Wikipedia's definition of a supermodel:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermodel

Do you agree with the list of models in this article, and the definition? Are there new supermodels, can Gemma Ward for example be considered a supermodel? Which models do you think can be dubbed supermodels?

i think gemma ward can b said to b a supermodel...i think a supermodel means that they are models who are being used constantly by designers and photographers...n u see them everywhere...on magazines and editorials and stuff... u can't say that about every model though...so they are supermodels. .. like daria werbowy. Of course ..some of u dont think they are supermodels anymore...becuase ... society's not crazy over them as they were in the 90s with naomi, christy, linda, cindy and claudia. Societies and designers are not obsessed over supermodels...but they're obsessed over celebrities.... i think thats the reason why the word supermodel isn't wat it used to b.

disagree

daria and gemma r here now, but in few years no one will care where they r now... supermodels r gone... the only one left is kate moss...
everybody knows who naomi,kate,linda,... are... but, most of the ppl don't care about today's top models

becuase nobody cares now... since we're more obsessed over celebrities...thats my point... supermodels before are not the same as supermodels today....not as many ppl as before ...wanted to look like supermodels....i think majority of the ppl today want to look like celebrities....rather than supermodels...

Which is so interesting, because most celebs seem to be obsessed with contorting their various bodies into the model mold, in order to look decent on the cover of Vogue and in campaigns.

And they still don't have 'it'. It's all very silly, seeing 40(No Names) & up women trying to be something their not.

Honestly, I can kinda see why the celebs are more of a force today, b/c alot of it has to do with todays crop of girls. I'm disappointed both ways.
Back to the Supers.

It makes me a little curious that actresses are on the cover of fashion magazines now. They area FASHION magazines, not acting magazines. Most of them don't even have model-like features. If it had been the other way around and models replaced all the actresses as the stars of movies, wouldn't of a lot of people wondered what was happening? It is just wierd if you ask me. I want to see Vogue with a model on it, not even a supermodel, just a model. And I don't want to go to Italy to see it on Italian Vogue.

I think the old "supermodels" were more appealing to the masses on fashion magazines than the models of today. It probably has to do with the unwholesome, different look that they have..which may turn some people off? I'm not saying this about ALL models, but opposed to celebrities. I would love to see more models on covers, too..but I don't have a taste for many of them today.

moreover, i find that not a lot of ppl like the models of today...b/c of language barriers?... i mean..most models before all spoke english...whereas today...they're not that great at it... perhaps thats y we can't c personality coming out of these models...They all say how gisele has personality and stuff...but only wen she started being comfortable making jokes and showing her personality with the little english that she can use... other models rn't that comfortable expressing themselves with the new language.

I agree with Haute femme, the Supers just had something special and things are missing from today's crop. As for Anphan I don't know if I can totally agree with the language thing although its of note, b/c many of the big models weren't from America. Tatjana,Claudia Schiffer,Carla Bruni,Helena Christensen, etc and even Yasmin,Naomi,Kate do speak English but still have their own meanings of things that are different from Americans. While I agree part of the problem is this generation's crop of models isn't that great, I also think it has something to do with who owns the magazines now. Haven't I heard that big corporations that also finance movies own the publications, too? There has to be some reason, because I find the celebrities (Aniston, Hiltons, Lohans, etc) as banal as the models.
