Advice about Starting & Promoting a Fashion Blog - See Post #1 for Thread Rules

one of my advice for bloggers is that you have to make it look like the site you'd visit yourself.

That means write about what your interests are and make the website look uniform and appealing.

That's such great advice ^ cause I am so picky about the blogs I continually visit - so I should hold mine to the same standards. Although mine's still a constant work in progress. lol

I've had my blog almost 3 years..its been just an organic process creating it but I would love some feedback on how it has progressed since then...

Thanks!

thanks for the feedback guys...
in case anyone is wondering- the answer to the question seems to be no...
migrating from anything ( wordpress, blogger, etc) to tumblr is not easy and sometimes not possible...
there is no way to import comments even if you can manage the rest of the
migration...

so that explains to me why longtime bloggers like the sartorialist have stayed on blogger...
he could never move---
it would mean losing all his readers posts---
and his google ranking...
it would be like starting over completely...

not such an issue for the likes of a small blog...
but if you actually like and care about what you have posted...
you probably don't want to lose it...

hope that helps someone...

I have started my blog a while ago as a personal diary of my life in Paris for my friends, when stopped it for a while, and now I moved to London, I want to start documenting my life here and right now I wanna work on my blog seriously. I would really appreciate if you could have a look and comment, if I have chosen a good direction or if it sucks. Well it's still developing :)
What I also wanted to ask, is how do you do about mentioning names? I study fashion, started an internship for a fashion magazine, worked on a shoot already and gonna be doing much more stuff in the future - i think as everybody wants to work in fashion today, there would be people interested in reading about me trying to make it in a big fashion city and of course saying: "I worked with this big photographer John and big model Kim today and we gossiped that the editor Marine is a b*tch" (just a harsh example of course :)) would be way more interesting than keeping it kinda anonymous and saying "an X photographer told me that an Y person is not that nice as she is pretending to be". But then I am thinking, that maybe it's not nice to use somebody's else name on my blog (even if i only write nice things, which I'm planning to do) without having their permission? I know that asking for a permission is allways a good idea, but if I would work with Mario Testino and he would tell a joke and then I would blog about him telling that joke it would be absurd to go to him in the end of our work together and ask him: "do you mind if everything you told us today I would use for my blog (to show off I worked with you and to have more readers)"?

what are your thoughts? i'm lost here

Oh, and another question for discussion: what do you think is the future of blogging? tumblring and twiterring? there are SO many blogs nowadays, but only very few of them are on the top and getting paid. And as all trends have their cycles, I feel like blogging has to evolve, something has to change - but where? What do you think?

i'm reading the whole thread now, so i am coming up with a bunch of questions - when you are commenting on somebody's blog post shall I comment only as a logged-in blogger user or should I write my blog address under my comment as well? I find doing the second thing too obvious and tacky - but maybe that's the way to go? what is better for the search engines?

If you name names, only write positive things. If you have negative things to say and name the people, it could hurt you, especially if you work in fashion. I have the impression that readers enjoy blind items anyway.

About commenting on other blogs, every blogger is different. Some don't mind commentors writing their blog adress at the end of their comment. I personally don't allow that on my blog because the commentors' blogs are already linked to in their names and I feel like they comment on my blog only for publicity and not for the sake of discussion.

How many views make you a "top blogger"? Or where is the line between blogger and blogger that gets promotions and offers?

anybody up for a link exchange?
also, I read at the first thread, how important for traffic stumble is. But it was a couple of years ago - is it still? are there any new websites like this i should know about?

I integrated StumbleUpon, Reddit, Google+, Twitter, and Facebook buttons into almost every page of our site, but Facebook seems to be the one that really gets used, followed by Twitter occasionally.

Be careful about social sites though, because you might get 1200 people showing up who only stay for 5 seconds, and that will really mess with your bounce rate. Quality traffic is more important than mass traffic. At least, that's what we're betting on right now. Our site is a trade publication though, so if you're running, for example, a consumer-targeted shoe blog, it might be a different story.

And uh, what if one actually starts getting legit inquiries from brands about advertising? Has anyone ever peeked at a top blog's media kit before? :ninja:

It's always the same problem. Which advertising model should we follow ?!

Fashion bloggers don't have Union, so it will be difficult to answer this question.

Check F0F0's posts on advertising, they are very interesting.

Ton's of them in this and the first thread about this topic.

Problem is you need to read this whole thread and the first thread (link to that one is the first post of this thread). The tips are all mixed in ... sort of random.

wow this a great thread, does any body know how to promote a blog really well?

It's interesting that most of the "top fashion bloggers" people think about were propelled forward by established players and traditional media. In studying where they came from, I have yet to see a real formula except "post often and get help from celebrities."
