Advice about Starting & Promoting a Fashion Blog - See Post #1 for Thread Rules

^ If only 4 people are following you, it's no surprise no one reacted to your tweet.. Did you think of looking up the hashtag corresponding to the event and following the people who are interested in it?

As for the lack of comments on your blog, do you comment on other blogs?

i comment on blogs all the time. this site gives me the most. but i do read other blogs and "meaningfully" comment on them. how do i find out about the hashtag?

One more thing emailme. Not sure it's a good idea to add "follow jerrlife.blogspot.com everyone!" at the end of your comments like you just did on my blog. A lot of bloggers, myself included, think it's inappropriate.

really? i see a lot of people do it and i thought thats just part of promoting and people understand. i dont see it any different than the signature you and i have on our posts here. it makes it easier for readers to get to me.

That's how i see it but for sure I wont do it on your blog from now on.

follow jerrli...just kidding.

Hey everybody! I read through this thread and the previous one last night, which were so so helpful.

I just started my blog this month and would really appreciate your feedback:

www.featherfactor.com

yo I've been blogging for 2.5 years now but I'd love some feedback regarding my blog, especially technical issues and all that - any ways I can improve on what I have already would be greatly appreciated!!

http://rippedknees.com

What do you mean by technical issues and all that? If you have a technical issue you should contact Blogger Support. ^_^

Anyway, what are you doing to promote your fashion blog? I noticed you are monetising in various ways ( and you seem pretty confident selling overseas B) ) Do you mean feedback based on the topic of this thread?

...We don't target consumers at all. It's a trade publication written for designers, buyers, and stylists...

Judging from the home page my first impression was that I wasn't looking at a trade publication, nor one that caters stylists, buyers AND designers. Can't find an About Us section to explain what is the site about. But there's a section (Media Kit) that gives some insights about the company. There it says it caters both industry fashion professionals based in New York and...luxury consumers! From a media-buying perspective the latter can be an issue when considering all options for paying for visitors --either approaching directly or via a media agency-- perhaps because they want to deliver their communications to very specific audiences...unless each target has its own user-interface.

...We've been building it for three years and I still have no idea how to quantify it for advertisers (especially since we have a hard and fast editorial responsibility policy that means we can never take advertising from designers)...
I'd say that it will depend case by case as each potential advertiser could have its own business and internet marketing and communication objectives. Have modacycle considered other online sources of income (CPM (even this choice sounds flexible compared to actual ad options), commission based, advertising through e-newsletter, subscription, pay-per-view for exclusive documents...) or offline ways of making money (i.e. some trade publication leverage their industry knowledge through producing conferences, exhibitions, niche publications, consumer insight...?

...on another note, i forced my sister to create a blog because she has a youtube channel and does reviews on makeup. she started around the same time as me but she has not worked on html, design, and even a signature on the makeup forum she visits to make it easy for viewers to find it. i checked her page views and she has half of what i have! i couldn't believe it.

Comparing two completely different blogs (one is FOCUSED, the other BROAD) with the monthly pageviews parameter won't give you a complete picture of what's going on. What if all those pageviews come from people that went to the site and then click away right on the spot because the content wasn't what they were looking for (high bouncing rate)? Or what if she's incorporating without knowing high-traffic Google keywords in her content? Consider that there's high demand for user generated review content specially in the fashion beauty and style sectors (i.e. price comparison sites, aggregators).

...for me i have to work hard to earn every page views on my blog and she didn't try at all. im consumed by my blog and always thinking how can i make it better? its frustrating.

What's your audience thinks about that? What they like and dislike about your blog?

Yeah, we don't target them, but they show up. We may end up serving some percentage of that population to get into the black soon. Honestly, I don't think there is much of a future in web advertising for us as it stands. We're trying to get to a more vertical sponsored content model, not relying on the web site to distribute the high end content, to pay for certain unusual projects, but that's a few months out. Our Dream To Seam series is distributed across hundreds of video sites and available inside closed systems like iTunes and FIOS on demand. That's one of the directions we're pushing.

We've got some things on the drawing table, but I can't say too much yet.

We run the site on WordPress, but I don't think of it as a blog at all. I really run it like a magazine with 365 content release dates. Trying to convey that to advertisers has been difficult to say the least.

I'm impressed by the number of comments you are receiving considering you started like a month ago...and that not all actual visitors care to post a comment! :woot:

Hmmm...You seem like a rising star :mohawk:. How are you promoting your blog? :shifty:

If you really focus into one direction, I'm sure you will have better chances to business succeed ( there's not a lot of fashion business/education oriented videos on the web, or even aggregated in just one place, are they? ). There's an old saying that goes: I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody that applies perfectly when talking marketing. B)

that's so kind of you to say (but don't know about the rising star part!) I think I am pretty active and try to produce original content which I find interesting, which is what a famous fashion blogger advised. Thank you again and let me know if there's anything that you see that I should try and fix!:flower:

Commit yourself for at least a year to produce original, focused, quality and relevant content for your audience ( this is good for word-of-mouth promotion! :P). Also, bring more new visitors doing promotion on your own (consider partnerships and online PR). Lead more comments to your blog for each post and find other ways to grow your return visitors base. B) Don't forget to analyse your traffic and audience, and finally, think strategically and plan for action to monetise your creation . Advertisers or media agencies love popular blogs, specially if they have been around for some time and they're engaging their very specific audiences and are committed to last long

And once you are famous don't forget to come back here and dust yourself with the common people of the forum ( perhaps that's just me ), and sign us some autographs :brows:

So flattering...lol I don't think I will ever be famous but I will definitely be thanking you...:flower: for all the thoughtful advice...I really appreciate it!

