the nominations or awards recognition they deserve. :(

I wouldn't say Inception is as highly regarded as The Social Network, regardless of release date.
If you check RottenTomatoes.com, which tracks all high ranking movie critics, Inception garnered 87% positive reviews, while The Social Network garnered 97% positive reviews. That's quite an accomplishment. I have to admit I preferred The Social Network myself by quite a margin.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there were two "Top 10 Movies of 2010" in the latest Entertainment Weekly issue, *BOTH* critics put The Social Network as their Number 1 movie and did not even mention Inception in their lists.

It will be 10 Best Picture Nominations like last year though, and I'm thinking it's a sure thing that Inception will be one of those 10.

In 2009, District 9 and Up in the Air seemed to be "forgotten" by the time Avatar rolled around, but remember what happened... The Hurt Locker won and shocked everybody. The Hurt Locker was released in June of 2009, and as somebody who manages a movie theatre where it was playing, it did not create much buzz at the time at all.

Was anyone really shocked that The Hurt Locker won?! I wasn't. The Hurt Locker swept up all the critic awards, just like The Social Network is doing now.
