A Lasting Impression : The Influence of Classic Icons

Baby, It's You
The Inspiration: Louise Brooks as LuLu in the 1929 silent film Pandora's Box
Louise Brooks, also known by her childhood name of Brooksie is a 20th century icon. She was born in the midwestern town of Cherryvale, Kansas, on November 14, 1906. She began dancing at an early age with the Denishawn Dancers (which was how she left Kansas and went to New York) and then with George White's Scandals before joining the Ziegfeld Follies, but became one of the most fascinating and alluring personalities ever to grace the silver screen.
Her hair was her trademark. Her distinct Dutch bob framed a face of astonishing beauty. Fair skinned and freckled, Brooks appeared on film as something almost luminous. Her sleek black hair - the famous bob - defined a face both inviting and enigmatic. Her's was a face that the camera loved.

The Inspiration: Gia Carangi
Gia Marie Carangi (January 29, 1960 - November 18, 1986) is best known as one of the first supermodels born from the decadent disco era of the late 70s, early 80s. She had it all...fame, money, adoration and a face to die for! Sadly, none of it could buy the love and happiness she searched for. During her short life, Gia fought personal demons and battled drug addiction. She died of AIDS at the tender age of 26.

The Silent Beauty
Inspiration: Marlene Dietrich
Bio: Marlene Dietrich (December 27, 1901 – May 6, 1992) was a German-born actress, singer, and entertainer.
Throughout her long career, starting as a cabaret singer, chorus girl and film actress in 1920s Berlin, Hollywood movie star in the 1930s, World War II frontline entertainer during the 1940s, and finally as an international stage show performer from the 1950s to the 1970s, Dietrich constantly re-invented herself and eventually became one of the entertainment icons of the 20th century. The American Film Institute ranked Dietrich No. 9 amongst the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.

Model: Kate Moss

This is one of my favorite M&M sets of all time. I think they manage to capture the drama of Dietrich's onscreen personality and even the perfect noirish lighting von Sternberg shrouded her in. Kate is used to great effect and she just shines through in all the pictures. Very sexy but still so elegant and mysterious.

And God Created Woman
The Inspiration:
Brigitte Bardot in the 50's
Brigitte Bardot may not have invented the breathless blonde genre—Marilyn Monroe was the head of that pack—but there's no denying that "Bebe" put an inimitably French spin on the American original. The seductively messy mass of buttery curls framing an impish, good-natured grin, all set atop abundant curves and legs as long as the Eiffel Tower, added up to a delightfully headspinning bombshell à la française. No wonder Bardot's particular incarnation of femininity continues to inspire; just take a look at Spring's runways, where kittenish blondes abounded and va-va-voom sex appeal was to the fore.

Janis Lives!
The Inspiration: Janis Joplin
The greatest white female rock singer of the 1960s, Janis Joplin was also a great blues singer, making her material her own with her wailing, raspy, supercharged emotional delivery. First rising to stardom as the frontwoman for San Francisco psychedelic band Big Brother & the Holding Company she left the group in the late '60s for a brief and uneven (though commercially successful) career as a solo artist. Although she wasn't always supplied with the best material or most sympathetic musicians, her best recordings, with both Big Brother and on her own, are some of the most exciting performances of her era. She also did much to redefine the role of women in rock with her assertive, sexually forthright persona and raunchy, electrifying on-stage presence.

The Couturettes
Inspiration: The Cockettes
Bio: The Cockettes were a psychedelic drag queen troupe founded by Hibiscus, aka George Harris. Combining LSD-influenced dancing, set design, costumes and their own versions of show tunes (or original tunes in the same vein), they soon became a "must-see" for San Francisco's gay community.

I think this edit is genius. The photography is excellent and they translate the overall look of the Cockettes quite well on the girls. Very dramatic and completely fitting with the couture pieces. I also like how the fonts and graphic design used are reminiscent of the 1960s psychedelic arts and/or in the style of old magazines from that era.

Stardust
Inspiration: David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust era)
Bio: David Bowie (born David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947) is an English singer, songwriter, actor, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and audio engineer. Although he released an album and numerous singles earlier, David Bowie first caught the eye and ear of the public in the autumn of 1969, when his space-age mini-melodrama "Space Oddity" reached the top five of the UK singles chart. After a three-year period of experimentation he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam-rock era as a flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, spearheaded by the hit single "Starman" and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona epitomised a career often marked by musical innovation, reinvention and striking visual presentation. [wiki]

An Angel in New York City
The Inspiration:
The 1987 film
Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) by Wim Wenders
There are angels on the streets of Berlin. The film centers around the story of two angels wandering in a mixture of post-war and modern Berlin. Invisible to humans, they nevertheless give their help and comfort to all the lonely and depressed souls they meet. Finally, after many centuries, one of the angels becomes unhappy with his immortal state and wishes to become human in order to experience the joys of everyday life. He meets a circus acrobat and finds in her the fulfillment of all his mortal desires. He also discovers that he is not alone in making this cross over, and that a purely spiritual experience is not enough to satisfy anyone.

The Million Dollar Dress
The Inspiration:
Audrey Hepurn in the 1961 Academy Award winning film Breakfast at Tiffany's
Breakfast at Tiffany's is a daily ritual for Holly Golightly, a social butterfly who hosts parties, entertains drunken men, and dreams of owning a horse farm in Mexico. When Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves into a neighboring apartment -- courtesy of his rich patroness -- he is instantly enchanted by the ditzy, sweet-natured Holly. But for all Holly's fun, Paul starts to realize that all is not well with her. She's desperate to marry rich, visits a notorious gangster, and hides that she was an illiterate teen bride. As Holly's life starts to deteriorate, Paul sets out to show her what her life will be like without real love.

^Absolutely brilliant MMA! Natalie is the right girl to embody Audrey, so many young actresses are compared to Ms. Hepburn but I think Natalie just has something about her - a certain spirit that just reminds me of Audrey.

La bordélique, thats so genius! I love the Bowie spread. I'd been looking for something that referenced him. His fashions are always so innovative but they were especially memorable during his glam rock Ziggy Stardust years. Ann-Catherine look so much like him in those!

Portrait of a Lady
The Inspiration: Dovima
Dorothy Virginia Margaret Juba, born December 11th 1927 and later known as Dorothy Horan best known as Dovima, was one of the supermodels of the 1950s. Born in New York City, Dovima was discovered by an editor at Vogue on the sidewalk of New York, and had a photo shoot with Irving Penn the following day. She worked closely with Richard Avedon, whose photograph of her in a floor-length black evening gown with circus elephants—"Dovima with the Elephants" —taken at the Cirque d'hiver, Paris, in August 1955, has become an icon. The dress was the first evening dress designed for Christian Dior by his new assistant, Yves Saint Laurent. A supermodel before the term became widely known, Dovima was reputed to be the highest-paid model of her time. She had a cameo role as an empty-headed fashion model with a Jackson Heights whine in Funny Face. She died of liver caner on May 3, 1990. After her death, Richard Avedon said, "She was the last of the great elegant, aristocratic beauties... the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time."
