'A million girls would kill for this chance' - an ex-intern at Vogue US

That was very interesting read. Thanks for posting. I guess it doesn't really matter what career you want to get into, you'll always have to start somewhere and if you truly love it, you'll be willing to put the time in. ^_^

I think it would break me. But at the same time it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. Think of the stories and memories. A dull life is worth than death (trust me I'm living one) :P

haha! kind of reminds me of my new assistant job....not allowed to ask questions - just do

Ahh well i'm grateful they took me even though i had no fashion exp

this is harsch... but i think it's worth it, non?
be strong, girls! be positive! it's life... and don't forget...
The interns were often made to stay late, even if everything was done, because the editors were still working.

I started at 9am, had no breaks and left at 8pm.
oh too hard, poor girl... c'mone you're WORKING!!!

but I have a question... stupid one : are the US Vogue's editors' asst. credited in the fashion stories???

You're welcome everyone. Glad you all enjoyed the article

I may also be one of those million girls who would kill for that chance too

Internships can't expect for it to be easy. Life is hard.

I would deffinatley kill to intern at Vogue.

I know it would be hard....very hard.....but i'm strong, and take criticism and bitchiness well...lol.

I'd kill too. As I'm a guy, I should have a better chance at delivering a deadly blow, no?

Does anyone know if Vogue accepts male interns too???

I'm sure they do, I don't see why not. Teen Vogue has male interns (judging from the blog) and there have been male interns at WWD and a whole slew of other women's fashion magazines.

^I think Nicole Richie's friend (Carlos or sthg) is interning @ Teen Vogue, non?

It sounds like hell, but I could take it. I think just BEING at Vogue would make me be grateful, even for the abuse. I wonder if this is just the culture in the US or in Europe as well?

Also, I can't believe they made her fly out from LONDON for an interview. Wow. It's not like it's a 2 hours flight. Maybe that was even part of the reason she got the job: dedication.

You know...I wonder if Meisel and Wintour are really as bad as people think or if it's just the way people choose to act around them.

Yeah, like one of those comedic things, "like omg she's such a b*tch don't look at her!" or the typical stereotype of my boss is a b*tch, when in reality sometimes they're just telling you what to do because they HAVE to, she has to run a huge company, now I can see if your boss is a b*tch at some low paying crap job, like the ones who get while still in college, they're just b*tches because they did nothing with their life. But Anna has a huge load on her shoulders and hires assistants for that reason, to do a job. Moving clothing is not that hard and if someone can't even do that, then quite and let someone else do it =) :innocent:. They just write this stuff to keep up with the whole fantasy.

But at first, I did feel sorry for that girl if that is the truth about her boss, theirs no way I'm going to look down at the floor and if someone fired me for that, then they have problems and shrinks are for that./

I am shocked & appalled that so many people would allow themselves to be treated that way. It's masochistic. And for what? So you can hang out with a bunch of snobby beautiful people all day whilst still be treated like sh*t?!! It's absurd. You couldn't put me in a room with Anna Wintour if you paid me, let alone for free.

I think what people were trying to say was that, most jobs ARE like that.

Nah, it depends on the industry mostly. However, in fashion, yes, I imagine people tend to be a bit more on the bitchy and pretentious side than in most other areas of work. I for one would be out of there in a second. I love fashion but I would not sacrifice my quality of life to intern at Vogue. There are many other avenues to explore when it comes to doing that kind of work.
I've held several internships in upscale places and yes the tasks tend to be menial, but I've never been treated like crap. It's so unnecessary.

Exactly. These people aren't trying to be around "beautiful people" like the above poster said (and I don't considered a lot of editiors and celebs as beautiful, but that's my opinion) they are doing something that they truely love and if you truely love something, you won't care about the money or the people around you, it's about doing something that you love. Theres actually a pro baseball player who gave up harvard, just so he could play babseball, when you do something you love something good will come out of it .

And this site is about people who TRULEY LOVE FASHION AND LIVE IT, vogue is like winning MVP for an athlete.

Oh and btw, thank you to the original poster, this was a good article. Karma for you =).

Thanks mirra and L0VE for the karma, I really appreciate it and I'm glad everyone enjoyed reading it as much as I did!

I've also posted an article about 'the day in the life of a fashion reporter from The Daily' which I thought was really interesting too, it's one or two below this thread.

because I guess interning @ Vogue (not only 3months... but much more...) could open you some doors... like perhaps if you're desperate, leaving Vogue and try another magazine... Interning @ Vogue on your resume, if you wanna be a photo stylist, is, IMO, a very good point...
don't you think?
