Alexander McQueen Resort 2023 London

Gorgeous suiting, as always.

Unfortunate that things completely fall apart when she strays away from the sartorial suitings and trenchcoats, and attempts dresses and gowns. The desperate, overwrought messiness stumbles, tumbles and topples any semblance of the reserved grace and studied tailoring of her suitings, and into literal clownwear. It’s hilarious to think that the same customer that will appreciate the skilled, sharp and sophisticated scalper-cut of her suitings would willingly punk’d themselves to wear these clown dresses. And it doesn’t help that her pedestrian cast looks bigger, dumpier and frumpier in them. What an odd way to sell the brand.

For years now so many of the collections have been so soulless and limp but so bloody heavy on the body. Even some of the nicer suiting options just look as stiff as cardboard with the finish of linoleum.

It is only resort but it's just sad. Sad that it has turned into this because of what I can only presume is the huge control the suits have. Did they make them stock order the same fabrics in absolute bulk? They've been using the same textiles and print ideas for what feels like an eternity...

Look 42 must be Sarah's lowest point in terms of dressmaking. Does she think this silhouette is going to be flattering on anybody? Why is she tailoring always solid but her dressmaking keeps getting worse? How is that possible?

We will continue to see these silhouettes for many more seasons to come because these are the brand's best sellers. It's just so corporate and sad for a brand like McQueen.

And please can you at least style them with different shoes for a season? Why is it always combat boots? Do McQueen women no longer wear high heels?

I'm going to go completely against the grain here and say I actually rather like it. Yes, it's not reinventing the McQueen wheel but it's got some of the least obnoxious iterations of the cutout trend I've seen so far, and this was never going to be a normcore label so the hard/soft dramatic feel is in line with what they're known for. Look 44 doesn't work but the same shape in black, in look 1, does for me.

Also all of the shoes I can see the models wearing - including the boots - are high heeled? Those aren't combat boots, unless we think that category includes polished black leather boots with no apparent laces.

In any case looks 24 and 44 have already made their red carpet debut and looked good on Sadie Sink back at the Venice Film Festival, in September, so they're clearly not only meant to work on modelesque tall women (Sink is 5'3")

Sorry, I can't find the edit button - I meant Look 42 up there (the pink asymmetric skirt with the ruffle) NOT 44 (which I actually like, and think looks much better on the actress than the model - basic styling choices re: hair and makeup, make a real difference to how these looks come across).