Meet Nyc Girls

...And lots, and lots of dudes want to know where to meet NYC girls. (I just learned that if you type "meet nyc girls" in Google, my blog comes up first, which sucks for those who search, cause my blog is not exactly a dating community....

MEET NYC GIRLS?

 And that was back then ([I'm replying to an old post from this same thread (part 1))]...

...BUT your blog is still on the top of 91,000,000 search results in Google for those same words...and without any intended advertising effort! :innocent:

Your blog is also a Google darling having a strong Page Rank and +100 Backlinks. :woot: There are more than 40 competitors biding on those words and struggling creating keyword related content to remove your blog from the first place! ^_^ I wonder how much money they are spending in those same keywords per month?

How can a fashion blogger and all this incoming traffic could benefit from this, not in a monetary, deceptive, exploitative way since I assume (I could be wrong) you are more interested in being recognized as a writer/author, but like taking this opportunity to do some social experimentations (like those Sophie Calle's anthropology-photo-essays). Leveraging an unexpected muscle power to start a self-publish career also comes to my mind. :muscles:

I also have a blog, for like a month now. It's not about fashion, because it's not the thing that I really'd really like to write about. And there is already millions of fashion blogs out there(I like to read them anyway).
My blog is about quotes, which I've been collecting for a long time and I share them now.
Link is in my signature.

I'm working on Wordpress, and I'm trying to understand a SEO Strategist for my little website. Let me share what I understood !

I begin with the bad news, people building websites are always taking really good care to found a good name for the website.

Most of the time, Fashion bloggers always choose the name of the website in an arty way to represent themselves, with a very fancy long name or worst with a brand name...

Rules to choose a name.
- Brainstorm 5 Top Keywords
- Make the Domain Unique
- Make it Easy to Type
- Make it Easy to Remember
- Keep the Name as Short as Possible
- Create and Fulfill Expectations
- Avoid Copyright Infringement
- Set Yourself Apart with a Brand
- Reject Hyphens and Numbers
- Don't Follow the Latest Trends
- Use an Ajax Domain Selection Tool

A good website name, will help you in the page ranking !

On successful SEO strategy...

Keywords
Use in a smart way keywords.

Rich Text
In fashion we have lot of images and videos, by using the right information in Text.... People will be able to found what they re looking for.

Thread Title
Thread titles are very important, and should contain right Keywords.

Simple site architecture
Layout of the website should be very easy to navigate, that would make easier for google robots for example to index your content.

Links developement
Share you're URL the most you can ! Like to write smart comment on a forum or other blogs.

I just share what I understood. If someone can explain better, he or she is more than welcome !

Hey, kikiss! Thanks for sharing this! :flower:

I'd like to add some other considerations about SEO strategy.

Keywords
Or better yet keyphrase analysis (keyword phrase). Google gives more relevance when there is a phrase match between the keywords users types and a phrase on a page. Use Google Adword's Keyword Tool as a free tool analysing what actual Google users type in the search box. But better yet open a Google Adword free account (you don't need to have a site or buy anything) as it will give you more results to analyse. Use this tool as a starting point before going further with Yahoo and Bing.

Rich Text
Yes, fashion sites tend to be very visual and forget creating search engine friendly text (copy). This is specially important for new/unknown brands.

Search engine submission
Before becoming a SEO pro submit your site to the search engines! (Google, Yahoo and Bing). Pretty obvious, right? But some people forget! Anyway, this is something you can do on your own and doesn't cost anything (just the time it takes learning where to submit and submiting the link itself). If you have a blog based on a popular platform (i.e. Blogger, Wordpress) you don't have to care about submitting.:innocent:

Indexing
That is ensuring all your relevant pages from your site can be read by the search engines. Even this is basic SEO routine some companies (even big companies!) fail to index relevant pages! If someone is interested to know if his/her site has been index by the search engines just ask here and I'll answer right in this thread.

Links developement
Or External linking. The aim of this SEO activity is to get linked by quality sites (as for Google, high PageRank sites:( the more links a page has from good quality sites, the better their ranking. I'd suggest to formulate a link development strategy as this is one of the most important search engine marketing activities you need to take into account.

NOTE: Leaving comments on blogs it's a good promotional activity to do (as it can get you some traffic from original blog) BUT DOESN'T IMPACT your PageRank...unless blog creator quotes your comment and/or includes your link into his/her original post!

On-page optimisation
The aim of this activity is to match between search terms entered and the occurrence of the words on the page that influence search engine rankings. kikiss already gave us some nice tips. ^_^ But there are more things to consider thou.

Internal link structures
Include your keyphrases within the anchor text of a hyperlink to point to relevant content. Consider how to increase the number of internal links to pages which you want to rank well. Yes, you need to know some basic HTML to get the best of this.

Finally, let's not forget that SEO is one of the two parts that makes the Search Engine Marketing . The other one being Paid search marketing.

:P

Anyone here cares to share his/her experience using paid search marketing (i.e. pay-per-click, Google Adwords, etc.)? Cheers in advance! :flower:

It's funny how the passion for Fashion Blog went that quiet...

I'm like F0F0 looking forward to read somebody with his/her experience using paid search marketing !

I got a small thing to say...
I can see more and more, men's fashion blogs with Cars ad, Liquors ad, and bad taste things. I'm wondering how the admins cannot feel guilty to put stuff like that on their websites.

Ok they won money, ok ad companies and brands will RT on Twitter, and sometimes free clothes but come on !

That's it.... sorry about that litte angry moment...
